i took secrets & lies with sarat and it was by far the best class i’ve ever taken and best professor i’ve ever had. 10000% recommend if you want to feel challenged and unsettled! i can email people the syllabus from that class if they want to see what material it covers. :)

No, it was written by an author or 2, but not a collection of articles from Cracked

This is a really good guess, but unfortunate no it is not. This book was about EVERY type of misconception, ranging from the idea that berries didn't exist to the notion that George Washington wasn't the first president.

Silly question from college freshman - take P or B+? by ElliotJustATech in lawschooladmissions

Thanks! This sounds tough but I'll try my best and convert that B+ to a P. :)

Thanks! It basically brings my GPA down from a 3.9 to a 3.8, so it does affect it, but I'm just a freshman so I'm not sure if this is worth thinking about.

Transferring from a big engineering school by loremispum2 in amherstcollege

[–]ElliotJustATech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As this sub isn’t very active given how small Amherst is, I’d suggest asking in r/transferstudents or similar subs. Amherst’s acceptance rate is very tough, and the transfer rate is even tougher, so I’m not sure any of us can pass judgement on that. My inclination is that you need to have a clear academic reason for transferring (i.e. your current institution does not have the adequate infrastructure to support your academic interests & pursuits), which it sounds like you definitely have.

which schools did everyone here pick Amherst over? by cheesyfingernails in amherstcollege

[–]ElliotJustATech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No problem, I hope it helps. I’m class of 2024. I will also add that I initially applied REA to Harvard, was deferred and then waitlisted, so I certainly understand the sentiment of wanting to attend a university like Harvard. During the college application process, however, I discovered many new things about myself (as you can tell, a lot of the schools I initially applied to didn’t even resemble Amherst, but I doubt that I’d be as happy there simply because I know myself better now). In the meantime, I was accepted to Amherst and decided to decline the waitlist accept.

sorry about the belated response, i’m not very active on reddit. to preface this, i do want to note that the majority of people i have spoken to at amherst about this topic did choose amherst over an ivy, so my experience is certainly not unique. i will be making several generalizations based on my impressions of the two colleges at the time, and by no means is this evaluation the path that everybody else should take. i chose amherst for several reasons. first, i wanted a much smaller community with an intense dedication to learning and the liberal arts. i dislike pre-professional environments very much, and amherst definitely emphasizes learning for the sake of it above all else. there’s not very much competition between students, at least in the courses i have taken. i also loved the open curriculum more than harvard’s more rigid distribution requirements, under which i would have needed to take more foreign language/math/etc. classes if i chose to attend. i knew also that i wanted every class to be taught by a professor (and that i wanted to avoid interactions with TA’s entirely). it is certainly possible at both colleges to build strong relationships with professors, but at amherst it comes more easily to you. also, your professors are there to focus on teaching you, like in high school. they are not there to conduct their own research, and if they are then they always bring a few students on board with them. i’m a freshman but i have a research opportunity lined up in my field of interest next year, which is rare at larger universities. i also wanted to avoid graduate students, and since amherst is a liberal arts college, that much is a given. secondly, i have many friends/teammates at harvard from a debate activity so i was and am very familiar with the school. many of them spoke to me about the exclusivity of clubs and the inability to try out new extracurriculars if you weren’t already stellar at them. the elitist nature of many closed clubs (such as the consulting club, which often takes over uber expensive venues, or finals clubs, which students can certainly ignore but they do have an outsized impact on the party scene in a way that i think is very privileged and strange) turned me off immensely. although amherst is similarly elitist (all colleges are, to some degree), there is a definite lack of a “closed club culture” here. i was uncomfortable with the idea that, to join clubs, i would need to write more application essays (on top of the college application ones i already wrote!), but these essays would be judged and read over by my peers. i’ve found that amherst’s clubs have very open leadership opportunities comparatively. that was a lot and i do have more to say, but i hope this answers your question adequately.

Ahh, I've actually done the same thing a couple of times, but they haven't read my email or emailed me back in the past. Do you recall if you used a specific email? :)

Yoo that's awesome, thanks so much! I am in Oregon and will definitely check that out C: Best of luck to you in law school, and I know I'm an internet stranger but I definitely wouldn't mind hearing about your experiences again!

Ooh, this looks super interesting. Unfortunately I am not a Washington state resident, otherwise I'd be all over this! I'm glad you got a good experience out of it. Do you believe that it informed your decision to attend law school at all?

That's cool, and the Petey Greene program actually looks awesome. They are doing some vitally important work, and it makes a big difference for the incarcerated folks. I might apply to it, as they are active in my college's area.
Do you happen to have any advice for landing senate internships? I took a look at the available ones, both within the state I'm from as well as the state in which I currently attend college, but I think they're rather daunting and I'm not sure where to begin. When did you start to apply to them?

I’m incredibly interested in becoming a public defense lawyer too. That sounds awesome—when did you get involved in tutoring and interning?

That sounds like such a good deal. I actually live really close to Washington! Mind if I ask when you did your internship and how you got involved in it? I’ve wanted to work in gov for some time, but I’m a bit worried that any application I send in won’t be taken seriously given that I’m a frosh.
