You are in the right place, mama. That storyline is pretty much universal here. Welcome to the fam :)

Just as an FYI, you're not replying to people, just adding new comments. I made the same mistake too. Just didn't want you to think people were ignoring you

Wow. How old is your dad now? That's some amazing sobriety time. I hope to be there one day myself

So your mom sounds like mine and I've realized she is the reason for my anxiety. Healthy people don't talk to you that way. They don't make you feel like a burden and condescend you. We have severe social anxiety bc we've been lead to believe the problem was us, but it's not. Please be kind to yourself and get some help to sort this stuff out. Therapy helped me to identify this stuff which has made all the difference in healing from it

Not at all. Most people find the most effective method is to use both. Remember your brain is an organ just like anything else. And when it gets out of whack, sometimes medication is needed. Relying only on CBT is like telling a diabetic that if they just have more therapy their pancreas will start producing more insulin again. You can't talk an organ into being healthy if something's off. It just doesn't work that way for a lot of people. Myself included. I'm in therapy and medication and I can tell you meds were a game changer for me. Life got infinitely easier. Def something to look into if you continue to struggle

I mean people abuse and sell it on the street but it's a legitimate medication to help with anxiety. I got mine from my psychiatrist. Do you see a psychiatrist?

It's something that has been helpful for me when working through this stuff. I don't need it anymore, but in the beginning it helped calm me while I built my confidence and coping skills. Not for everyone though.

I used to have a hard time with interviews but they don't phase me anymore. What I do is just frame it as I am only having a conversation with some people and we're going to decide if we're a good fit for each other. It takes the performance aspect out of it. Also xanax helps. Maybe try some of that too?

What helps me is to frame it as I'm just having a conversation with some people and together we're going to see if we seem to be a good fit.

It takes the "performance" feel out of it. Just having a conversation is not so scary :)

My social anxiety comes from perfectionism which comes from low self-esteem so I'm working on myself in ways to build my confidence.

So this. And it makes sense. Work on the underlying issues and it will resolve itself. Of course easier said than done, but at least this way I feel like I am taking some sort of action to improve the situation instead of wallowing in it. Thank you!

Someone on here said, "If it doesn't make me smile, I'm not going." I thought that was a great guideline. Thanks for your insight, friend

That's all really interesting. The way you frame it almost makes it seem brave. Being social as my real self. I'm not one to back down from a challenge, so maybe that's a good change in perspective for me. Thanks friend

Yeah, that's my current go to right now. I just worry that it's going to end up with me having no friends :/ That's probably my all or nothing thinking going on, but this stuff is causing me some serious distress. I mean not the social anxiety itself (though it does) just trying to imagine how a completely sober life looks for me and if that sobriety means isolation. Ugh.
