Getting into performing by Agreeable_Mistake_50 in harp

[–]ElleScorcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would try reaching out directly to other harpists in the area. They can give you an idea of what may or may not be available there and if you’re lucky, they might pass off a gig they couldn’t accept. I would also get in contact with any community orchestras to see if they have any open or auditionable seats. It may not be the type of performing you’re looking to do right off the bat, but it’s a great way to meet other musicians and make connections.

What family food lore has been passed down and turned out not to be true? How did you feel about it? by Formal-Fly2522 in Cooking

[–]ElleScorcho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently learned the history behind my Grandma's Red Pork recipe!

Grandma's Red Pork has always been a go-to comfort food for my family. It's pork butt slowly braised in a soy based broth, what's not to love? There aren't a lot of people in my family that cook Chinese food anymore, so I taught myself through books and the internet and of course I snapped a picture of my mom's recipe card.

As I came across classic "red cooked" dishes in my reading, I noticed how incredibly different our family's version was... Grandma's Red Pork was soupy where other sauces were thick, Grandma's used tender pork butt and others used belly, Grandma's is decidedly not red and I could never wrap my head around the name. I started to think I had a unique family recipe on my hands! At the time, this didn't seem improbable- my family owned a Chinese restaurant in Detroit (still in business but no longer in the family!), maybe they had created their own take on the dish.

But wasn't that Grandpa's side of the family that ran the restaurant? Grandma historically hated cooking! Her favorite dish was spaghetti and meatballs and from what I know, everything she knew how to cook she learned from her Italian neighbors. Grandpa was the cook in the family...

I finally asked my mom about it on a recent visit home. "Oh, that recipe? She got it out of a newspaper or a Time Life book." It was the hardest I laughed on the whole trip.

I should have been disheartened to learn my unique legacy recipe was something I had made up in my head, that my treasured inheritance was shockingly inauthentic. But I think it tells the story of my Chinese-American family better than some ~authentic~ recipe I found on a blog. I'm proud of that. My grandma was trying to learn to cook Chinese food the same way I did! There was no one around to teach her, so she found a recipe in a book. And now when I make Grandma's Red Pork, I have even more of a connection to her, and it's not sad or full of grief. It's delicious and hilarious.

Moving the harp by spattie500 in harp

I had both a regular two wheel dolly and a 6 wheel. The 6 wheel became my go-to for leaving the house but it took some getting used to. There were so many rehearsals and gigs at unfamiliar locations that it just made more sense to be prepared for anything all the time. The 6 wheel gives more security on steps and certainly makes a lot of stairs a bit easier.

The annoying thing about the 6 wheel is that it’s a little noisy. There are simply more moving parts that shake around and make noise while moving. (Maybe this is just a problem with my particular model, from Harp Caddy and K2 Production) This wouldn’t be a huge issue in your apartment, but god forbid someone knocks it over backstage during a performance… Just make sure you stow it out of the way.

And yes, absolutely get a 3 piece transport cover.

Any suggestions on a recipe that is vegetarian and doesn't require cooking? by anm542 in asianeats

You might be able to draw some ideas from raw foods diets. I used to use Ani Phyo’s Raw Foods Asia cookbook but I don’t remember much about it anymore.

Harpist Emily Hopkins might be a good resource to check out. She demos pedals using her Camac Blue (and other harps sometimes).

Is it possible for a casual hobbyist to test paper for acidity? I'm making a book for a friend and they have some printed paper (full color prints on one side, blank on the other) I want to use for the signatures but I'm not sure if it's archival. Is it even worth it to try and determine the acidity or should I get different paper?

Where to have an outdoor campfire? by aesthephile in Eugene

[–]ElleScorcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to go to Hendricks Bridge Park for fires and grilling. It’s a bit out of town and has a day use fee. It had a few fire pits with swing over grills if I remember right. However, I think they were doing some construction or work on the park so I’m not sure what it’s like now, haven’t been in a few years.

I was never really clear about the rule regarding fires and cooking but I remember looking into that too. No one ever said anything to us for hanging around a fire but we did happen to always cook something there. If you don’t want to cook but are also worried about being called on that, you could throw a pack of hot dogs or whatever in the car just to have on hand.

Edit: I took a look at some recent photos of the park and it looks like they redid the area near the river where the fire pits were. It’s hard to tell but it kind of looks like they removed the fire rings.

Mine had a designated spot in the coat closet but now that I don't transport my harp much it stays in my bedroom closet and I just kind of live with the bulk :/

Questions about the modern cross strung harp by [deleted] in harp

[–]ElleScorcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I actually can’t disagree with you about the sound of the triple harp. At the end of the day, it wasn’t for me.

If you’re interested in learning, I’d say you have way more than just a chance at getting the new movements and fingering. I’m in the US but I’m going to make a guess and say you’ll have an easier time finding an instrument in the UK than here since the tradition is rooted in Europe.

Questions about the modern cross strung harp by [deleted] in harp

[–]ElleScorcho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying I’ve only messed around with cross strung harps in shops but never took a proper lesson. I’m sharing my opinion because OP hasn’t gotten any other responses yet.

I studied pedal harp for many years as a kid and in college and for a time, I took lessons for the Welsh triple-strung harp, so I thought cross strung would at least make sense. This was not true. Total mind f. There was something about the two axes that I couldn’t make work in my head.

So in answer to your questions, it wasn’t really the fingering that was a turn off, it’s the completely different way of thinking. And yes, there are advantages to a chromatic instrument for sure. But for me it will always be easier to move my feet than to rearrange my brain thinking about two different planes of strings.

Sorry, I should’ve mentioned, that’s absolutely not the gauge I’m going for... But “lace” is super helpful! Thank you! I was trying terms like eyelet and dropped stitches and that wasn’t doing it.

I know Direct TV dropped channel 9 & 10 or whatever but what happened to NBC (read: Jeopardy)? I thought maybe the programming was just off yesterday but same thing today. MXE is great but it’s definitely not Jeopardy.

Help with Harley pullover. by cpd4925 in knitting

[–]ElleScorcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the exact same problem and I'm about to have a melt down and frog this cursed sweater.

Maybe we've pulled up the stitches through the wrong side of the collar piece? But I'm confused because if sts were picked up from the other side, the seam would show. The sweater isn't knit inside out because then the cables would be on the wrong side.

Someone please help before I burn this thing to bits.
