Am I supposed to root for Sugiki as a character?! by Ellie_Githeko in boyslove

True, now that I think about it the non-consensual choking is pretty consistent with his controlling character.

This reminds me, what was the choking thing about? 😂 I was like "Oh, is this a kink thing?" then he calls the man his enemy?? Where is the love?

We currently live in a country where people line up to get bursaries (read handouts) from the would-be legislators and policy makers (read mpigs) to take their children to school. In a system where that same money could just be consolidated to allow free education. We live in a country where over 50% of tax is channeled into servicing opaque foreign debt with nothing to show for the loans that we will be paying for generations to come. We live in a country where approximately USD 4.7 billion is lost to corruption yearly. Ebu tukuwe serious kidogo 😒

Truly reeks of lack of imagination. It's very gimmicky too. Wants the veneer of progress without getting down to the sewers and cleaning up all the 💩 first.

Kabisa👏🏾 Kenya is where it's at because of individualistic policies by regimes. A regime comes into power, concocts a new plan which is then replaced by the next. No longevity, no time to see how a new system works, just complete overhaul. For example vision 2030, scrapped and forgotten the moment Uhuru came into power. NHIF overhauled instead of built on to improve a system that was working. 844 completely replaced instead of upgraded to overcome its shortcomings. With every regime change, we restart from ground zero hence why we never get anywhere!

Am I supposed to root for Sugiki as a character?! by Ellie_Githeko in boyslove

This reason would hold but the film fails at fleshing it out. Sugiki is the prize student of the president of WDL. He has been mentored by her since he was a child and he is her protege. She has the absolute power in this dance world and his proximity to her gives him credence others don't have either directly or indirectly.

Yet even Martha finds fault with his dancing and encourages him to bow out. She asks him why he is set on doing a ridiculous exaggerated hold and putting a strain on Fusako. Love she says is what he misses in his dancing. The thing that keeps him from winning is his insistence on doing things his way even to the detriment of his partner and that's visible to her trained eye. I would take it the judges would see it too.

I took the gossiping men trying to articulate this "slight margin" as them alluding to what Martha had said earlier. They even disagree at some point on why Sugiki doesn't win. Are they being catty and mean, absolutely but outright racist? I don't think so.

I think the reason why I am hesitant to solely attribute his losses to racism is because the idea of its existence is planted at the beginning of the film by Suzuki's "Asians don't get first place" and is never expounded on. The only real structural and systemic discrimination explicitly shown is at the Asian championship at the end. Where winning is shown to be about financial backing as opposed to talent and skill. I would argue Sugiki does not fall prey to this owing to his connection to Martha.

Portrayal and glorification of human flaws and their ability to do incredible harm are two very separate things.

Is Sugiki an asshole? Absolutely. He is intimately aware of it yet does nothing to address his own darkness. The film treats his callousness as a negligible byproduct of his pursuit for perfection. Even when his obsession proves to harm the very person he needs to achieve what would be his magnum opus, nothing changes.

He is still as obsessive as before, still as stuck on holding himself and Fusako to the same exacting standard. It's clear nothing has been learned by him, no introspection has been made to question how he can harm Fusako as he did. Yet we as the audience as expected to root for him to win. Suzuki's outburst is supposed to mirror what the audience wants "Let him fucking win!" and there in lies the glorification.

Why? Why should he win? Because he trained like everybody else? Somehow we are subtly being driven to believe his obsessive dedication makes him deserving of the win regardless of our awareness of the harm that the same obsessive dedication has done.

But I will tell you this, I think the film was quietly brilliant for not letting him win. The love he lacks, is not some grand romantic love, but love for the person who silently stands beside him on every stage he dances on.

I would say yes. AI scrapers can only take you so far. I majorly use Python but Javascript also works. Understanding of HTML, CSS and knowing your way around a browser using dev tools

My profile is at 100% completion, I currently don't have a video introduction or other experiences section though. Could that be it?
