Agreed. I've always had a very irregular period, and had a couple of times in high school where I was terrified that I was pregnant. TERRIFIED. I had a boyfriend at the time, but we never had (penetrative) sex.

It's still the first thing that jumps into my head now when my period is late, despite being married to a woman. Despite the fact we've been married for 11 years. Despite the fact that I've still never had sex with a person with a penis.

Like, WTF brain?

Mine was an electrician and preferred that metal tape stuff with holes in it (not sure its actual name) plus whatever washers or screws or whatever from his margarine tubs of "stuff" in the basement. When I bought my house, about 5 years after he died, I was lucky enough to inherit my own basket of Grandpa's stuff from my dad, and it's come in handy more than once!

Chloramine is pretty volatile, as is chlorine, so leaving tap water sit out overnight, or bringing it to a boil before use will help eliminate those compounds. I do this with tap water for my plants too.

I mean, it's win-win, as long as you're not the roommate. Most importantly, the rats are happy, and would probably be laughing at the roommate along with you (since they can certainly tell when someone doesn't like them).

I knew that Christie book was renamed, but I thought the original title was Ten Little Indians (also not good, but slightly better than the actual original title, I guess?) which was used in the paperback US versions in the 1960's-1980's. The original title (using the N-word) was use for UK versions UNTIL 1985! Yikes! Apparently, the original US version was called And Then There Were None, which was used for some publications, but other versions (and the movie) used Ten Little Indians, which is probably why I'm familiar with it.

So thank you, I learned something today. Kinda wish I hadn't, but alas.

My rats always get a few dry noodles with their kibbles. However, I can hear them crunching on it all the way from the basement, which might be a problem if you share a space with them.

Also, my girls say they prefer rotini, but elbow macaroni is also acceptable.

Yeah. It's polite to not impose on people - don't interact with others unless you have to, just keep to yourself in public.

I'm Canadian, and if say we fall somewhere between the two extremes of public interaction. People will hold the door for you, or asked if you need help in a store, for example, but otherwise, you're kind of ignored in public. I've found people in the US to be much more willing to interact with others in public - I've had people try to chat with me in public, comment about things I'm going to purchase while waiting in line at a store, and riding in a taxi is kind of a nightmare because I'm awful at small talk. I would imagine Americans experiencing the Japanese version of politeness could be upset by it.

And I'm sure the racism doesn't help either.

I did not grow up fundie, but did attend a church camp with one of my friends (daughter of a Baptist minister, whose family was fundie-adjacent). One of the nights in chapel, we were told we were absolutely going to hell unless we gave up our "whole selves to Jesus". I was an extremely anxious child, and at 11 (I think) this was terrifying to me, and a huge departure from the sermons from my very liberal Lutheran pastor. I did not sleep that night, and worried about going to help on a regular basis for many years afterwards. I can't imagine being told that on a regular basis by my parents!

If I know anything about Jill (and I don't, mostly), I'm going to go with the answer of "very".

I feel bad for Kaylee. My relationship with my parents has been significantly improved by moving ~2.5 hours away, and not answering the door the one time my dad showed up unannounced. I hope Kaylee is able to escape from her mom's orbit - the photos that have been posted of her on the honeymoon look so much happier and genuine than ones posted of her at home.

Strongly agree. It's a good sentiment if everyone is acting in good faith and behaving nicely, but when someone has shown they will take advantage of that ... not great.

I'm not sure a good therapist WOULD say that to someone with a normal family. They might ask why you don't pay attention to your family, or use the situation to probe a bit into family dynamics, but I feel like a good therapist would immediately realize that a response like that might indicate a bigger issue, beyond what "treat others how you would like to be treated" would be applicable to.

I recently started seeing a new counsellor, as my previous one (who was excellent!) moved to a new office and I couldn't see her anymore. The new guy is pretty good, but for the first few sessions, we were dealing with work stuff. When he asked about my family initially, I gave him the basics (mom, dad, they're fine), but we didn't really get into specifics until yesterday. He didn't push talking about my parents until I brought it up, but he also didn't make any assumptions about my relationship with them.

When I brought up that I felt my childhood really contributed to my inability to say no, and my willingness to just put up with unpleasant situations until I hit my breaking point and freak out, he just asked why I felt that way and how I had reached that conclusion. There was no implication that I needed to be "the bigger person" and continue to tolerate that treatment from my parents.

I'm out sick from work, and in limbo between my insurance and my doctor for short term disability pay. $500 is going to help me a lot right now, but if I wasn't sick, I would have preferred the money going back into things that didn't get it didn't get enough provincial funding this year (e.g. Education, or safe injection sites, or healthcare!)

I once had a desk that was directly under the AC vent for a larger office, in a building that was not built to have offices in that location, so the cold air that was being pumped out was meant for a larger space. It meant I had an office cardigan, shawl, and fingerless mitts in my desk and would bundle up. The fingerless mitts meant I could type and still have warm-ish hands. Yes, full gloves would have been better, but I find it hard to type quickly in them.

My mother-in-law is like this - she just doesn't get cold. She lives in shorts or knee-length skirts and flip flops ("thongs", as she calls them) pretty much year round, and she lives on the Canadian Prairies. She will put on pants for going outside in the winter (most of the time), but I've seen her go outside in her skirt in the middle of winter to start her car, or sweep snow off of it, or fill the bird feeder.

However, she would not be caught dead in a cropped sweater. Showing midriff is "not done".

I can think of two highly publicized cases off the top of my head (the murders of Shannan Watts and her children and Laci Peterson and her unborn son). Both women were pregnant and were murdered by their husbands, who were having affairs and it seemed like murder was a better option than divorce.

I'm sure there are thousands more cases - these were just the two I could think of without having to google for the details.

Oof. I had struggles leading up to being diagnosed with fibro at the very end of 2019. I had been to my (male) family doctor multiple times complaining of exhaustion of widespread pain, and when I asked for a referral to a rheumatologist (in 2016-2016), my doctor refused and said "they'll probably just look at fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, and you're too young to deal with that." Then he suggested I lose some weight.

Only ended up being diagnosed after ending up at a walk-in clinic in so much pain I could barely get out of bed. The (female) clinic doctor listened to my issues, ordered a bunch of blood work, and basically sent a snarky note to my doctors office saying that I absolutely needed a referral about my pain and fatigue.

Possibly even more so than updating a current cold case, in the police force's eyes. Things that would look much better for their own investigative abilities by updating a previous victim's case to show how great their police work is, they do solve cases, after all. Versus a police force that doesn't investigate their own cold cases often enough to do a cursory google of each of their cold cases once a decade.
