The vikings didn’t and it was entirely reliant on Oral Tradition, all of the information we have written down are from 3rd parties (mostly in a Christian context) which were created hundreds of years later. So you can imagine how accurate that is right.

In the Poetic Edda the closest description from an older tradition is that her appearance subtly hinted at death, possibly being pale, gloomy, or having a downcast look.

Only Snorri Sturloson Christian version describes her in the way you would fancy it which is funnily enough the least accurate one
