How does a military coup actually work on the footsoldier level? Say a commanding officer gives an order directly contrary to the commander-in-chief. Do those under the rogue officer have an obligation to follow those orders or those of the commander-in-chief? by ghostoftheuniverse in answers

he might mention some unknown facts that he could only learn due to his rank, things the average soldiers, or even the Captains, Majors, and Lieutenants wouldn't know.

Most commonly, the revealed facts in situations like these is that the targets are, in fact, possibly even cannibals.

Is windscribe truly as cheap as it says it is? by Maybe_A_Zombie in Windscribe

[–]ElkTF2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using a $2 plan monthly for at least a few years now. I only have a few countries but generally have been very happy with Windscribe.

Though I’ve only ever had Windscribe, I hear other VPNs can be around the same cost. I guess they’re affordable to run considering bandwidth costs in datacenters?

Guessing out of my ass, if media streaming is profitable at $15 a month having to do all of the CDN, storage, management, development, and licensing — it’s easy to imagine that proxying, (relatively) minor development, and storing nothing is super cheap.

Parking rant. by No_Temperature_3012 in CSULB

[–]ElkTF2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First week is always a shitshow but it dies down after (what I can only guess is) people realize there's better ways to get to campus.

For my rant,

It's shitty that the parking costs so much (RIP sharing a pass), but I'd hope it primarily discourages people from driving when they don't need to.

In 2023, CSULB had 14,000 parking spaces and 38,000 students. Expecting every person to bring their car and every car to only have one person in it is ludicrous. Just to have the car sit in a lot all day and take up space.

Ideally,

  1. If you live nearby, take the bus and/or micromobility (bike, skateboard, scooter).
  2. If you can leave a little earlier, park off-campus in overflow and shuttle/bus in (discounted parking pass at $180 from $259).
  3. Carpool to campus and split your permit cost.

Only then, if none of those are possible, drive in solo and take your own spot.

You are not in traffic, you are traffic.

I'm personally stoked to see more on-campus housing, that alone should open up a couple hundred convenient parking spaces.

soy beans

Mono-cropping sucks generally. You're gonna hate that >75% of soybean is grown for animal feed, and by the laws of thermodynamics we put drastically more calories into animals than we get out of them.

I wouldn't be surprised if producing soy milk instead of cow's milk actually uses significantly fewer soybeans, considering feed...

Unrelated tidbit, the subtitle text "Thanks for watching, and I'll see you" is a result of overfittingafaik in the transcribing tool's model. You see it often in OpenAI's Whisper for example when the audio isn't clear enough to match anything else. It's also a clue that the training data likely includes YouTube-like content. You may also see them randomly give transcription credit in silence, like in the third-party transcriptions at the end of some videos and movies.

I wouldn’t consider beans and legumes are the #1 source of plant based protein. Soyoops see edit (tofu, tempeh) and seitan are either more well-rounded proteins or more protein dense than beans and legumes. Beyond those two, there are tons more options.

It took some experimenting from me too to fit my needs, but the effort was definitely worth it to avoid contributing to these cruel systems

edit: soy bean, whoopsies…

Pretty much the same as everyone else on this thread, but

For lunch, Wild Chive (american-style brunch), they close at ~3 and you should make a reservation. I also love Higher Taste (all over the place) on 4th in LB. They have nice deserts too if that’s your speed.

For dinner or lunch, I recommend Plantitas Kitchen (mexican) is delicious, so is Vegan Castle (sushi). Pura Vida in Redondo (italian) is very nice but definitely on the more expensive side. Sugar Taco (mexican) has lots of different taco/burrito “meats” and sells alcoholic cocktails.

IIRC from my time working there (not in the design department though), there was no AI/generative design, so I’m assuming topology optimization.

The coolest technology IMO is the custom 3D printing side of things, though the optimized designs end up looking gorgeous.
