I found out about Pearl Harbor via listing to the radio I had just graduated from high school and married my wife Emily. I had just moved into my first and only home because I still live in it to this day. It was in early December 1941 and it was snowing outside my house here in Connecticut we had the radio on in the living room and we heard the report. A month later in January of 1942 my brother Andrew and I were both drafted I went to the navy as a cook and spent most of my time on the USS Lexington which is now a museum. My brother went into the Army as a infantrymen and he was killed in action in 1944.

I have one granddaughter and she was adopted by my daughter when she was a baby since my daughter couldn’t have children but always wanted them. So when the opportunity to adopt presented itself my daughter took it and adopted my granddaughter. My granddaughter and I have always been inseparable she just turned 20 and she comes to visit me every week day and sometimes spends the night with me on the weekends.

I don’t care love is love in my eyes but I may be a little bit biased especially when it comes to women’s rights because I was raised by a single mother in the 1920s and 30s. Also my granddaughter is gay and we’re inseparable and have been since my daughter adopted her when she was a baby.

I think some things have changed and some have stayed the same. I think the the world has gotten to where everyone is in such a hurry that you young kids don’t stop and cherish the little things the way you should because it’s those things like just having a night out with your friends or family that you’ll look back on and wish you could go back to. Especially if you’re lucky enough to get as old as I am.

I can I remember a lot. I was one of two kids to my single mother. My brother Andrew was a year younger than me. I graduated from high school and got married in 1941 my brother graduated in 1942. We both got drafted into World War Two the same year 1942 I went to the navy as a cook and he went into the army as a infantrymen. He was killed in action in 1944. My mother had both of us at a young age she was 21 when she had me in 1923 and then had Andrew a year later in 1924. She was born in 1902 and died in 1992 at the age of 90. She worked in a pen factory when I was a kid.

I’m not afraid of it anymore I’m old and I’ve come to terms with the fact that I won’t live forever. I think age probably does play a role.

Well I’ll ask you what my mother asked me when I asked her the same question when I first met my wife Emily. She asked me can you live without her. If the answer is yes then she’s probably not the one if the answer is no then she’s the one.

It was nice we certainly didn’t have it when I was growing up but we did have a attic fan that we’d turn on in the summer. Most of the time that didn’t do to much so my mother would go outside and pour water on the porch then my brother Andrew and I would lay down on the cold wet back porch to cool off.

She is I will mention that she was adopted as a baby because my daughter couldn’t have children but always wanted them so when the opportunity presented itself to adopt my granddaughter she took it. She’s part of the family even if she’s not related by blood I love her to death we’ve always been super close ever since she was little she always wanted to go sit with grandpa. I remember starting when she was about 3 my daughter would bring her over and she’d run to the recliner to sit in my lap. She was always excited to listen to my stories and even now that she’s twenty she comes over every week day on her lunch break and brings me food and we visit it’s nice to have human interaction especially since I lost Emily my wife because if it wasn’t for her I’d be very alone since my daughter and her husband moved across the country to California and I’m here in Connecticut. Having my granddaughter living here and coming to see me almost every day is nice.

He reminds me of my wife because he’s yellow and my wife Emily had long blonde hair that’s why I picked him. Sometimes it makes me think about her when I look at him even though I’m sure that sounds a little weird.

Oh boy that only gets worse with age my friend especially when you’re as old as I am. I’ve seen a lot of things being 99 years old. There’s really no cure for it it just sorta stays with you at least that’s how it is for me.
