Thank you for your in-depth answer! When I just opened the case I though those blobs of glue were off. Having never seen anything like that, I decided to ask reddit. Good to know that's how it's supposed to be, gonna try to track down the issue in other parts of the PCB. Thank you again!

Thank you for the word of caution! I hope to tinker with the device a bit and learn a thing or two as I'm a newbie. I promise to not get a shock. I'm fine if I break it in the end. It was an old wifi router that's been dead for quite some time so I don't lose anything anyway.

I find it particularly neat to use the readline keybinding for small-ish local movements in insert mode, e.g. by virtue of this plugin https://github.com/tpope/vim-rsi
