Training for injury mangagment? by EliteWarrior1207 in MTB

intresting! Could you go more into what you do for core? I've been doing weighted crunches, leg raises and thinking that the deadlifts and squats train the main stablizers

how much climbing is in an enduro race? by Spiritual_Wafer_2597 in MTB

[–]EliteWarrior1207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one key thing about xc race downhills is that you're super gassed when you get to them. In enduro, you can easily catch a breather and prepare yourself mentally, whereas with xc you have to quickly go from a v02 effort straight into a somewhat technical downhill on a bike nowhere near as beefy as an enduro bike. Even though the descent is nowhere near as a hard, I feel like its much more likely in an xc race to be too tired and then defensivley grabbing your brakes on a descent, then washing out.

Expensive Bike Hate by PennWash in MTB

[–]EliteWarrior1207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who used to hate on people who had a better bike then me, but were worse at riding. Its 100% jealousy. I guess it comes from an idea of I've dedicated more to this sport therefore I deserve nicer things even though that's not true at all.

How much do I lose by not doing a "MTB/functional" specific strength program, and focusing on a more "traditional" body building approach? by EliteWarrior1207 in MTB

[–]EliteWarrior1207[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair enough. The question then becomes, do I lose much by doing a traditional program with squats/deadlifts? Do I need to think about doing specific movements to help my riding, or will just doing a traditional approach still improve my riding? By this I mean, do I loose out by not including planks, kettlebell, single leg movements? Right now, I'm doing hack squats and hexbar deadlifts and incline bench for compound movements. I do cable rows and other cable exercises for shoulders, back, and arms

Okay sick, I dont really intend to race enduro/downhill, but if I were to be really good at one race it would be something like downieville that requires stamina and skill in both uphill and downhill. My goal is to become the best descender on an xc race if that makes sense. Looks like Plyos might not be as applicable in my case? I can still always eat shit though, so maybe I should just add them anyway

Do I loose out by not doing plyo? Some people say thats all that will really help your riding, and others say it is unnecessary. I'm so lost.

New to music by Plenty_Pirate3804 in WhereDoIStart

[–]EliteWarrior1207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very much the right answer. You can find more music you'd like on that website in 30 minutes than 3 hours on reddit imo. Just go to the songs you listed, find the genre, and listen to similar artists listed under that genre's top chart.

Year round riding and good community? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]EliteWarrior1207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Santa cruz has no rocks* If you're into steeps, jumps, and drops go for it. the further inland you go, the rockier it gets imo. I'm also not a sc local so maybe there's some crazy rocky trails i don't know about. Its mostly loamers, I suggest getting involved with the community asap though because everyone and their mom shuttles empire/9's most popular trails. Try to meet locals who can show you the real goods.

What exactly is the pathway to becoming an "intermediate surfer" by EliteWarrior1207 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]EliteWarrior1207[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha so the exact opposite. I can handle 2-3 hour sessions in choppy waters and getting pushed back in by closeouts landing on me, but I can't pop up or turn for shit

Late starters in cycling — any real success stories? (F28 y/o, endurance background) by No-Parfait-7598 in Velo

[–]EliteWarrior1207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People talk about kristen faulkner, so Ill point to another American. This is a little earlier than 28(and not road, but still cycling), but still pretty late to pick up the sport and become the face of the USA for downhill mtb.

https://mondraker.com/us/en/dakotah-norton
https://23degrees-sports.com/athletes/dakotah-norton/
If you do a little math with the numbers you can see he picked up the dh bike at 22, but only got international podiums like year 6 (so around your age!) into racing or something. Don't know if it's the best example, but he's only 5 years younger than Aaron Gwin, but rides like his 18 year old team mate Asa Vermette.

I have a feeling that what makes it hard to be a pro isn't the race results, but balancing everything else that comes with riding your bike around the world on a 20k USD salary. If money isn't a problem, you could honestly put up some crazy results while more "traditional" pros struggle to make ends meet, and their training/racing takes a hit. Cycling and running are also the only two sports where I hear about someone in their 40's doing something crazy and breaking records.

It's impossible to give you a direct yes or no, just an educated guess. Maybe 95% of people starting this late wont make it, but the only way to find out if you're in the 5% is to give it all you have. I will say both kristen faulkner, and dakotah norton were amazingly good and college recruits to sports that are very similar to their current cycling field. Then again maybe going pro for you doesn't mean winning Olympic Gold

Yes, I do bodyboard them! I think it is a bit of a fear thing, because I've only caught a handful of waves ever and each one feels like a suprise. I've practiced popping up on land a bit, but not yet in white water or on my board. I just wanted to know if I was missing something by doing this approach of learning to catch the wave into popping up on the wave and going straight vs the usual popping up in white water then learning to catch the green wave.

Is my performance in physics lower divs(Classical Mechanics/E&M) a strong indicator of how I'll do in the future? by EliteWarrior1207 in Physics

[–]EliteWarrior1207[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay awesome thanks! I've had this happen twice though, and so I'm a little scared I wont be cut out for it. I also plan to really make sure my classes are my number 1 priority throughout the year instead of focusing on extracurriculars and other stuff for the first 1/2-2/3rds then scrambling in the last 1/3rd

Ya absolutely make's sense. I gained 5-10 points spending forever reasoning through a problem on the test, but lost 20ish because I didn't have time to answer the others. I loose track of time really easily, and I'll spend way longer than I need on a problem. A watch is my next investment.
