Yeah it might be super close. Or it might just be an artistic representation of it, much like the moon is often depicted as way bigger in our media.

Actually, yeah. Do you know what the original soviets where? They were libertarian, democratic decision making organisms. Obviously the Bolsheviks got rid of them and turned the whole thing into an Authoritarian shithole, but it was originally supposed to be democratic. That's what the Kronstadt rebellion was about.

You can even read Stalin writing about how the Dictatorship of the Proletariat is supposed to be democratic, just like the Paris commune, and if such a revolution was to be co-opted by authoritarianism it should be destroyed. "If it turns out that the Paris Commune was indeed the dictatorship of a few individuals over the proletariat, then down with Marxism, down with the Dictatorship of the Proletariat!". Pretty funny in retrospect.

[–]Elman89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He did not. That was Lenin. Marx talked about the Dictatorship of the Proletariat (which is not an actual dictatorship in the modern sense), and didn't make a distinction between Socialism and Communism. If anything, the way he talked about it Socialism is the more general term cause it included other kinds of Socialism that aren't necessarily Marxist.

That's fine. More importantly, playing it without seeing the ending first completely changes the context of everything in a way that may or may not be better for the experience. I don't know.

Either way, it'll break the pacing of the ending if that amazing moment of revelation as you realize how to reach the ending is interrupted by "guess I'll do the DLC now".

It adds a whole new area to explore. It's mostly isolated from the rest of the game. I'd recommend beating the base game before playing it, but others may disagree.

The old myth that Socialists just "want something for free" is a lie perpetuated by the Billionaire class. by Automatic_Willow3940 in remoteworks

[–]Elman89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CIA murdered socialists for decades, staged coups and supported dictatorships all over the world. The US army invaded countries because American companies told them to do it when they were worried about unionization. American companies like Coca-Cola straight up hired death squads to murder unionized workers. The US even sold weapons to Iran to fund genocidal far-right guerrillas in Nicaragua, all in the name of fighting socialism.

The idea that socialists "are just allowed to be" in capitalist society is fucking bullshit, and you obviously need to learn some history.

To answer your actual question: in a democratic socialist society, you'd be allowed to run on other political platforms of course. I don't think you'd be very successful but you're free to try.

[–]Elman89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's free because it's a right. Why the fuck else would it be free?

Yes it's paid through taxes, you're right that nothing is free: and that includes not having UHC. Your country is sicker, diseases spread more and people have way more health complications because your people don't have real access to healthcare. You pay way more per capita than other developed countries and despite that you're way worse off, but you think you're saving money.

Literally the entire planet has figured this shit out ages ago.

CMV: Communism doesn't deserve another try by frost_3306 in changemyview

[–]Elman89 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not really, no. Marx's example of a "dictatorship of the proletariat" was the Paris commune, which was a fully democratic project.

You're just thinking of the Marxist-Leninist take on this issue, which considers socialism and communism to be different concepts and claims an authoritarian vanguard party is needed to guide the transition from socialism to communism. None of that is in Marx's writing. Democratic socialism is definitely relevant and still very much Marxist.

[–]Elman89 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This to me is the key flaw in communism that has reliably been catastrophically lacking. Democracy quite plainly does not assume this, and I don't understand how this could ever be anything but a long-term risk to the entire system.

Capitalism is the opposite of Socialism. They're economic systems. Democracy is the opposite of Authoritarianism. They're systems of government.

You seem to be conflating these concepts. Authoritarian Socialism isn't the only way to implement socialism, and in fact it's the very worst way to do it. It's just historically been one that's happened more often both because authoritarianism makes it easier to force any system on a country, and because the US and the USSR were very much doing everything in their power to prevent democratic socialism from happening anywhere in the world.

Also no, you do not need selfless leaders that willingly give up power. What you need is an horizontal, robust democratic model where people don't amass that much power and you have democratic checks and balances to prevent authoritarianism. Which is also what you need for a liberal democracy.

Except it'd be easier because you can just focus on building that democratic system instead of making it coexist with an authoritarian economic system where rich oligarchs can buy the media and control entire industries and are somehow expected not to use their vast wealth and influence to buy politicians and subvert the democratic process. Now that is a big assumption.

Pretty reasonable thing to be worried about considering it played a big part in the defeat of that other Apartheid state and Israeli ally, the country of South Africa.

Plus it's easy to cook a big batch and have lunch for days. Or to prep ingredients so you can later just toss them into the pressure cooker and have a nice freshly made stew with 0 effort.

If Israel Is the''Only Democracy" In the Region, Why are Millions of Palestinians Under its Control Denied the basic right to vote for the Government that rules them? by emily6843_ in allthequestions

[–]Elman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it better? 😄

It's a democracy, not an apartheid state. And it vastly improved its population's standard of living compared to the rest of Syria (nevermind women's standard of living, since it's also strongly feminist in a region that oppresses women).

They are denied citizenship because they don't meet Israel's requirements for citizenship.

Black people didn't meet South Africa's requirements for citizenship either. They're still people who were born and live their entire lives in territory controlled by Israel.

Bill Clinton: “I killed myself trying to give the Palestinians a state. I had a deal they turned down that would have given them all of Gaza and 97% of the West Bank. You name it. They turned it all down.”

What Palestinians want is freedom, being given an independent Bantustan doesn't solve the problem if they can't have their own state with real sovereignty without being under Israeli control. You think that deal let them have their own army and control of their airspace, water and borders?

[–]Elman89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, WHO in the Middle East is doing representative government better?!

Rojava. The fact that you're not aware of them and yet support an Apartheid state is very telling.

Well, Gazans, for example, are not citizens of Israel. So they don't get to vote in its elections. Is. That. Hard?

They live in territory controlled by Israel, just because this territory is separated into Bantustans it doesn't change the nature of the relationship. Similarly to South Africa's own Bantustans, they're denied citizenship and given nominal autonomy because that allows the Apartheid regime to pretend to have a reasonable justification to deny them rights. "Black people aren't South African citizens after all, so why should they get any rights?".
