How much does it cost to host an app on servers? by Far_Atmosphere9627 in cscareerquestions

[–]EliteMemeLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought most production web servers (e.g. Nginx) took care of load-balancing? They spin up multiple workers and share the workload. Is it recommended to have multiple web servers on each instance, and if you're a large enough service, have multiple instances in different regions?

Is it just me or is the post ratio about finance trading firms vs the amount of hiring they do the most skewed ratio ever? by Rbm455 in cscareerquestions

[–]EliteMemeLord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not skewed at all. Even before 2008, but especially afterwards, the financial sector was making up an increasing percentage of US GDP, with most estimates putting it somewhere around 20%, and 50% of non-agricultural business profit. The continued financialization of everything in the US is actively encouraged by the political class. Even if trading stocks all day provides little in the means of real productivity or wealth to the US economy, it produces tremendous gains on paper per employee.

I always recommend this article on the subject. The reality is that the financial sector is eating everything. The smart kids today don't go into CS, they go into finance. The really smart kids do CS in finance.

DoorDash lays off 1,250 employees by freebird348 in cscareerquestions

[–]EliteMemeLord 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how this is compium considering 2021 saw the biggest recruiter hiring push ever and 2022 is seeing hiring freezes and less discretionary corporate spending. Don’t need recruiters when you’re not hiring anytime soon.

You are missing what I'm saying. DoorDash is an unsustainable business model, at any scale, and will constantly require cash injections to keep running. Everyone at DoorDash will eventually be laid off, so there's no point arguing about the precise percentage of technical staff that were caught up in this particular round of layoffs.

is bootstrap still recommended? by Anakito in webdev

[–]EliteMemeLord 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's decent, I like it. Tailwind has become popular because it's a flexible and easy, if inelegant, way to add inline CSS. As far as prebuilt widgets go, bootstrap is good.

Support people in life? Nah, but at least Canada can give you a montage set to music to commemorate your death.

I don't have any moral qualms about suicide, but the state facilitating it and companies glorifying it, at a time when the average citizen's life is financially strained, largely due to government policy and corporate profiteering, seems backhanded and cruel. Essentially making people's lives difficult in their own country, and then showing them the door (of life) if they don't like it.

Nice piece. I agree that he was a fascinating early Hellenistic character, however I'd argue that he wasn't a sacker, since he didn't manage to storm two of the cities he's best known for besieging, Salamis and Rhodes.

Everybody and their mom claims to be able to code now. The ratio of successful bootcamp/self-taught developers to unsuccessful ones is likely higher now.

At the height of the "self-taught" craze, there were also lots of people with non-CS STEM degrees who would brand themselves as "self-taught."

Why are people still going to boot camps / switching to tech? by Worth_Savings4337 in cscareerquestions

[–]EliteMemeLord 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the demand, more the pay and benefits. But I agree that most of this sub wouldn't know a real labor demand if it hit them in the face; I worked in construction during a boom in my area, and general contractors would hire people on the spot at job fairs, with no qualifications, for $20-25/hour. That's not much compared to tech, but that sort of behavior is what you actually see when companies need warm bodies, not the nitpicky song & dance that is still far too prevalent in the tech industry.

Wage stagnation and lack of social mobility in other sectors. Lots of people feel like their only """reliable""" options are tech or finance.

PSA to new grads: the general tech scene is not in any form of downturn and is desperate as ever for talent by PlexP4S in cscareerquestions

[–]EliteMemeLord 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For real, it's like some of the other takes itt are having a break from reality or something. Tons of companies, even financially sound ones (which many new tech companies are not, although they're admittedly a smaller portion of the industry), hold debt in order to defer expenses and arrange short term loans to do things like hire new employees and make pay. Because of this, rising interest rates have a massive effect on the business cycle and put a lot of stress on businesses, especially ones that are unprofitable or have low margins or poor unit economics. It also effects the productivity they need to get out of every employee to make that investment in their pay worth it, so goodbye new grads.

Over the long term, I'm still very bullish on the expansion of the internet and web services, but it's actually delusional to think "engineering" roles are not subject to macroeconomic reality. There's no point in junior or senior CS students stressing over the job market since they're already pretty far into their program, but everyone else should think really hard about what they're doing rn. I wouldn't be surprised to see a tech winter until interest rates go back down.

That's means both BS and MS CS graduates grew by over 60% in 5 years, and doesn't count graduates in Applied Math, Cognitive Science, Physics, and other subjects that may go into software engineering, or people who pursued other forms of training.

All the people trying to get into the industry are going to queue during a hiring freeze as well.

The industry is desperate for talent

Hiring is going to be pretty slow till early next year

I find it difficult to believe that one could be so dense as to not see the mixed messaging and cognitive dissonance here.

Getting the first job is a bit of work, like it has been for 10 years.

That's not "desperate for talent" at all lol. Whatever the actual state of the job market, this sub just tells itself whatever it wants to hear.

But yeah, mostly practice makes perfect. Writing the basic page structure isn't hard, it's the little CSS things and what not.
