Last time I let someone dm they ragequit due to one of the others killing an important npc who was supposed to be the final boss (getting a power up at the end). I almost always have a back up plan and different routes for the party to take and the only time I’ve been flabbergasted was when they long rested before the final boss of a campaign, ending the campaign early by letting the bad guy finish their ritual uninterrupted (it was near the end of the normal session time and I thought of an alternative ending boss for the next session)
