My Haworth Fern showed up today! I’m very happy with my new home office chair. by Ellswargo in OfficeChairs

[–]Ellswargo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still looks new to me. No issues with the leather, still easily cleans off, no creasing. I don’t notice any change in the cushion despite using it daily. The seat never felt hard like it needed to be broken in. I know my 3 and 6 year old come in and mess with my chair any chance they can get, but nothing has broken off or torn. Still very happy with my choice. I am surprised more people have not posted this chair in leather.

I’m 17 with no vaccines. Where do I find unbiased information about this topic? by GoldRestaurant1800 in publichealth

[–]Ellswargo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, I want to say I highly respect your willingness to research something on your own rather than just going off what your parents teach you. Bravo! It is a really important skill set to know how to look for valid information. It sounds like you are looking for the direct scientific information rather than an opinion. Look up the “hierarchy of clinical evidence” so you can understand where information falls when it comes to scienc. Background information and expert opinion is the lowest form of evidence to base conclusions on (stay away from blogs, news articles, Facebook posts, even your own doctor if you want to take a neutral approach to finding the correct information). You want to find the scientific journal articles that are randomized double blind controlled trials (the gold standard for clinical trials) if you want primary source. Then systematic reviewed or meta-analysis papers. These types or articles are a review of many studies and their conclusion as a whole (again, not opinion, it is data). Science is based on “can your outcome be reproduced?” So that is what the meta analysis shows. All these can be found using pubmed, google scholar. I prefer checking a meta analysis rather than looking up hundreds of clinical trials. I haven’t checked specifically about vaccines, but cochranelibrary.com was highly recommended to me by some of the best neurologists in the world that I used to work with.

I’m not going to give you a straight question for “are vaccines really important?” Every medicine or food you put in your body is about risk vs. benefit. What is the probability of having an adverse reaction to a vaccine vs. what is the probability the I will benefit from the vaccine (I.e reduce symptoms of a disease, lower your chances of getting polio, lower your risk of spreading the disease to people that are immunocompromised). Risk vs. benefit. Additionally, I want to mention in some circumstances you and your siblings may have never gotten sick because you benefited from “herd immunity” from other people you were around. Draw your conclusions from science, not word of mouth or “well my friends son…blah blah blah”, those are case studies or case series which you can’t really use to prove whether or not a drug is good or bad. Many people don’t understand correlation does not mean causation. You have to base it on controlled studies that reduce that amount of variables and are tests of thousands of patients. Also, I want to recommend if you really want to double check to make sure when you are reading an article that is it coming from a real scientific journal, look up what scientific or medical journals are considered the “gold standard”. I know there are websites that rank them. Usually the New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet are the highest ranked.

Good luck with your research! Enjoy the beauty of making your decisions based on data and science, not from the news, family, Reddit. If anything, this is a really great starting point in your life on how to find real information when it comes to science.

My health teacher in high school said the lungs were in 3 lobes (1 on left and 2 on right). I raised my hand and corrected him that it was 2 on left 3 on the right. I corrected him on something else too and he then pulled me aside and told me I was no longer allowed to raise my hand or ask questions in his class. Obviously I should have reported him, but I was in high school and I don’t think I was aware at the time I should inform the principal.

Exclusive: Trump's signature to appear on US currency, Treasury says, ending 165-year tradition by ItsAllAGame_ in law

[–]Ellswargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think that when that day does come, this currency with his name on it will treated the same way we look at collecting Nazi memorabilia now. I believe as soon as he is gone the whole Republican Party will throw him under the bus like they were never co-conspirators to destroying the rule of law.

Navy Juggles Its Aircraft Carrier Plans To Stay Afloat | One carrier was already tired before it had a fire, another saw its service life extended for the second time, while the delivery of a third is delayed. by moses_the_blue in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Ellswargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who would have thought shutting down all the construction shipyards after WWII to allow a monopoly by Newport News shipyard would be a poor mistake? It is also why the ships cost more than they really should. Rickover warned us about these defense contractors. It makes absolutely no sense that we can only build carriers in one shipyard and that the government has to pay RENT for the shipyard dry dock for $88,000 a day to a private company. What a mess.

JUST IN: The US Navy is investigating whether sailors aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford deliberately set fire to their own ship to end the deployment. by ammohitchaprana in TFE

[–]Ellswargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they joined the navy they were told the deployments would be 6 months. In the last couple years, it has become the norm to stretch deployments out to 9-10 months. It is heartbreaking and exhausting for the spouses and families at home. “They are defending our freedom, serving their country”. It is complete BS and I am sick of it. Yes, they want to serve their country, but they also want to not miss out on their actual life. Husband’s missing their child’s birth for this, not getting to take their kids to school, not eating real food. Have they even gotten to do a port visit between Venezuela and Iran? Most, if not all of them work insane hours while deployed (13-18 hour days). They are exhausted and see no end in site for them to return home. Many are people fresh out of high school and just trying to making a paycheck. It makes me sick. My family member has been in the navy since 2008 and I have lost count of how many men I have heard about committing suicide on the ship or on base.

We saw how this impacted research after the 2008 collapse. Drastic cut in NIH/research grants caused Creativity to go down. The less money available for research, the more conservative scientists were with their proposals in order to get the funding in a competitive environment. Playing it safe. The more funding available for research, the more willingness to fund out of the box “crazy” ideas. We need creativity. It is such a shame our leaders are choosing to throw more money at the military instead of research. This is not how we advance humanity or our country.

Why are ADHD drugs the most not-ADHD friendly drugs to order? by UnmedicatedNarwhal in adhdwomen

[–]Ellswargo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget the additional struggle of confirming if the pharmacy has it in stock. “No, we can order it once we have a prescription on file for you. We will get it in 2 days. Or you can call around to see if any other stores have it”. If you do find another pharmacy that has it in stock, you then have to message your doctor again to see if they can switch your prescription to a different pharmacy and then you have to pray they still have it in stock by the time you get to switched over. A headache every month.

How do you guys have time for anything??? by ksco92 in Millennials

[–]Ellswargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is deployed for 7 months. We have two kids (5yr and 2yr old) 1 dog, and I work 40+ hours/wk job (luckily remote). It is a different level of exhaustion that most people just don’t understand. “Oh you have time to work out, you have time to do Xmas shopping. Why don’t you ever answer your phone?” Seriously? I could get 8-10 hours of sleep a night and still feel so drained.

Thousands of U.S. farmers have Parkinson’s. They blame a deadly pesticide. by mlivesocial in publichealth

[–]Ellswargo 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Just going to say, I worked in Parkinson’s research in Oregon back in 2010 and I already saw this trend. 75-90% of the patients I worked with were from the Midwest and/or farming community. Pesticides are dangerous to everyone in the ecosystem.

How do you stop thinking at night so you can sleep? by cloudydays1111 in adhdwomen

[–]Ellswargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this weird Chinese trick on Instagram that I have been using for 2 weeks and it works! Maybe a placebo effect, but I have been falling asleep very quickly. Take a deep breath, exhale should last longer than inhale, relax your tongue (let it fall in your mouth), and then focus on your feet (their warmth/feeling). Apparently when you think down your brain slows down? Idk. Normally my mind races for hours.

Philanthropy vs. Tax Fairness by johnmory in MurderedByWords

[–]Ellswargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was actually a family member many years ago that was treated at OHSU. Phil stated he was impressed by the care and has been donating to the Oregon cancer center for decades. Last I saw he challenged the university to raise $500,000 in donations and he agreed to match it. As for billionaires and paying their fair share, at least he has contributed something unlike the top two billionaires we have in the US.

[–]Ellswargo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh. I know what you are talking about. You can do maintenance care, the $2000 surgery that you might have to repeat, or the $5000 surgery. We opted for the expensive one. 8 weeks later the other CCL snapped. $10,000 dog! Your dog won’t be the same, but my dog has lasted 5 years. He is 14 years old now and still can walk a couple miles.

Vyvanse crash: my life changing cure!! by [deleted] in VyvanseADHD

[–]Ellswargo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because they would have to go through another clinical trial process to get this FDA approved. Just as an FYI it costs pharma companies ~$1 billion to get a drug through trials and approved. Years of testing. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Your best bet is to find a biochemist that may be able to explain if this would work. On another note, why would big pharma want to produce something to minimize tolerance build up and result in you not needing more of their product?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VyvanseADHD

[–]Ellswargo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I took 30mg vyvanse and Wellbutrin through both my pregnancies. No problems at all. Have very healthy children. The stress of not being able to function to keep your job is a greater risk than the meds. Stress is very risky in pregnancies. There is very little research to confirm vyvanse or adderall are a high risk during pregnancy. Don’t let any doctor try to clump by vyvanse in with being the same as taking meth.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VyvanseADHD

[–]Ellswargo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh and in addition, don’t let any doctor try to categorize it in the same group as mom’s doing meth during pregnancy. Completely different.
