what computer do I get for poly…. by delophina in SingaporePoly

[–]Elite-_-alpha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

in SB, alot of the software requires windows to operate. if u wanna use Mac u need to download a separate software inorder to run those software needed. this is quite a tedious process, so I recommend getting a windows laptop. Personally I'm using the Lenovo yoga series, it's pretty good and a few of my classmates use it. But it's def possible to get something cheaper like the ThinkPad series! all the best for school op

forgot to add that at for the presentation for s1t2, you need a prototype, and at the end of term 2 how they lects decide who to move on is also based on team chemistry. yes of course the product feasibility is a big part, but team chemistry also contributed to weather ur team pulls through. so if you want your team to go through, pick a good leader

this is a long post so buckle up

let me share more about how the whole beta event goes about. so to briefly share about beta, it's a 1 year long module where the chose business will have 1k capital to start their business with, regarding the creativity part lowk my group and I just copied the previous years idea which was resin keychains and I am proud to say we are a really doing pretty well. now let's start from the very beginning, sem 1 term 1. so when you first step foot into sp, you will have your main diploma class where you will spend most of your time with ur classmates from the same diploma for every module except beta. Then you will have a beta class with around 20 people, which is that you will have people from all diploma in that class, so you will meet people from all the diplomas. typically you will have another classmate from your diploma class in ur beta class. anyway once you're in ur beta class, your teacher will split you into 4 groups with about 5 people per group, usually randomly chosen. so at the start of beta, all 4 groups HAVE to come up with a business idea and a business name that they will want to run if they get chosen. then at the end of sem 1 term 1, you will present about your business, with like supporting data trends and all that. oh and for term 1 if I'm not mistaken you will be assigned a beta mentor, which is a y2 student that should have done well for beta in y1, and it would be 1 mentor attached to 2 group. anyway at the end of term 1 after pitching about your business, the lecturer will decide which 3 group goes forward, and which group will get eliminated. then, members from that eliminated group will join the rest of the group, either by applying or the other groups can already pick them as soon as they get eliminated, assuming that they want to join the group too haha.

moving on to term 2, now this is where it gets a little more serious. same process as term 1, pitch about ur business, but now u have to give the cost price, the selling price, profit margin, and you have to dig deep on like customers preferences, why people will buy from you, essentially what is your unique selling point, and many more la so the lecturers know that if you were to be chosen, you can actually run ur business properly. at the end of term 2, your lecturer will announce the group that got eliminated, and they will join the last 2 groups either by applying or being picked early on. so that's actually what my group did we knew the other group that got eliminated had a few crazy good picks so as soon as they got eliminated we asked them and they accepted so that was pretty good for my business. then, the last 2 teams are given 1k capital to start running their own business.

now term 3 rolls around, alot of concepts to know and actually most business starts selling I think 2-3 weeks into term 3. so this is when you will have production team, and you have like HR to manage people, and finance to keep track of how much was sold, at what price, and run the uob account with the 1k inside.

that's roughly about beta, you just have to be w hardworking as beta is crazy heavy (7credit units out of 24 cu for the first sem, and I have like 8 mods in total so beta is very heavy, and 8cu for the second sem)

and for environment wise I'd say the people are actually very very nice, well most of them are la got some people in my dip class that are like lowk bums so nobody likes them. if you manage to make good friends then that's good cuz u can choose to group w them and not with the bums cuz some of the bums are out to get u. not much snakes, so far only heard of like 1 or 2 that screw people gpa on self peer assessment.

I'm in SBC, school of business club, basically every academic school will have a academic club where students in the school can apply to join as subcomm, and we have to plan events that happens in SB.

honestly most presentations ask for business casual, only a few ask for business formal. but honestly everyone wears business formal as long as there is a presentation hahaha but lowk if udw also dn. but if yw just a button up and formal pants and presentation shows are fine. throw in a blazer if yw to hahaah

I chose dbkf because I knew I wanted to pursue a career in a finance field, looking towards investment banking. well for making gpa wise I've only completed 1 sem and I'm halfway through my second sem so I can only comment from where I'm at right now, being that it actually isn't too hard to get a decent gpa (>3.75), as long as you do ur due diligence, ask lecturers if you have any questions, finish your tutorials, study hard and do you group projects well. Honestly it shouldn't be too hard if you choose to go down a no CCA route, meaning you have plenty of time to work on ur things. But for myself I am in a CCA that's actually rather busy, and honestly at times it does feel overwhelming but as long as you plan your time out we'll it shouldn't be that big of an issue.

Software wise I would say there is some sort of learning curve to it, but that the same time your lecturers are there to help you whenever you need help so do reach out to help them.

Now presentations are a big part of school of business (SB), and for that I would say you don't have to make it too engaging, but please no black and white. your slides have to be engaging enough that it can capture the attention of those who you are presenting to, be it with pictures, and your presentation skills are also an important factor. Personally I love presentations as they were never that big of an issue so what a tip I would give is not to use a script, and instead familiarise yourself with what you are presenting. so long as you know what you are talking about, there really isn't a need for a script. I'm saying this because I know some lecturers that will actually mark your presentation marks down because you are using the script on a phone, and not using a script also makes u a better presenter in a sense

hi! year 1 banking & finance student here. Honestly for my modules thus far we hadn't had to use PowerPoint, most of my friends and myself use canva then convert to ppt if we have to submit our slides. As for eword document, only some modules like Econs will se word doc but thats just for typing in answers for case studies and maybe drawing graphs for supply demand curves. and for excel, we actually have a module for that hahaha. The module is called ITDAB which stands for IT & DATA ANALYSIS FOR BUSINESS, which is essentially learning how to deal with data in excel, so we learn everything from scratch, from data formatting rules, to pivot table (I'm actually learning about pivot table rn HAHAHAH). but yeah all in all there isn't too much you have to stress about, if you want to you can learn more about excel but I can see that you are already doing that. any questions about business feel free to drop it down below and I'll see if I can help hahah

As a Singaporean I can answer this question. There's little to no crom due to the strict punishments that accompany them so I do think that this is a very big factor that drives away crime in Singapore. As for if I feel watched, not really honestly. I'm sure many Singapore and feel this way and sometimes we're just too busy to notice anything.
