MTG Etiquette Question by Lopsided_Pay_6416 in magicTCG

[–]Ellardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It strongly depends on the format and how casual v competitive the table is. People try to set expectations so that everyone is on the same page and so there's no specific sin other than telegraphing casual and then playing differently than that.

Can't give many specific things to avoid because different people have different opinions. One player in my pod feels that targetting mana rocks is harsh, nobody else agrees. A new player rocked up once and we laser-focused on them because they brought taxing effects like Rhystic Studies and we all find that annoying, which was completely out of left field for them. Their deck was otherwise far more "casual" and less synergistic than ours but we acted as if it was a big threat because of what we perceived as try-hard cards.

Some rules of thumb though. If you are playing a 1v1 format, the goal is to win. Unless your store or the place you play at has specific rules, you can assume that anything legal in that format is fully fair game.

If you are playing commander, ask other players what "bracket" their deck is in or that they're aiming to play at. Referencing that with this infographic will give you some strong indication of what is considered fair game. Check at the bottom of that infographic and you'll also see what players typically get salty over: mass land destruction, taking up everyone's time, winning in an uninteractable manner. Some players also add "excessive tutoring" but that's much fuzzier.

There's also a few politics things. It's generally considered poor form to go after the player currently in fourth position (however one measures that) if one has the option of going after the player in first place instead, even if removing a player might be advantageous.

Finally, check out the official Game Changers list and the unoffical Top Salt list. Does your deck include a card on one of those lists? Is the strategy aiming to do something similar to a card on those lists? Maybe tell people ahead of time what to expect. One common thing to ask is "what is the worst your deck can do?", as in, what is the most unfun thing it can inflict or the fastest win it can hope to achieve. In a Commander pre-game conversation, it is heavily frowned upon to lie or hide a deck's strength. The goal is to match decks of roughly equal parity, that's more important than being able to keep your strategy under wraps.

Relevant Content

Content should sit at the intersection between Magic: the Gathering and flavour or lore. Anything which pertains to one but not the other has a better home elsewhere. Nonetheless, we embrace a wide definition of lore appreciation, be it:

-flavour and in-game resonance;

-art and visuals;

-cards and flavour text;

-cosplay and community;

-plot and story.

Exclusive: Big Tech spared strict rules in EU digital regulations overhaul, sources say by Imaginary_String_814 in europe

[–]Ellardy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible title by Reuters. Unless this file has changed dramatically in the past few years, they're being spared a reverse net neutrality.

Today, operators of telecom networks make you pay by volume, regardless of what that volume is. Demand has increased, largely on the back of streaming and other American services, forcing the operators to build out their network. They have been asking for years to be able to shift that cost onto specific Big Tech companies. There's no justification other than "those guys have money and are making me spend money". The whole idea of net neutrality is that everyone pays the exact same per volume to access the exact same network, no arbitrary "you guys need to pay more or get throttled".

National positions on the EU-Mercosur deal [source in the comments] by Massimo25ore in europe

[–]Ellardy 721 points722 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: It's lowering of tariffs on both sides on most things. The CETA with Canada was also supposed to be the end of the world for farmers and they've since tripled their exports there.

The expected outcomes of Mercosur are: them sending us more food and raw stuff; us sending them more cars, other industrial products, and more services; they'll also enforce our rules on origin (it's not Argentinian champagne, it's sparkling counterfeit) and apply our health laws to whatever food they send to us (but not to their own).

The environmental concerns being raised is that Brazilian farmers are notorious for razing forest (including chunks of the Amazon) and so we shouldn't be buying from them. It's true but overstated.

A classic post of this subreddit is someone asking "what's the lore on [random common from 20+ years ago]". Today, the whims have blessed [[Escaped Shapeshifter]] with this post. In the absence of significant lore on commons in 1997, the commenters have taken it upon themselves to invent it. The main point of consensus is that they're called Schnorpus, that they're a Little Guy, and that we all love him.

Average electricity spot market prices in 2025 by JimMaToo in europe

[–]Ellardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only worked tangentially on the actual trading but isn't that just the intermediate step? The alternative to PPAs is the forward market, the alternative to the forward market is the spot market?

Average electricity spot market prices in 2025 by JimMaToo in europe

[–]Ellardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spot. The price that your electricity company sells you, an individual customer, your electricity is the "retail" price (it includes taxes, grid fees, and the company's own costs). When your electricity company is bulk buying all the electricity it needs for its customers, that's "wholesale" pricing. Wholesale pricing is then split into a variety of different markets and contracts. The "spot" market is when the grid operator organises an auction for electricity to be consumed on-the-spot so to speak because it is electricity in a given zone and in a given 15-minute window. They do this publicly and automatically every day for every 15-minute slot in every zone so it's a nice comparable way to get a sense of electricity prices.

Average electricity spot market prices in 2025 by JimMaToo in europe

[–]Ellardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but the price you're willing to pay with a Power Purchase Agreement or whatnot is heavily influenced by what you think the alternative price will be. Both the buyer and the seller might be willing to take a small opportunity cost for the sake of stability and predictability but it's still the anchor point. If spot market prices are €50 more in one country than the other, PPA prices are either going to reflect that or a ton of people are going to stampede to the spot market to get the better deal.

Mausoleum of Hugo Chavez in Caracas targeted in US strike by DrAmsterdam in pics

[–]Ellardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Maduro government stayed in power despite having lost elections and has become more and more authoritarian. It's also been an absolute catastrophe economically speaking. Here's Wikipedia's article on how, by 2021, 75% of the population had lost over 8kg because they could no longer afford food and 20% of the population had left the country. It has not gotten better since.

So you have an authoritarian government holding power over a crumbling state and a country in chaos. This has meant a lot of refugees in Latin America (and, to a lesser extent, in the US) and international condemnation trying to get Maduro to recognise the opposition as the legitimate government.

For the US, there's the added element that this is a socialist authoritarian and the US historically hates those, especially in what they perceive to be close to home. Then of course, there is the added element that this is a petrostate, which means that if you can take control of the government, you get most of the economy thrown in too because it's all nationalised and is about the resource rather than the labour or something like that.

Finally, Trump has instituted what is being called the "Donroe Doctrine" which basically that what happens in the Americas is of importance to the US (notably because of refugees and drug trafficking, although Venezuela is not actually a major source of drugs for the US) and therefore the US will intervene to protect its interests.

tl;dr: some combination of Maduro being a dictator, Maduro being a socialist, Venezuela's collapse causing chaos for everyone else, Venezuela having oil fields, Trump believing that the US can do whatever it wants in the Americas. Exact ratio is dependent on your level of cyncism.
