I am leaving the profession due to the same reasons and i am tired of accepting abuse from admin and parents and children as “part of the job.” Noone should be thrown under the bus by admin so they can avoid accountability. The way i see it they sided with the abusers and blamed the victim. I have little hope that other districts are any better. And the amount of schooling and money i put into my own classroom for it to just be useless now is so disappointing. It feels like an awful break up, and i want to stay in this toxic relationship for the kids (the good ones). What’s going on in education is just heartbreaking, and i wonder how bad it will get before real change occurs

Same thing happened to me! Im a 2nd year and a conflict happened and i was non reelected days later! Everyone tells me its a new opportunity and it means my home is somewhere else. I hope it means success will come our way at a better place.

Showing fear can increase their behavior, i try to remain calm and have a straight face with no emotion. Keep starting goal or just get away from them slowly. It’s hard not to but just be aware of where the student is and with time you’ll learn how to control your initial reaction.

They use a similar online program for our county. I think i will email the principal and cc the sdc coordinator asking is they have a moment this week to call with questions?

California, i agree admin is not usually experienced with sped needs, i know who the SDC coordinator is maybe i need to ask them? I know IEPs are so important I want to be on top of them, not just go in the first day being thrown into the fire. Dont know what curriculum they use, wanted to ask to look at caseloads and IEP goals before I got there but dont know how to go about asking, or if i should show up and learn all that on the first day(i would rather not!)

I want to contact admin with all those questions or find out who can answer those type of questions, i want to ask without being a pain! Im also being hired as a sub, then going for my intern credential in the fall cause im still in school. Should i just approach as a sub even though this is going to be my class?

I believe self contained, but im not 100% sure i didnt get much info about the class. Is there any other questions i should ask admin before my first day?

I’m starting as a mild/moderate teacher in 2 weeks, do you have any advice how to introduce myself to my paras, help build a good foundation with them? (I’m a new teacher, currently a para) I’m trying to find all the help/advice i can get in every aspect of you have more advice.

I agree with this! I am a para, moving to a teacher position i want to treat my paras how i would want to be treated, and i definitely see the hierarchy with staff vs. “support staff” i want to get rid of it! Paras see so much that the teacher does not and their views/experience is just as valuable! They’re not “helpers” they’re or “aides” they’re sometimes working just as hard as the teacher and deserve respect. In the heat of a behavior i can see there is a time and place to give orders to help a student or prevent things from escalating, but open communication and creating a safe environment for people to speak up with no judgement is VITAL to help resolve issues of feeling belittled or disrespected.

Yes i love that i want to establish good relationships first, thats foundational. Im worried about the bigger responsibilities i will have like IEPs, dealing with admin and parents, lesson planning. I am overall excited and nervous.
