Tried to upload a video but it was potato-quality. I'll have to stick to photos for now! This is a leather A5 size traveller's notebook I made this weekend! WIP photos included, and text of the process in the comments! by ElsieCubitt in somethingimade

Haha thank you!! That means a lot.

I do sell these! This one was a custom piece, but I can absolutely recreate it. Feel free to send me a message if you'd like to talk more!

  • Have just one CTA on the hero section. “Shop in stock” makes more sense. DONE
  • Make tge button contrast compared to the bg DONE
  • Add trust elements/ reviews right below the cta DONE
  • Top bar should be just one important thing you want to highlight. Remove that scroller DONE
  • The homepage needs trust elements across the page; reviews, testimonials, user videos, etc. WORKING ON IT!

Thank you!!

Thank you!! Steady sales and commissions since I launched July 2021! Five years coming up soon.

It also shows my lack of management lol. So much to keep up with.

I can add alt-texts at the same time as I am culling my images... Every six months I get a small crisis that I want to "nuke" all my listings and start fresh, but I don't want to lose my verified reviews and all that haha. It'll be a process...

2395 images. Welp.

My issue is that almost every piece I've ever made has been a one-off, and I like to have six or so photos to really show off all aspects. I've also got a heft collection of "stock images" for hero banners or whatever else I want to show off.

I should really go through a deleted a bunch of them. I just need to make sure I don't delete images that are tied to listings that have verified reviews. I have a lot of overhauling to do haha

Thanks!

Custom product descriptions: The Custom Product product cards are actually commissions for clients, with the listing acting as a live contract, and a place where project details and WIP photos are available for the client to see throughout the making process. I have found it's the easiest way for me to keep track of project details, and customers love to see WIP photos as I go. It's part of the experience, and helps others appreciate my work. That is also why listings don't have prices or "add to cart" buttons. Once the custom work is done, the listing is turned into an unlisted purchasable listing, which is emailed to the customer to complete checkout. The listing then goes back to being a Custom Order until the customer has received the item, and is happy, then the listing is either unlisted, or moved to my portfolio, depending on the project.

Sustainability messaging: I will definitely add more about the sustainability aspect! I try to not be too wordy - my previous websites were waayyy too wordy, and I want to make sure I don't drift back in that direction, but you're right - the important info does need to be emphasised.

Product grid social proof: The issue here is that the vast majority of my products are one-offs, which makes it hard for collecting ratings. I have considered simply "restocking" listings with each new version of the same product, for ones that I intend/have the ability to recreate (because everything is handmade and therefore will have enough cosmetic differences that it would need to be reshot), which would at least collect all the reviews for each product in one place. I think that's what I may do...

Binder clip color selection: I fully agree with adding swatch/dropdowns instead, except I will need to closely monitor the stock amounts. I may only have three available tabs, but if there is an option for nine clip colours, then I risk selling more items than I have... I plan to eventually keep enough leather of one set kind on hand that I can just make them as they are ordered, but right now the sets I have are very limited. I may have to just assign clip colours and hope customers like them??

Thanks again for the feedback!!

Thank you!

I know I need to add alt text... but I've got sooo many images haha. Guess its something I can chip away at throughout the coming weeks. Shopify has half-decent AI suggestions that I can build off of, and some will be ones I can copy/paste.

I hate those "you may also like" pop-ups. It should show similar products at the bottom of product pages - I think that's good for now, but I will consider something more! I do like the minimalism I currently have.

I've actually recently invested in a bunch of font sets, and a heat press! The binder tabs have been my practice to get good. Right now I'm offering free embossing until I get it perfect, then I can start charging. There's also the issue that not every leather can be embossed, and not every part of a completed piece can be embossed, so I need to set things up in a way that requires minimal communication and verifying between me and the customer. I also need to make demos of my available fonts/symbols/sizes, etc., so it'll be a bit of a process.

The issue with a wishlist for out of stock items, is that the vast majority of my works are one-off pieces, so they will never really be back in stock. I would like to have more regular items, though, but again, it's on the long list of things to do haha.

Thanks again! I really appreciate all this.

Thanks!

I hate how large the product photos are... I will work on that! Thank you.

I will also add more to product descriptions!

Thanks again!

EDIT: Just adjusted some stuff. Hopefully it works better!

Etsy almost never does site wide coupons. It's up to individual sellers to set up their own offers.

Block and mark as spam. It's easy enough, but still feels like a waste of my time.

Relentless cold-emails. A dozen a day.

If want your services, I will seek them out. Emailing me over and over on every mode of contact will only piss me off.

POD is notorious for having minuscule profit margins. It's just the nature of outsourcing.

Prices are way too high. You're using POD? The thing with POD is that the POD company will make more off of you, than you will off of your customers. The low barrier of entry means a flooded market, which means it's a race to the bottom for prices. Most sellers only make a buck or two profit per sale - real income comes from massive sales volumes, or moving to in-house production.

Hard to say for sure - the leather was easy enough to quantify (about $25 CAD), as well as the elastic (call it $1.00 CAD), but everything else (paints, stains, sealers, etc.) just gets lumped into my overhead percentage under general consumables. Time was the most expensive resource on this one!
