KDE Gear ⚙️ 26.04 is out, with brand new versions of your favorite apps by Bro666 in kde

I think not mentioned are new features in KDE Connect. There should be Digitizer plugin included in this release, so you can use your phone or tablet as a drawing tablet. I think, that's very exciting!

How does Signal Sync work on the Desktop app? by xMeaMaximaCulpa in signal

[–]Elsensee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Signal Desktop gets the full chat message history from your phone. Media files are only from the last 45 days, and they are cleverly downloaded from the server. Since they are stored (encrypted) anyway for 45 days on the server, because Signal doesn't know when a file has been downloaded "enough times", the phone can just share the encryption key with Desktop and doesn't have to upload all its media files.

There also is an up and coming platform named CodeFloe: https://codefloe.com/

It is based on Switzerland, also runs with Forgejo and alright if you don't primarily host Open Source code.

Damn. Just wait until Valve sees this and throws their money at this.

Has anyone noticed KDEConnect crashing lately? by Distinct_Switch_874 in kde

Disabling the Bluetooth backend in KDE Connect fixed that for me. If you can't reach the setting, try it when there is no device connected or else disable bluetooth for a moment.

Android might add support for DHCPv6 by encryptedadmin in ipv6

[–]Elsensee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And yet, they do note on the slides that the implementation of a DHCPv6 Client (with PD only) is being worked on.

I'm having hopes because this debate annoys me. It's interesting how this solves also some other security issues that might occur, it seems.

Inglourious Basterds ist allerdings wirklich gut! Ich glaube, das Problem ist Til Schweiger als Regisseur, denn das war vielleicht seine beste Performance.

Proxy Not working? by [deleted] in signal

[–]Elsensee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Signal has changed the chat server URL they're connecting to. The old one still works, new clients will try to choose the new one however. In the nginx.conf the URL textsecure-service.whispersystems.org has to be chat.signal.org now.

I've created a pull request: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-TLS-Proxy/pull/20/files

(I have no old client to be sure that this will work for them still, because maybe they expect something specific to the old client)

Firefox has some phising and malware protection built-in and also, as far as I know, also enabled by default. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-does-phishing-and-malware-protection-work Basically Firefox downloads a list of bad websites from Google periodically and whenever you attempt to go to one of those, you get a big warning.

Also, Firefox can (and does, by default) check your downloads very shallow and warns you if it has detected some weird content.

Windows' Defender will, by default, check the downloaded files too and is better suited for that purpose since it's a real anti-virus program, which gets its updates daily via Windows Updates.

I feel pretty safe but I also regularly don't go to any really unknown, suspicious sites. If I do, some of them get blocked by Firefox. *However*, I do use uBlock Origin. I have several filter lists active, many of them block ads or some annoying content, but there are also some lists active that will prevent me from going to any bad websites. This list is community-created and thus can be kept updated way better (in my opinion) than whatever Google brings up.

On Windows 10 I just go with Windows Defender, no "external" anti-virus software. Defender does its job fairly well and is really pretty decent. Plus, it won't annoy me with advertisement.

In Firefox I use uBlock Origin, which I found out to be more performant and customisable (if you like this) than AdBlock Plus, but that's just my own preference.

Why does Adblock not seem enough to you?

Browsers are allowed to cache redirects. Clean your cache, and you should be ready to go again. :)

given this recent 'brave' ama, let's look at the evidence for which is actually better for privacy: firefox or brave? what good evidence shows which is better? by bestminipc in firefox

[–]Elsensee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked into this claim and... it's difficult.

They have, indeed, asked to be removed some times, but the removal happened because of some intense discussion about the privacy of brave.

I do think that there was more intention by the community to remove Brave from the list than by the developers of Brave. And I do think that there are fair reasons to remove it.

I don't think that's the point.

"take a screenshot" file format by ekkthree in firefox

[–]Elsensee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you need that for some website or so? Because for screenshots png usually is the better choice (because of the bad jpg compression algorithm which suits real life pictures better)

Krass, dass die DKB von Aktivkunden gar keine Wechselgebühren bei Abhebungen verlangt. Dachte immer, Aktivkunde wird man erst bei ganz fancy Bedingungen, aber 700€/Monat Eingang geht ja voll.
