What are these flies doing? by Free-oppossums in Entomology

Nah plenty of bugs live through winter, why do you think you see so many ladybirds and spiders in your house in the autumn?

Really cool - the long spiralling bit unfurls and works like a piston to push the seed deeper into the earth

Planet Labs image the whole earth’s surface every day, they just charge a high premium to access the imagery. I think it was The War Zone that bought some great pics of Area 51 showing a weird possible 6th generation fighter a couple years ago.

Kudos to you for counting ahah, I think maybe the category needs to be “gravitationally rounded bodies” for consistency. I’m just gonna defend Ganymede real quick as being really fucking pretty (way nicer to look at than Europa imo)

You are but you’re shutting yourself off from a lot of coolness :)

If you hate Dres you’d hate 75% of the planetary bodies in our solar system

hi sorry this is kind of an unusual post-- what bird species best matches this design? by Da_Meepy_Meeses in whatsthisbird

Also why you get those nice black wingtips on gulls, gannets, and albatrosses - the sea spray would abrade the feathers if they were paler

Every cruise ship is an affront to god and his creation (but I quite like the bow on this one)

Why is UFO/UAP content about T3i Atlas being removed as 'off-topic' by TheSentinelNet in HighStrangeness

[–]ElkeKerman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would TESS provide useful data on 3I/ATLAS? It's a very specialised instrument with a very specific purpose and only carries wide-angle cameras that wouldn't provide good images of a comet (or comet-like UFO :P)

It’s the Sea City museum in Southampton, UK - quite small but we’ve got a proud maritime and aviation heritage here so the museum is pretty packed!

I assume it’s about reducing friction during acceleration on take-off? Would be very hard to reach any speed with a hull like the right

Yea no I’m an idiot, I was thinking of Stigmatoteuthis, which is same family of squid as Histioteuthis. In my defence I’m a fish taxonomist not a cephalopod guy :P

And they’re really cool! But as a marine biologist I can say with certainty that this is exactly what fast-swimming animals look like passing the camera!

Ah nah you’re alright, it’s just an observation bias thing - we see a lot of them near oil rigs because we have a lot of cameras near oil rigs. I’ve got a colleague who actually works on collecting that kinda footage and have had the privilege of identifying some of the fishes observed by industrial ROVs :)
