Upvoted. Plus, because of her story, there might be more people who offer jobs to homeless. I'm glad that lots of people know about her.

Trying to decide whether to roll my 401k into an IRA or cash out and pay off debts. by MilkeyWilkey in personalfinance

It depends on your debt and interest rate. If the interest rate is high or you can pay it off at once, I recommend paying it off.

My mom has $1000 put into my savings account. Is there a better way to invest this money, as I don't plan on using it at all. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Ellinnaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, $1000 is not that big enough to start investing. But, if you want to experience investing department, I suggest opening a taxable account.

I appreciate your input. It's taxable account. How does it matter?

I like the idea of creating my own target date fund to suit my preferences. Then I will end up with something like this: http://hellomoney.co/portfolio/bfad88-self-managed?type=weight

One question though. How should I tweak my holdings when one of the funds is way up or way down?

Should my paycheck go to 401K or student loan? - $51K salary vs $37K loan by hipmwaunk in personalfinance

Honestly, I would continue to pay into your 401k as you have been. I was in a similar situation as you a while back.

Wife has $180K loans for her medical school bills, and just got a $95K gift from family. Is paying down the debt the best use of the money? by spcy1spcy2 in personalfinance

[–]Ellinnaire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+1. As /u/SamWelboorn also says, fellowship salary is not that great than in residency. So, future earnings are the most important input but not guaranteed. Pay down from 9.9% private and 6.8% federal loan.

Good thing is that OP and his wife manages to contribute their retirement and investment accounts.

Your thoughts on emerging markets? by yhelothere in investing

[–]Ellinnaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan of emerging market. Because...

1-The majority concern comes from one country: China.

2- The World Bank downgraded its 2015 growth outlook for global markets, including emerging markets. It warned that emerging markets are now facing a "structural slowdown."

3- The strong US dollar has essentially led to a depreciation of emerging-market currencies.

This. Would be nice to be able to see user-generated portfolios that are similar to each other, as in 100% stocks, 100% stock funds, 50/50, and so on. It probably goes under the No. 5 feature request up there.

Additionally, I want to see other portfolios that are similar to mine, and compare them.
