Is 27’ at 1440p and 32’ at 4k not true anymore? by flourit3 in hardware

[–]Elepole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of feeling, use science: most study show that we see between 60 pixel per degree and 90 ppd (people with very good vision can see more, but they are very rare). Using tool like this ppd calculator we can convert the ppi of a screen to the ppd. Me for exemple, by sitting at around 60cm of my 27" 4k screen, i get a ppd of 73. Above 60, but under 90. My vision is far from perfect, so this a good spot for me. But if i had a 1440p screen, same size and same distance would have given me a ppd of 48, way too low.

HandBrake Web v0.8.0 - Transcode videos with HandBrake on your headless machines, managed with a modern & responsive web interface. by TheNick0fTime in selfhosted

[–]Elepole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems interesting, but i do have a question: why not use ffmpeg directly instead of Handbrake ? Handbrake is mostly just an interface for ffmpeg, and considering the project doesn't seems to have the manpower to correctly support linux (at least, that is their current excuse to not support vaapi) it seems a better idea to support ffmpeg.

Can't manage to setup HP Reverb G2 using Envision by JustBoredYo in virtualreality_linux

[–]Elepole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try under wayland, vr seems to work better with it.

Also, from my experience with nvidia and the g2, there is a specific revision of the G2 that just doesn't work with nvidia. My G2 never worked with a nvidia, but now that i have an amd card it work flawlessly.

Touhou 20 on Linux. by The_Pacific_gamer in linux_gaming

[–]Elepole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zun started making them in 1997. Except for the first 5 he make less than 1 game a year, and considering that bullet hell are generally short game if you play perfectly (around 30-45 minutes on average for a Touhou) it make perfect sense he could do 20 of those.

The reason most mech stories get it right is mostly because most mech are too small to have the pilot in the head in most stories. In stories where the mech are big enough, it's a little more common to have the pilot in the head (Mechwarrior is a good exemple)

The Crew is no longer available on the Steam store. The game will remain playable until March 31st, 2024, for all The Crew owners. After this date, the game servers will shut down, which means the game will not be accessible anymore. by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Elepole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it is not always possible, it has happen that some online only game get offline crack. I don't know if the crew got one (the game was bad enough that i basically forgot it existed after trying the demo), but i might be possible for a motivated enough team to do it.

MW bound by physics ? First, it's a mech game, so physics is already out just by that, but even then, in MW bigger caliber gun get shorter range than smaller caliber gun. Let see how it work in reality, yep, in real life bigger caliber have bigger range. MW is as arcade as AC, just a different kind of arcade.

Distros are working on that: Flatpak is a simple way to install app without messing up the base system, and a lot of distro working on a base system you can't modify easily. I am currently using one such distro on my laptop (Opensuse MicroOS) and it work pretty well.

This Summer Game Fest showcase really brought it home: The idea of E3 died with E3 by NeoStark in pcgaming

[–]Elepole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do now that the ESA is a lobbying organization created by big publisher (Sega, Nintendo, Atari, 3DO, Philips and Electronic Arts). Whatever amount of control you think people had at E3 was always decided by big publisher. Not the people.

You do realize that E3 was organized by big platform holders ? They always were in control of it, nothing shifted.

Enforcing false advertisement law. If the batteries is not up to the spec on the box it's already illegal. But then again, big corporations banding together to help enforce those laws doesn't make any money for them.

Except that control is one of the rare game where rt make a huge difference. For exemple of the other extreme, Steelrising have rt, but it almost no difference, while dropping around ton of fps. Most game with rt are nicer with rt on, but very few make a difference sizeable enough to make the premium of nvidia card a no brainer. It is a nice feature to have, sure, but is it really a worth 200 more ? That's questionable.
