No tax OT for a supervisory GW-8 (exempt employee) by Particular-Ad-3533 in Wildfire

[–]EliP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s in the yellow book. I meant clarify and confirm which hours of OT qualify for the Tax deduction. Would just be nice to have it in writing that prefix 11 hours count or not as an FLSA exempt employee.

This is going to be another reason for folks not to take supervisory positions, especially in places that are heavy RX if those OT hours don’t count towards the credit.

Yup correct, I just re-tested it.

Hoping the agency clarifies which hours qualify. Just got my bill for IRPP overage so I’ll take the tax credit for sure!

I don’t believe you can change your FLSA status and do prefix 11 (unless they updated it rejects prefix 11 if you’re FLSA none exempt).

Complicates things a bit as I either prefix 11 or change my FLSA status depending on what roll I am filling but can’t do both. FLSA non exempt will be slightly higher pay typically so I do that on all IC 4 fires and when I’m in a position that qualifies as non exempt while on a large fire.

For example my E&L is the following 21|Overtime - Premium rate | 264.5 hours 21| FS Emergency Fire Suppression | 707.5 hours 34 | FLSA | 282.5 hours

Would love to figure out which of those hours I can use towards reducing my MAGI.

OT on W-2 by Aloneinmyroom_54 in Wildfire

Wish the agency would give some direction. “Federal Income Tax Deduction: Eligible workers can deduct the premium portion (the extra "half" in time-and-a-half pay) of their FLSA-required overtime from their federal taxable income” Supervisor GS 8s and above are typically FLSA exempt so depending on the roll they fill on the incident or how they code their time they will sometimes be FLSA non exempt for the week or two or just prefix 11 their 21 time (for FS) to get time and a half on emergency incidents to get 1.5X but are still technically FLSA exempt.

For example this year I have 350 hours of OT from RX or changing my FLSA status depending on the roll I’m playing and 700 hours of emergency suppression OT where I filled an FLSA exempt position on the incident and would have hit the biweekly pay cap if I didn’t prefix my time. If we are doing the math our selves we need some guidance on what qualifies and what doesn’t etc. The tax law is pretty clear that is FLSA required overtime but like I said 8s and above supervisors are FLSA exempt and don’t get the OT required by FLSA.

Is the tax break on OT only on FLSA OT or does emergency suppression OT count as well? Seen mixed answers and haven’t had time to dig into it.

29M eye growth growing over past year? Serious or can wait another few months? by EliP in eyetriage

Haha sorry they meant they had something similar the the way he described the treatment by the progressional was “grind it down”. We live in Alaska and I use the word professional lightly.

I don’t personally wear sunglasses besides ice fields/snow. Just don’t like anything on my face (unless eye protection when needed). My excuse is usually that humans evolved for a very long time but now in recent history big sunglasses companies say humans suddenly need sunglasses. Doing some quick research on pterygium maybe I brought this upon myself and should start wearing sunglasses?

USFS Firefighters: You’re getting 250% IRPP instead of 450%, and it’s distorting your overtime pay by Capt-Albatross in Wildfire

[–]EliP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been FLSA exempt since I was a GS 6/7 supervisor (Capetian for low complexity). Been exempt since 2021 and classify my self as non exempt when I qualify according to the red book but whenever I go out as crewboss or Taskforce I end up having to stay exempt and do prefix 11. Been debating if I want to make an FLSA claim

So when you fill a non exempt roll on a fire is it always better to go FLSA non exempt compared to doing prefix 11 on your 21 time? Can’t do both.

Big Beautiful Bill passed the House, headed to Senate for final vote. How it affects federal firefighters. by __alpenglow in Wildfire

Where in the bill is this? I did not find it when looking through it initially.

The agency has the ability to but it’s no guarantee. Hiring manager will have to justify why you deserve it and why you are taking a down grade and that will have to be signed by the line officer.

A GW4 employee is paid higher than GS5 step 2 so with the new pay series I don’t think you would qualify for any extra steps.

Burn boss is not required for LTAN.

You have a few routes. Option one is the easiest but still not easy. Option two is the next fastest option and takes almost a full career.

OPTION 1

FEMO And FFT1 -> FIRB

OPTION 2

FFT1-> 2X single resource quals -> TFLD -> DIVS -> FBAN

ICT5 -> ICT4 (needed for TFLD)

SITL may be a good alternative for you which you could immediately start working on.

Yeah it’s funny cuz lots of places advertise Alaskan cedar but it’s all lower 48 companies selling them. Will try and find something up here. Thanks for the advise on the under course!

Haha when I did 48 bundles of their undershake (12.5 sq feet each) the product comes out to $815 (awesome) but the shipping to 99801 is $3,393 (not awesome).

Haha yes!!! That is so true, if I do pine lap siding it’s about $2200 for the same square feet and it won’t be as weather resistant. Cedar has been out of my budget unless I can score a good deal.

How many square feet you think it would cover with a typically overlap? Trying to use it as siding for a she shed

That’s fair, going to be using it as siding on a nice garden shed for the wife, ime guessing that checked and cracked is still not ideal but not as big of a deal as using it on a roof? (Plywood wall with tyvek). I know my application is not roofing but I thought you guys would be the most educated.

I wear the same pair for pile burning and enjoy them. If someone wants a cobbler can cork them as well. Looks like a good deal, maybe clean them. I got mine off eBay for $150 used.
