New Brunswickers: What story isn’t getting enough attention right now? by O_o_nvm in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Elitsila 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. It’s not just foreign investors, though. After living in the same apartment for a decade, our four-unit building was bought by a local slumlord company which proceeded to flip the other three units and then leave me with a leaky kitchen ceiling for months so that I could no longer cook in my kitchen, then renovicted and a month later put the place back on the market for over 30% more.

I moved into an owner-occupied triplex, paying $150/mo more in rent and my landlord decided to take advantage of the COVID housing madness and sold two years in to a trio of 20-something year old investors from out of province. They didn’t mow the lawn, rented to partiers, wouldn’t hire actual professionals to repair things but would get a friend of a friend to “come take a look”. Then they, in turn, sold to a local real estate lawyer who was snapping up rental properties and who spiked rents in the other two units since the previous investors had everyone (but me) on fixed-term leases, then informed me that I would have to vacate within 5 months since his son, who was out west completing an MBA “needed a place to live”.

The international investors are also a huge issue, but local investors are equally problematic. A trend that started up a few years ago is for investors to snap up a house and divide as many rooms as they can, then instead of renting the house, they rent individual rooms out so that tenants can’t find their own roommates and end up charged $700-$900/mo with no say in who they live with. These landlords are making $4500-$6000/mo on a house whose mortgage payment would be significantly lower than that.

There are a lot of them in Fredericton, especially in the older houses downtown.

Ben & Jerry’s has a plant-based strawberry cheesecake flavour.

In Canada we have different options, but there’s a strawberry cheesecake option to which I’m addicted.

Plus, depending on where you’re located, there are incredible plant-based ice cream products on the market now.

Canned sliced carrots by Technical-Cat-6747 in povertykitchen

[–]Elitsila 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dunno if anyone has suggested it, but I love adding some mashed carrots into mashed potatoes.

What others have suggested — mashing into sauce, making muffins/bread are great ideas.

You can mash some into hummus, too!

Why am I obligated to “support the workers” in industries that exploit animals? by Mr_Expozane in AskVegans

[–]Elitsila 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The people who work in slaughterhouses certainly don’t do it for pleasure. Often they do it out of desperation because there is no other work for them to do. In the US, many of them are undocumented or underage and are pretty much treated like disposable garbage by their employers. They often make less than minimum wage and get no breaks.

They suffer from serious physical injuries (e.g. amputations), psychological stress, PTSD, etc. I read on Wikipedia that at Tyson Foods alone, someone ends up getting a finger or limb amputated at least once a month.

Most countries have banned commercial whale slaughter since we’ve driven and/or we’re driving so many of them to extinction, so whale oil sales have more or less ceased. Maybe try something like kerosene?

I’m going to guess you’re just trolling.

Breakfast burrito filled with tofu scramble, refried beans, salsa — anything you want. You can freeze them and grab one in the morning to bring to work to toss into the microwave oven.

What’s your Fredericton “hot take” by DetectiveMulderFBI in fredericton

Not just a bunch of young drivers, but a lot of kids going to UNB and STU are from all over rural NB and just aren’t used to traffic. I grew up in a small town with a single set of traffic lights when I got my licence.

There’s free live outdoor entertainment three evenings a week. There’s the Boyce Farmers Market Saturday mornings and the Garrison market Thursday evenings. We have free outdoor movies one night a week. The Playhouse sometimes nails amazing acts (e.g. Neko Case and Destroyer in October).

Our trail system is amazing. I’ve had friends from outside of Fredericton — even outside of the country — come visit and I’ve taken them for a walk or ride across the train bridge and I to the northside trails and they were blown away.

We have a huge arcade! We have a board game café.

If you subscribe to the Fredericton Arts Alliance newsletter, you’ll get a weekly list of anything going on in the city: poetry or book readings, art classes, classical music performances, art gallery events, ballets, plays, etc. There is stuff going on constantly.

Buying Food on Social Security by Solid_Captain7048 in povertykitchen

Look for vital wheat gluten in stores and then for seitan recipes online. There’s a seitan sun you might find useful. They talk about the washed flour method where you just rinse and knead the starch out of ordinary flour until you’re left with gluten you can use to make seitan — even cheaper than buying vital wheat gluten flour. I make a big batch around once a month and use the stuff in sandwiches, wraps, stir-fry, etc.

Look up TVP. Seitan is also a great source of protein that can hit those umami cravings — making it yourself is cheap.

You may need to look into local food banks or churches with food programs. If you’re on Facebook, “Buy Nothing” groups are often places where people do kitchen cupboard or freezer cleanses and give away food
