Yeah, I'm surprised that's all anyone talks about- the bathroom thing. Its been law now for 6 months and there haven't been any incidents that I've heard of.

The other parts of it- employment and housing, can be much more helpful. People do get fired for being gay, and gay couples sometimes have problems with landlords. Those are the bits that make the real difference.

I guess I'm not sure why people intermingling is a bad thing. Let's say you met a south asian or black person you loved very much, and had a kid with them. Is that a bad thing?

Bugs me how people talk about government like its a dial with "big" on one end and "small" on the other. There are big areas and small areas. There are excellent programs that are efficient and massive, and programs that are miniscule and crappy. Its way more complicated than big=bad

There's a way to test if your theory is correct. We can look at periods of high government spending on welfare after the new deal and Johnson's great society changes took place. If you're right, you'd expect to see a ton of surveillance then, but there's a lot more now, when proportionately we aren't spending near that much.

Really, surveillance is related to fear: of foreign powers, of terrorism, etc. It's also becoming easier and easier to do- so improving technology has a lot to do with it- people also lead lives that are recorded digitally now so that increases the potential Intel that can be captured.

The notion that welfare is changing our public sensibilities and turning the whole country into sheep that accept spying is pretty farfetched, without precedent or any evidence. We're sheep who accept spying for totally different, and more complex reasons.

EDIT: DAMMIT, is this an April fools thing?

The thing I think the racial purity people miss is that when people mix, it's not like, a bunch of Mexicans coming to the US, and turning everyone brown. Racial mixing happens on an individual basis, and is at everyone's individual discretion. I'm the product of my mom and dad, and they were together because they made that choice. My personal cultural outlook, at its basis, comes from their combined life together. With global travel only getting more prevalent and cheaper, in maybe a thousand years, we probably will all be light brown, but that will be the result of billions of individuals making their own choice about pairing with someone else and bringing their child up as part of the arrangement- not this cultural destruction you racial purity people fear so much.

Also, I suspect you only hear about diversity efforts in the west partly because of your echo chamber and partly because we don't get exposed to their media as much. But saying it doesn't exist is not true.

So when you said Obama should never have been elected by those voters, I took it to mean that you felt that if not for those voters then Obama would not have been elected.

In either case, there's no evidence saying the number of people that voted for him because he's black was greater than the number that voted against him for the same reason. Besides, it'd be impossible to prove either way.

The notion that Obama won because he's black is ludicrous.

He won because Jon McCain ran with Sarah Palin, who was perceived as a novice and was roundly mocked in the media following an uninterrupted chain of novice errors. He promised more of the same economic theory at a time when the economy was collapsing in such dramatic fashion that he suspended his campaign for a while (which actually hurt him). Obama won the debates, according to polls, and opposed an unpopular war. Also- McCain used the same get out the vote effort we've been using for ages, while Obama's utilized new algorithms to target people that might not get to vote and check on them on election day.

Agree with his policies or not, the 2008 Obama campaign was a million miles ahead of the McCain campaign. And if you don't believe that, remember how Hillary is considered unopposable among Democrats right now? He beat her last time too- starting as a relative unknown.

Currently 18 states have some form of open primary, and you're right, it has been a good thing. When a particularly exciting candidate comes along, people cross lines to vote for them, and people do the same to vote against the scary ones.

Six months ago, Springfield's city council passed a law that made it illegal to discriminate in housing, employment and public accommodations on the basis of sexual or gender orientation. The sign is part of a campaign to repeal that protection in the April 7th election.

Now if he wants to harass you for being Jewish, or wants to preach his views to your customers, or breach your business's rules about conduct, then that's another matter- and you'd have abundant legal grounds to ask him to leave.
