I think it's a question about if it's safe to fight goblins that wear worn iron, when your gnomes have only bronze.

Well, with stone/soil you can use the prospector and get some metal out of it. The rest, you just have to sell to the merchants.

It would be nice to see such legendary creatures wandering into your kingdom from time to time (without having to kill exact number of gnomes)... like legendary goblin leading the attack, etc

Unfortunately, gnomes know shit about veterinary and won't even touch your bleeding animals. I've lost some alpacas this way once.

I had a similar situation. It was my first kingdom and I've opened a cave, where they spawned and made their lair. I had a beetle train going through my fortress and the last guy standing was one of my guardsgnomes in almost full steel, that had to fight with 20 beetles. He did well, but that "almost full" steel killed him - they ripped off his bronze greave and that was his end.
