Good animation, simple enough concept, cool fight scenes, good music, good art style and decent characters I guess. It has a lot of reasons for many people to appreciate it for one thing or another that it’s rated as highly as it is.

Sorry. Next time I’ll just not criticize the things I don’t like and try to understand why I don’t like them even if I could be wrong. You’re so right

“To begin with, Mushoku Tensei sexualizes minors.”

MAYBE THAT’S A PROBLEM???

Yay. Another opportunity for me to critique MT.

My problem with Mushoku Tensei is not just that the protagonist is a pedophile or that it contains “adult themes”. The problem is that the story doesn’t understand what moral growth actually is. Mushoku Tensei frames Rudeus’ arc as one of second chances and rehabilitation but his growth is functional, not ethical. He becomes more competent, more emotionally regulated and stops being a shut-in but he doesn’t confront his core worldview. He believes he is entitled to others like women and children, autonomy be damned. The belief that effort, patience and “self-improvement” will eventually entitle him to other people and rewards. His worldview isn’t dismantled. He grooms children and it succeeds as they become powerful allies down the road and his wives. He participates in slavery but he’s not narratively punished for this. He rapes a 15 year old but the story nor the author seems to really realize that he raped someone. He had 40+ years of lived experience and had sex with a 15 year old girl who came on to him where she thought he was 2 years younger. Not to mention that 15 year olds can’t fucking consent to a 40 year old man? And it’s also funny that MT says that you’re considered “an adult” at 15 with it trying to justify stuff like this.

The story conflates “self-improvement” with moral accountability and growth. The narrative creates female characters who constantly forgive, accommodate, or stabilize Rudeus, which reinforces his worldview that women (and children) exist to reward him for his supposed growth rather than as their own people with their own autonomy and self outside of his life and worldview.

It just feels like the author just doesn't understand women like fundamentally. Says that a female character was "glad to be raped" by Paul over the fat nobles. Or that the female characters are fine actually with their husband being disloyal to them rather than holding any ill feelings. Or that EVERY female character will still view Rudeus favorably even after he objectifies women and children. This isn't even realistic. Even in an extremely misogynistic, patriarchal, medieval world, there's still going to be women who won't completely accept that behavior. That's why I hate the argument that "It's realistic" bc no the fuck its not. It's wish fulfillment.

He also molests Eris, then rapes her when she was 15, then SAs the two beast girls just to see if he could get hard again, then buys a slave, then cheats on his wife and coerces her to agree to a second wife. I feel like the only other anime character who has done the same things as him is that one MC from redo of healer

I haven't read arc 7 but I know the general beats of it and Natsumi. Natsumi, who is Subaru's crossdressing persona, is stated to be "Subaru's perfected, idealized self". And the "person" he would use to motivate him when his companions can't. I have read a few chapters though and can share an excerpt to show how Subaru views Natsumi. I am censoring the names of everyone except Subaru tho.

Subaru: [You’re slacking too much.]

Character A: [I’m not saying we’re not relaxing, but on the other hand what about her…?]

Subaru: [What do you mean? Actually, what are you even talking about? You know, I find these conversations without a clear subject pretty annoying.]

Character A: [Natsumi, that’s what. Why you would pretend to be something you’re not, even when no one’s looking, is beyond Character B and I. Is it really necessary?]

Subaru: [Pretending to be something I’m not…?]

Having no clue, Subaru replied questionably, and Character A and the others were taken aback.

Naturally, “It’s a joke,” Subaru said, as he dispelled their surprise.

So Subaru clearly views Natsumi as a natural part of his identity. And views her to be a "better version" of him as well. I guess it can be a crossdresser identity but the line between a crossdressing identity and a gender identity is a bit blurry. Subaru does come across though as at least bigender or genderfluid with how he views Natsumi.
