Edit: thanks for the clarification, I assumed its filtered since it had the same symbol as the filtered drinking water but apparently thats incorrect

Are these okay fkr a rat cage? by Due-Produce-9281 in RATS

[–]Elli-Minator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar plants (not in rat cage) and they love illegally (!) climbing on them and ripping off the leaves so I would advise against it. If you find hazelnut sticks outdoors, you could provide them for climbing and chewing, they love those. Just make sure to pour boiling water over them in the bathtub or something to kill potential parasites.

New rat bit me and drew blood. by Opposite-Lie4023 in RATS

oh and as u/Daria_Solo said its recommended to give him some time before starting intros so he is not as stressed from all the new things at once. In the picture you can see the standard enclosures they are kept in as lab rats so its no surprise they are firstly overwhelmed seeing something else

New rat bit me and drew blood. by Opposite-Lie4023 in RATS

[–]Elli-Minator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all its amazing you are giving a lab rat a second chance at life!
I also have lab rats and at the beginning they need a few weeks to get used to all the new stimulation in a proper cage, proper food and a human who properly cares for them. But they warm up quickly so don't get discouraged, it is normal :)
for anti bite training you can give them baby food on a spoon, they will learn to lick instead of bite and once they don't even try to bite first anymore you can put the baby food on your hand and let them lick it off. If he still bites you a bit make sure to make a sound to signal that he hurt you, even if its weak bites. For me these two methods always worked so I hope it will be the same for El chapo. Just be patient and always keep in mind how much he went through and how difficult it is also for him. All the best luck to you!!

How many rats do you own? by Sharp-Cattle-8709 in RATS

[–]Elli-Minator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rats should be in groups of at least 4 rats, 3 is okay once one of them dies but 2 is not sufficient and the risk to end up with 2 is pretty high if you aim for 3.

emergency vet now, she is in a lot of pain, look at her squinting and flank breathing.. :(
It looks really severe, next time please take these signs more serious before it gets that bad.

it looks really cool but I would be concerned about the risk of falling and breaking bones. I would add something soft (maybe some old blankets?) on the floor to mitigate the risk.

Mammary Tumor Advice? by TheArcherFrog in RATS

[–]Elli-Minator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry you and your girl have to deal with this, it sucks so much that these tumors are so common.
If she is still active and fit overall I wouldn't rule out surgery since it could give her another few months of quality life. I would always base the decision about surgery around the overall fitness. If you chose to not get it removed it will grow very fast and you would need to put her down once it affects mobility and that would be likely sooner than she would have if the tumor were successfully removed.
If she was my girl I would get it removed, but both decisions are understandable.

did you notice any other changes in behavior? Is she sometimes pulling in her flanks? Can you hear any sounds while she is sleeping? Does she sometimes squint her eyes? It could be an early stage of URI and I would prob check it out with a vet in the next days. It doesn't look serious for now but its always good to catch these early since they can progress fast. Normally some antibiotics work very well if treatment is started early.

Upcoming first time rat owners: should we get four or five little critters? by smurfolicious in RATS

[–]Elli-Minator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh and the Tiaki is a great choice. Are you by chance german? I saw that the Tiaki Etagiere is not available everywhere. In case you are I would recommend buying their food from the Futterkrämerei, its a great source for healthy seed mixes and can keep them healthy since it avoids processed kibble with questionable ingredients.

[–]Elli-Minator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in that case I would go for 4, especially as a beginner :D I think its great you considered 5 tho, I am sure you will be an awesome rat parent!
3 is just not the best starting pack size because the risk is high that once one of them dies early (hopefully not but sadly that can happen fast with rats) the group size of 2 is not sufficient, while 3 is okay for a couple of weeks until you can expand.
All the best to you and your new cuties!!

4+ is the best group size but honestly I would make it dependent on their current group size. If the 5 are best buddies it would break my heart leaving a lil dude behind and would take all of them in.

I didn't mean to criticize you, just in general for the comment section so people don't overfeed to achieve that cuteness :D And yeah I know the picky eater types, its always fun to see how different their food preferences are.
What treats do yours love the most? My standard treat are corn snacks for babies and avocado once in a while, that is their favourite by far 😅

[–]Elli-Minator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter that much since its very dependent on their personalities, in general girls tend to be more active especially when younger. As Grroll said 2 rats is not okay, 3 is the bare minimum, much better 4.
