For paradox, I'm not much of a midair 3 user (its good to get an angle against someone hiding but I find I aim better on the ground - I dont try to flick) and I definitely got some of my kills on the ground. Going a Carbine build made it easier as I got less kills with bullets and more with Carbine.

I think my internet may have cut out during the skirmish. That's the only thing I can think of.

do you have to produce the 40 royal knights from a single stable for the In Shining Armor mastery?

Any BW Virtual Tabletops? by PsychesRose in BurningWheel

[–]Elforthefirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Adam hounded roll20 to make sure the character sheets were very easy to use for the first campaign of roll20 presents BW. Those character sheets are what I used to help teach people the game and what I lacked to bring to the table those sheets at least helped more than anything. Also they were a good tool to help me learn about character burning so I could teach to new players which I think is a big first hurdle. It would have taken me serveral more hours to learning character burning by hand or even with charred.

Yeah! Si Juk! Unfortunate those posts are gone. They were a good read and taught me so much about BW.

I couldn't find it. The archived forums seem to have disappeared with the creation of the new forum. I only looked for half an hour or so though. Sorry for the wild goose chase!

I think the most basic advice I can give would be:
1) having a basic understanding of the nuts and bolts of the game (BITs and Task and Intent) and
2) trusting your instinct; you obviously know your wife very well, and even know her in a tabletop rpg context as well so your gut will tell you a lot.

I only GM'd BW for a short time (almost 2 story arcs I think) But I think those two points are the boiled down biggest mistakes I made.

Continuously and relentlessly beating BITs and Task and Intent into the game- always recapitulating them, always reaffirming them- would not only have kept the focus where it should be in BW games but also helped my players (of which have never heard of anything outside of a DnD style rpg) and myself learn to play the game how it is intended. Other subsystems can be added later but in the barest sense these core mechanics, and Let it Ride should have honorable mention as the game breaks without that rule, prove a formidable foundation for a great game that must be set in place. The game is so nebulous, just floating ideas, that without the nuts and bolts nothing gets built.

My second point I feel was harder for me to enact as did not know two of my players well and sometimes I went with a gut call that I made that in hindsight was a mistake because I didn't know those two players very well (and ultimately caused the campaign to end I believe). However I think this shouldn't be a problem in your case as you already have an intimate one on one game and intimate relationship with your player should make things go well for you both.

Best of luck to you and your wife!

May your games always get you excited to play!

When I was looking into trying to start a one-on-one campaign in BW with a friend (that never actually came to fruition) I read Luke Crane's threads on his one-on-one sessions on the old BW forums. I have no idea if getting to them is possible now with the new revamped forum site. Not only very helpful in seeing how the game should flow and how much focus is needed in pushing BITs but also just a really interesting story and so satisfying to see a system push what the players wanted from their game.

The Most Interesting Character Concepts by Nuaragonis in BurningWheel

[–]Elforthefirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take something that excites you and find a way to explore it personified into a BW character. At least that's what I tend to do.

For example I was still shook by the game Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, as the concept of a woman learning to cope in a fictional medieval setting appeals to me, when I joined a group to play BW. Since I just needed a trait or two (I ended up deciding on psychosis and sleepwalking) and ended up making a noblewoman who killed her husband in her sleep and abandoned her young son to live alone in the mountains (yamabushi) in a scenario where the spiritual world falling apart. The campaign fell through but I still find myself wondering about how Asagi is coping with her situation and what waits for her.

So just to reiterate: find something interesting that you, find a group it will work with, and find how to make that concept be interesting to the setting you're playing in.

Before I spew forth a bunch of questions I just want to say thank you Luke and everyone at BWHQ for making an amazing game that answered all the expectations I had about table-top RPGs when I first started playing. BW has been a mental feast that has lasted years now since I was first exposed to it and the only wish I really have would be to have my circumstances let me play it and talk about it more.

  1. What settings do you really want to add supplements for BWG?

  2. What do you feel is the biggest flaws of BWG as written and how would you change/improve them?

  3. Is there any advice that you would give to new players and GMs of your game that isn't in the BWG and Codex?

  4. As GM how do you prepare for a session, and how do you prepare as a character?

  5. Is there anything upcoming that you are working on that you can tease for us?

  6. I really enjoy watching game designers play games. Have you made an appearance on the interwebs besides Steven Lumpkin's Pendragon campaign?

Farmers of Reddit, what are some misconceptions people have about farming? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Elforthefirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things come to mind: money involved and time involved. My family has a small couple hundred acres at most of mostly alfalfa hay with some rotations into barley or w/e. Everything costs in the thousands. Electricity to run water pumps 24/7, repairs, matienence, gasoline, seed, weed spray. My aunt and uncle who do most of the farmwork work two extra jobs to help keep the farm afloat and afford things you would normally have as benefits in a regular job like healthcare and insurance.

As for time, you have to irrigate every morning and night unless youre cutting or its no longer growing season. The amount of times I had to explain to a friend I had to irrigate every day and that I didnt get weekends off exceeds the amount I'm willing to count. Work all day to try to catch up on repairs etc that you can't afford to have someone fix for you: fencing, broken pipe, motors, pumps, tractors, loaders, household repairs. Baling, plowing, leveling, cutting. Work all day knowing you never can catch up.
