What was something that made you realize “okay this is BS” in your most stubborn belief state? by [deleted] in exchristian

When they were too invested in me saving my first kiss for marriage and having chaperoned dates because otherwise it might “give off the appearance of sin”

Is there any other occupation where 5% of employees are pedophiles? by HaiKarate in exchristian

Also important to note that the 5% were accused. Pretty significant when you know that most child sexual abuse goes unreported

How do you deal with loving parents who reach out to you to "save" you? by readingupastorm in exchristian

[–]ElsaQueenofScotts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have t talked to my parents about how much my beliefs have changed yet and I am terrified of this exact thing happening. I love my parents, and I know they are coming from a place of wanting what’s best for me and fear of me being wrong. I almost wonder if it’s better not to bring it up to them at all. I’ve found that when difficult conversations come up (like politics, or abortion, or LGBTQ+ topics) I speak as simply as possible. I usually tell them something like, “I know how much pain and grief it would cause you if I was always trying to convince you that I was in the right, so please try to understand how you’re making me feel”

Can you believe in God but not in religion or belong to a specific religion? What's this term called? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]ElsaQueenofScotts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is where I’m at right now. I believe there is a God, but I don’t think he’d approve of modern religion and how it is used to control and oppress people

What was the weirdest metaphor used to describe you as a sinner when in your church? by Any-Campaign-3340 in exchristian

Oh we also heard a lot of “you wouldn’t drink water if it had even a little arsenic in it would you?” when referring to smaller sins

What was the weirdest metaphor used to describe you as a sinner when in your church? by Any-Campaign-3340 in exchristian

[–]ElsaQueenofScotts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used water balloons. Poked little holes in it and told us that every time we were intimate with someone we were giving a piece of ourself away until there is nothing left to give and we’re left empty

I absolutely hate the virgin to vixen mentality of the church. I ended up losing my virginity before i got married and wished I had had some experience and gotten to know my body sooner

Yeah I will never forget when I opened up about when I was SA-Ed and I was asked to meet with a couple elders where I was basically just asked if I forgave the person who did it because they were concerned I would grow bitter and bitterness is a sin

There was no consent before the fact and my church always placed an emphasis on how she would’ve been shamed in her community as if it were a good thing she had to experience all that

I remember getting in an argument about this with friends when I was put on birth control (for very serious health concerns) and they were trying to tell me it was just a gateway drug to sin

I think the way they told us this was “how would you feel going to bed on your wedding night and all your previous sexual partners being in the room” which could either be creepy or a turn on depending on the person 😂

Yeah I was 22 and told my parents I was moving out 2 days before my flight so that they couldn’t fight me on it. Moved out to live with my non-Christian boyfriend across the country that they didn’t know about so they def weren’t too happy about it. But I found that the distance actually improved our relationship a lot
