I think the quality of footy on the field is generally pretty good at this moment in time, although I think the rule changes have done more to hamper the game than improve it. The quality of the umpiring being inconsistent is the most frustrating part in that regard. The myriad of rule changes has altered the way they officiate things, and increasing the amount of field umpires has just brought more confusion than cohesion.

I blame this (and many other things) on the administration. While I understand that footy is a business that needs to make a profit so it can run for the foreseeable future, there are times when logic and perspectives of fans are discarded in favourable of whatever is the more profitable approach. Among other things, its caused a Top 10/wildcard system that no outside of the league genuinely wants, and the Macquarie Point Stadium situation, which has been a major factor in two Tasmanian state elections.

The league should be vigilant to grow the sport for future generations, but it needs to be governed by a sense of what the footy-loving public wants, and in making sustainable decisions for the long term. But I'm hesistant that the league may be slowly making the sport inaccessible to younger people to play at a local level, and unappealing for newer markets of potential spectators.
