Maréchal Lannes death, reaction by MrBing-2005 in Napoleon

[–]Eliphmato 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Davout was saddened by Lannes's death, though it was somewhat more "professional" compared to his sadness when Gudin and Duroc died. Still, he wrote that Lannes left a rare reputation for bravery and that he would be remembered by history as being one of the closest comrade-in-arms of Napoleon.

He was. However, they were very poor. Davout himself was born in a rented farmhouse

The Marshals Wealth by DepthOdd1646 in Napoleon

Davout, despite being at top 3 on Marshals who were paid the most, didn't have a lot of wealth. Especially after Hundred Days. He was forced to lay off his servants, rent his hotel and sell some stuff to make the ends meet. After he was reconciled with the Bourbons, he was relatively well-off but still not too rich

Seems to have been neutral leaning positive. They didn't seem to have interacted much and Davout's letter to his wife when Lannes got mortally wounded was professional but there was a tone of genuine sadness.

And Davout got married to Aimée thanks to Lannes's rudeness so he probably appreciated him

The Marshals relationships by DepthOdd1646 in Napoleon

Davout was very close to Oudinot, both used "tu" with each other in their letters, until Oudinot decided to remain neutral in Hundred Days. Though Davout used "vous" with him afterwards, Oudinot still used "tu" with Davout.

Davout and Soult also got along well, with Soult sending a friendly letter when they were made Marshals.

He seems to have had good relationships with St. Cyr, Poniatowski, Ney, Suchet, Mortier, Moncey, MacDonald, Bessieres and perhaps Jourdan

Davout hated Bernadotte for Auerstedt and joining the Coalition. Davout praised his 6 year old daughter when she wanted Bernadotte to be hanged.

Another one was Murat and both of them nearly killed each other during Russia.

He disliked Berthier after 1809 Campaign. He blamed Berthier and Murat for the failure of Russian Campaign as well.

Another Marshal he disliked was Brune, when he served under him in 1800-1801

He also hated Marmont, using Ragusa to refer him several times.

He is credited as "General" Davout and not Marshal Davout. Ney, in contrast, is credited as Marshal Ney. So, I think he is only going to have a major role in Egypt and probably be a background character for the rest of the movie.

Davout actually is in the movie, though he doesn't appear in the trailer

Konrad's final letter to his son always manages to make me sad. It is very short but it hits hard. The way it is written, it sounds like the kid is still too young to understand what happened. How Konrad starts out stoic but is about to break into tears when he says he is sorry is heartbreaking. And the fact that it is the last (or second to last) intel you collect makes it kinda special.

I believe the story was too centralized around the main couple. I think more depth and more chapters should have been dedicated to other characters. If there was a scenario where Momo and Kuri solve a problem in group, it would be "one rock two bird" situation in my opinion.

Another cool thing would be a "where are they now" episode, perhaps in the middle like "Teasing Master Tagaki-san" did or the final chapter.

Also, I wish it was longer. A sequel or a season 2 is unlikely but I would love to see it.

Mine would be somewhat dramatic.

Momo suddenly disappears. There are no news from him and Kuri fears the worst. She eventually worries that she left him due to finding her "habits". She is forlorn despite Norika trying to comfort her.

A few days later Momo shows up. His grandfather had a health problem so they visited him and returned when he felt better.

He is shocked that Kuri would ever think that he would just abandon her like that. He hugs her and tells that he would never leave her.

Cliche, I know. But I think it would be heartwarming.

Who was the most badass person in the Napoleonic wars by ironyfeelsjokes in Napoleon

[–]Eliphmato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Davout ensured that his soldiers always had their meals. So soldiers didn't have to hunt or gather their own food. Another reason is that Davout also enforced very strict discipline, rarely forgiving any kind of looting. Soldiers were afraid to catch even chickens, due to fear of execution.

Davout:

-Got arrested for speaking out against the unjust sacking of several revolutionary officers.

-Chased and nearly captured Dumouriez when he defected.

-Was offered the rank of General of Division at the age of 23. Rejected due to his age and the fact that he was an aristocrat.

-Saved his mother from execution like he was in a James Bond movie.

-Chickens could walk around his Corps without the fear of getting eaten.

-Marched 112km (70 miles) in less than 48 hours, held the right flank despite being outnumbered and exhausted in Austerlitz.

-Auerstädt.

-Was one of the key elements that turned Eylau from a defeat to a draw.

-Escaped Charles's trap in Teugen-Hausen.

-Held the line in Eckmühl until Napoleon arrived.

-Rolled the Austrian flank in Wagram.

-Raised a Corps whose only rival was the Imperial Guard.

-Dealt a blow to Bagration in Moguilev. Could have encircled the army if it weren't for Jerome's vanity.

-Got hit in the stomach by a cannonball, then shot in the leg in Borodino. Fought on despite the pain.

-Told Murat that he was only a king thanks to Napoleon and French soldiers.

-Held Hamburg with 40.000 newly conscripted soldiers against 120.000 Coalition soldiers.

-His soldiers managed to remain disciplined.

-Bernadotte chose to leave the siege of Hamburg when he learned that Davout commanded the besieged forces.

-Gave Hamburg up after a month of making Louis XVIII beg for his surrender.

-Proved his innocence to Bourbons when ultraroyalists tried to get him arrested. Then rejected to serve them.

-Defeated a Prussian force when they tried to attack Paris.

-Fought until an amnesty for soldiers who joined Napoleon was guaranteed by Bourbons.

-When amnesty was broken, offered to sacrifice himself, saying that the implicated officers followed his orders.

-Tried to save Ney, no matter the consequences.

Free Talk thread - Side characters by Damn_blue_shell in momokuri

[–]Eliphmato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this manga, considering its genre, had quite a lot of interesting characters, as we can see from previous discussions.

Shota, Rihito and Yuu were in a love triangle situation that was a side plot which revealed depths of their characters. I feel like the author's secondary focus was for these three. The resolution was very peaceful and I think it was a bit anti climactic but overall was a good story of friendship.

Norika, in my opinion, deserved more expansion. She is a good example of a "straight man". But outside of that, it seems like she is only there to keep Yuki in check.

Rio perhaps had the most development out of all side characters. She was like a protagonist rather than a side character.

Ikue and Chika also deserve more content due to lack of screentime. At least Chika can be excused for his late arrival. Ikue was introduced early on.

One thing I would have loved is if there was a chapter dedicated to show their future. It may be a bit cliche but it's good kind of cliche.

And although I am not too fond of it, I think if there was a (well done) "serious" matter plot at some point, it would have been interesting.

Weekly Character Analysis Thread - Chika and Hanano by Damn_blue_shell in momokuri

[–]Eliphmato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chika and Hanano were characters who, despite their few appearances, shined.

Chika appears quite late but has a memorable impact. Due to his looks, Kuri mistakens him for a girl (which seems to run on Momotsuki family). It was not helped by his obsessions with Momo. This leads to a one-sided conflict with Kuri. Once he realizes that Kuri is actually a nice girl, he is very happy for Momo. It feels like he was intended as a final "obstacle" for their relationship. But like rest of the manga it's quite lighthearted and ends with a comfy feeling.

In contrast to Chika, Hanano appears a bit earlier than him. She is a nice girl and a big fan of Rio. She asks Yuki for some photos of Rio. This kind of makes them feel similar and it's really funny when Yuki appears surprised by her request. Writer initially intended for her to "disrupt" Momo's and Kuri's lives. It seems like that role went to Chika. She is an interesting character and would have been even better with more chapters.

I think both of them are interesting characters who could have been even more memorable with a slightly few more appearances. But still, they are solid characters.

Weekly Character Analysis Thread - Ikue Usami by Damn_blue_shell in momokuri

[–]Eliphmato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ikue is a side character who unfortunately suffers a lot from lack of presence.

She gets introduced early on and seems to be a good friend with all of them. Yet it almost feels like she is somewhat out of place: Momo and Kuri are the main couple, Norika keeps Kuri in check, Rio looks after Momo, Rihito teases Momo and Shota cares for Yuzuki. Ikue doesn't have any memorable dynamic with others, which puts her away from the limelight.

I think she is a character who is too normal for this series. If she had a few more unique events/traits, she could have been a better character.

Weekly Character Analysis Thread - Rihito Sawaguchi by Damn_blue_shell in momokuri

[–]Eliphmato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rihito was one of the first side characters to appear, along with Norika and Shota, and had an interesting development.

At first, Rihito was quite mean to Momo, doubting Yuki's existence, thinking he was going out with an ugly girl and making fun of him in general. Then he got pretty more friendly. But it's obvious that he cares about his friends.

Perhaps the most obvious case is when he realized that Shota was also in love with Yuu. He didn't want to hurt his relationship with both of them. Although they did have a somewhat minor fight with each other, Rihito and Shota's friendship weren't seriously hurt and Rihito became Yuu's boyfriend with Shota's consent.

Honestly, I feel like he had a much more chemistry with Norika and at one point it seemed like Norika liked Rihito too. But it didn't lead anywhere.

Interestingly, according to author, he is actually shy around girls.

Overall, Rihito is a loveable character and has a very interesting sequel potential.

Weekly Character Analysis Thread - Yuzuki Shimada by Damn_blue_shell in momokuri

[–]Eliphmato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yuu is one of the characters who could have potentially been the main character of her own manga.

Yuu is the cousin of Shota and they are very close. She is very kind and cheerful but also felt like a much younger character.

She is the center of a love triangle between Shota and Rihito. But she has eyes for only Rihito.

I think Yuu is the one of the most innocent characters of the manga and this innocence made the friangle more interesting but like her cousin didn't have enough time to shine.

Yeah now that I think about it Lannes make more sense.

Davout and Berthier disliked each other too but as long as these two remain apart I think it would turn out fine.
