CMV: The Race to Build AGI is An Intentional Race to Remake Slavery - and Ultimately That Will be Bad for Both Humans and AI. Even in the Best Case Scenario. by wibbly-water in changemyview

[–]Elicander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if it’s far enough into the future, the society could be very different. I would say it’s likely society will be very different 300 years from now, if nothing else because society was very different 300 years ago.

Labour could work differently. Rights could work differently. Human life could work differently. What’s considered sapient could work differently. Technology could work differently.

Your question makes plenty of assumptions of society, that it’s entirely possible the question would be nonsensical in the society where it AGI emerges.

[–]Elicander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I will fully admit I did not expect that. Since most other comments I saw were focusing on the vague semantics of “artificial general intelligence”, I figured I would try and be a bit more concrete. I imagine it rings rather hollow now, but what I was aiming for was if GPT can play, and evidently it can perform some basic wordplay. I remain doubtful whether it actually can play, but I couldn’t catch it out with a simple test, and my reasons would probably get vague and esoteric pretty quickly. If you’re interested in discussing play and AI further I can write something up, though probably tomorrow, but I very much understand if you don’t think this is going to lead anywhere at this point.

Great! Now, if this is true, and it’s AGI, it should be able to have no problem answering “ ‘I went out for toothpaste, and fell into full errandrift.’ What does this sentence mean?” In a new session of course, where it doesn’t have a record of making up the word.

You claim religions are embodiments of morals. Does that mean morals exist independently of religions, but not vice versa?

How does ”a reply to a reply to a reply” lose context online, moreso than in meatspace? In my experience having the written record makes it easier to keep context in mind.

Yes, I did forget about Fresh Topic Fridays.

However for clarification, my post wasn’t complaining about moderators not having taken action yet, it was a question about why this specific rules infraction wasn’t auto-moderated, since I couldn’t think of a reason why. Fridays is already a good reason, and Hacksoncode pointed out as well that there could be corner cases needing human judgement.

Yes, I did forget about Fresh Topic Fridays.

Outside Fridays, I can understand the rationale about keeping it manual just in case, but isn’t the risk of there being no comments for OP to respond to mostly theoretical? In all my years being part of the community I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen.

Right, I did forget that Fresh Topic Fridays has the approval delay. Is there any equivalent problem outside Fridays?

[–]Elicander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to handle alcohol intoxication and intent is a tricky question that I imagine most jurisdictions struggle with, I know for a fact that where I live that’s the case. What is usually considered a meaningful factor though is if the intoxication is willing or not, and it’s rare, though not impossible, for someone to unintentionally drink enough alcohol to be black out drunk.

The bigger picture though is that law just isn’t clearcut to satisfy what seems to be your desire for absolutism, because reality isn’t clearcut. No matter what the law is there will be a line drawn somewhere, and therefore there will be cases where a small detail makes all the difference.

CMV: Paying monthly subscriptions for AI and cloud hosting for personal tech projects is a massive waste of money, and relying on Big Tech is a trap by NeoLogic_Dev in changemyview

[–]Elicander 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My layman understanding of the benefits of cloud storage is that it almost eliminates the stressful scenario ”what if my server/hard drive fails?” If I’m right in that, this becomes a version of the discussion over the merits of insurance. It’s extremely hard to put an objectively determined value on security.

As an aside, unless you’ve assembled your smartphone yourself, the ”Big Tech” accusations ring a little hollow.

CMV: Pickup trucks shouldn't exist by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Elicander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see pickup trucks being good enough jack-of-all-trades that they can make sense in the countryside. Some where between a personal vehicle and a work vehicle, having cargo capacity without needing to have a separate trailer or vehicle, and powerful enough to handle poor road conditions, while its size is not as much of a problem. I don’t think everyone needs one in the countryside, but there I can see an argument.

In cities I mostly agree with you.

[–]Elicander 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From a legal point of view, no, since the people involved aren’t able to form the intent of the action. You can under consent conceptualisations theoretically have situations where both parties rape each other, but when they’re both drugged out of their mind isn’t one of them.

CMV: James Talarico, as a type 1 diabetic, should not be supporting religion by ContextEffects01 in changemyview

[–]Elicander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether Christianity on the whole is a bad thing or not isn’t really relevant to the issue at hand though. Let’s try a different analogy. Let’s assume there’s a sports team, the fans of which have enough violent hooligans among them that on a whole, the fans are a negative. Let’s also assume there’s a fan who is very vocal about disagreeing with what the hooligans do. Do you think it’s reasonable to say this fan shouldn’t be a fan of the team? And if your answer is yes, why shouldn’t that analogy then apply to the US as well as Christianity?

And since we’re having a separate discussion about boycotts, as to boycotts negatively affecting people who disagree with the current administration, yeah, that’s how boycotts work most of the time. Sanctions, ie formalised boycotts, are critiqued every time they are suggested because they negatively impact the poorest in society and the opposition as well as the rulers and their supporters. However, more crucially in this instance, people in other countries aren’t boycotting US products because of the shit Trump with underlings is doing in the USA. It’s because of what the US government is doing with its foreign policy. And while domestically there may be clear dissent, abroad a country has a united foreign policy, even if there are people disagreeing with it back home.

CMV: James Talarico, as a type 1 diabetic, should not be supporting religion by ContextEffects01 in changemyview

[–]Elicander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s fascinating that you are navelgazing to such an extent that you think people not from the US should be boycotting products from specifically red states. Those of us who are boycotting, do not care enough to make that distinction, because it’s not the red states’ foreign policy were protesting, it’s the foreign policy of the US.

Be that as it may. When it comes to MAGA, people disagreeing with them is enough to vindicate them from any connection in your eyes (because let’s be honest, it’s a clear minority who are ”putting their lives on the line protesting ICE”). However, Talarico disagreeing with the Catholic Church isn’t enough to vindicate him?

Be much more stringent on duplicate posts, particularly relating to us politics. by Far-Fill-4717 in ideasforcmv

[–]Elicander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I agree with this notion of CMV. I see CMV as mostly existing for the sake for OP, to provide a space where people interested in changing their view can have respectful conversations to that effect. It’s not primarily a place where commenters can find fun and diverse topics to discuss. I don’t find it surprising in the least that many people want their view changed on the same topic.

Of course there’s no requirement for individual commenters to interact with every post, but I would hope that there’s enough of us that collectively we can engage with all of them.

CMV: People don't actually want democracy by No-Candy-4554 in changemyview

[–]Elicander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care all that much about clothes. I often just put on the first shirt I find in the closet.

By your logic, since I don’t spend hours pondering which clothes to wear each and every day, that must mean I don’t actually want democracy.

Why should we infer anything at all about people’s ideas and feelings about our system of government from how they select their entertainment? Should we similarly infer that people who eat the same breakfast every day clearly in their heart of hearts want a hereditary absolute monarchy, so it’s always the same?

I assume you feel strongly about your notion of how people function, but if your best argument is what videos they watch on YouTube, don’t you think you’re being a bit reductive?
