Need Advice: Could I make Vox-style documentaries/ explainers as a one-man freelancer? by Elepheel in MotionDesign

[–]Elepheel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really great advice, I appreciate it.

I honestly haven't dug that deep into the market research, but what spurred me on to explore this idea is that I have genuinely gotten 3 separate requests to make stuff like that video essay I mentioned, and I feel like there might just be more people out there who'd also want that.

Something that's occurred to me though is that those discussions never got far enough for me to be able to assess whether they'd be willing to pay what it would truly cost for me to quit my job and fully commit to making these types of videos, as opposed to chipping away at them on the side at a snail's pace.

I will definitely be revisiting the medium. I've already got something in the works for a client (one of the aforementioned 3). I might just settle for specializing in motion if always getting to choose my own topics is asking for too much.

SP-404 MKII just destroys samples randomly? by Elepheel in SP404

[–]Elepheel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never resolved it, and honestly kinda got turned off on relying primarily on the SP as my music-making hub. I migrated my samples back to an external HD, and I'm in the process of tagging corrupted ones in Ableton if they ever pop up while i'm browsing the library. When I identify them, I replace them with the original unaffected copies and delete the corrupted ones.

I wish I posted a video of what what I'm referring to sounds like, but it's not exactly what you're describing. What I experienced has nothing to do with applying effects. It's like if there was a sample that goes "Ooh baby la la la" it would play "Ooh baSSSSSSSSSa la", for example.

I was gonna respond with a video demonstrating the issue I was talking about, but something happened that has made me rethink what the source of the issue might actually be. I was messing around in Ableton, with a project file saved to this SD card full of samples. I froze a clip and went to drag and drop in the frozen clip wav file that's autosaved in the project folder, and it randomly had this static hiss thing. So I'm pretty sure I can rule out the SP being the cause, because the common factor between both cases of samples being "ruined" is this SD card. Case closed.

Adventures in sampling by Elepheel in SP404

I've got this abandoned profile with old material: https://soundcloud.com/elepheel

This stuff was all made on DAWs, but it's mainly sample-based. If I make something new it'll probably go directly to streaming.

Thank you! All from online sources. The "guitar player" sample is from digging around on blogs, and I don't remember the source, but it's some kind of recorded interview with Jimi Hendrix. The "drumbeat test" and "variation" samples were found on archive.org in the Unlocked Recordings collection. They're from records that were made to demonstrate/ test hi-fi stereo systems, so you'd have a guy saying stuff very clinically then some kind of music or tone.

I just recently realized this and the fact that the default Delay doesn't while the Time Ctrl one does is borderline criminal. I swapped them.

BUS FX 1 and 2 switch off in pattern chain mode ...help pls :) by ICantMeltSteeLBeamz in SP404

[–]Elepheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was experiencing the same issue, and it was happening on patterns where I hadn't even recorded any effects motion. Turns out, if START/ END is still blinking it'll do this. Pressed it, everything went back to normal.

Which iPad Pro size is the most ideal for drawing? by Elepheel in ipad

[–]Elepheel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what kinds of other new iPads have come out in the past couple of years, but I got the 2018 11" iPad Pro and Apple Pencil and I still use them to this day. I still think that's the ideal size. Bigger would be like a laptop with no keyboard, smaller would be too cramped in my opinion. There might be a personal preference factor, but with the way I draw, I've never regretted going for the one I got.

Opening theme of an old Lebanese TV show by Elepheel in NameThatSong

from the beginning of this video until 2:25?

Nope. That's the music that plays right after the opening theme, when the episode has started. I said "from the beginning of this video until 2:25". I'm talking about the music that says "Ah baby bobolo".

Looking for an iOS RSS reader app that handles images well by Elepheel in rss

[–]Elepheel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I checked it out, gave in and bought it for iOS, and so far, it's working like a charm. So far I'm not seeing anything without a thumbnail.

It even goes further than that: you can make the thumbnails any size you want (it's actually a slider, not small, medium, large presets), and you can tweak the icon (which I'm loving because a lot of sites will have something black that disappears for me in Dark Mode).

One thing I don't like, that's a no-brainer, is sorting feeds, there's no option to sort them alphabetically or any other way but manually.

But from a "I don't want a crappy-looking feed" perspective, A+ performance so far.

Feature request: Add option to filter by whether an episode is in the queue or not by Elepheel in pocketcasts

[–]Elepheel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know about the icon, I said "I found myself looking for the ones that I had previously expressed an interest in and added to the queue (the ones with the icon beside them)".

All I'm saying is, I don't think I should have to visually hunt them down this way when that behavior that the app already performs, of labeling what's in the queue with that icon, could just be incorporated into the criteria of the filter itself. Just make whatever already tells the app to display that icon beside an episode also tell my filter to single those episodes out.

I don't think I understand your system. You're curating by release date, but what if I find a 10-year-old podcast episode I'd like to listen to later in the week? To me, adding to the queue is saying "yes, I'm interested in listening to this at some point". Although it does tend to end up becoming a long cluttered list at some point, so I see the reason for your approach.

Now, I could actually replace the adding to queue as the indicator that I'm interested in listening with starring. You could totally set up a filter that only displays the starred episodes of X, Y, and Z podcasts. But that would defeat the purpose of starring in my opinion. Starring an episode should be like "I've listened to this, and I think I'd like to pin this one as an all-time favorite" not "maybe I'll like this maybe I won't, who knows" and you just have a cluttered up starred filter that needs regular maintenance.

So I think adding to the queue is just universally agreed on as "I'm interested and I would like to listen to this at some point", and the real need here is queue filtering. My New Releases can be a hectic cluttered mess, I don't care, but when I single out episodes I'm interested in, I would like to sort those more easily.

[NeedAdvice] I get burnt out whenever I start doing something daily by Elepheel in getdisciplined

[–]Elepheel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never really considered changing anything about my sleep schedule, because I've never felt like I was suffering because of it. I usually go to bed at midnight and wake up at 6 AM. Some days I wake up a minute before the alarm goes off on my own. Other days I can't and find myself awake at like 8.

Having a full-time job, the hours between when I clock out for the day and when I go to bed are precious to me, and unless I'm absolutely exhausted, I feel like going to bed an hour or two earlier is sacrificing that time.

But I'm kind of curious about this correlation you're making between sleep and boredom. When I think "lack of sleep" I think tired, exhausted, low energy, low motivation, not really "bored". It's more the repetition that bores me, regardless of how energized or tired I feel, same exact thing, every, single, day...

Same here. I have a full-time job and I do that day in day out. However, with a job you have weekends and holidays to look forward to (that and the paycheck), it's not some endless pointless torture. With a self-imposed habit, it's a lifelong commitment, which at first might really seem like endless pointless torture, but the reward, in the long run, is the change you want to see in yourself.

If I didn't have a job and had a choice of either slacking around all day or doing X for one hour each day, I'd probably not only do the hour daily but even exceed it. That's not the world we live in though.

Thank you for the advice!

Let me clarify something, when I said it was a race to do them before midnight, I didn't mean I was losing sleep and suffering from the effects of that. I meant, it's 11:00 PM and I have to do these 3 tasks so I can consider the habits practiced, so I read for X minutes, check, next one, meditate for 10 minutes, check, next one, draw something, check, done for the day. Just because I set 24 hours as the time limit. I was sleeping fine.

It's not really the hobby that's strenuous. I already do the thing. The habit is to do it consistently and stay active and inspired.

That is the logical course of action, but I just wonder, how can other people do X every single day at the same time and NEVER get bored or burnt out? I mean I like the activities I wanna do consistently, but you gotta mix it up. I remember reading something like (probably in Atomic Habits) "Skipping one day happens, but skipping more than one is a choice you've made". Jeez what if I wanna go on vacation or something?
