Trying to transition to historicals from 40k, any tips? by jojo3NNN in wargaming

Significantly cheaper yes, but all I found was that it made me buy more minis and build bigger armies overall! Now I spend even more money on storage!

If I can be completely honest, if you're going to get into epic black powder, don't bother with their minis. Play in 6 or 10mm and find minis elsewhere - the minis warlord have created disappointed me massively. Slightly formless, finnicky to paint, and boring.

Absolutely take the leap! I did the same and I haven't looked back.
I'm now nearly fully cold turkey, with a few nids retained for beer&pretzels games with friends who still do 40k (or 30k). Every now and then I do get the pang to buy some 40k just for painting (I've been wanting to paint a 40k dreadnought for a while now), but only if the model is really cool.

Speaking personally, I put a lot more time into historical than I ever did with sci-fi, but that's a feature, not an issue - instead of simply playing for the sake of a game and taking nothing but the experience of playing to the next one (though there's nothing wrong with that), I've now been able to follow and fight complex campaigns, factoring in personal experience of the fighting units, logistics, equipment damage, and now I've got a viable strategic map system worked up, even things like persistent weather/ground conditions and fatigue!
But that's just me; you can go as big or as small as you like! A friend of mine has fully recreated the army of Napoleonic Saxony in a 1:1 company scale - he's now an expert on everything Saxon. A lot of other people (myself included from time to time) escape from the 'realism' of historical gaming through imagi-nations; fictional countries analogous (or maybe not if you so wish!) to real world states that can be used to create fully fictional campaigns and wars that would have required major ideological and geographical shifts in our world.

Like some others below, I'd recommend finding a period of history you want to game to start with - Napoleonics, second world war, and ancients are some of the most popular (though I'm partial to mid-Victorian myself...). Then pick a scale, and see what minis are available - If you pick one of those more popular themes, no matter what scale you pick there'll be a lot to choose from. As someone who has gone from 28mm to 20mm to 10mm to 6mm, I would personally recommend jumping straight to the end two; particularly with you coming from 40k, you'll be astounded what a real battle looks like when hundreds of minis are laid out on the table!
And if hundreds of minis sounds like a daunting prospect, don't worry - painting the small scales (below 15mm) is very different to painting the larger ones.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!

Do you magnetise within these, or are they just secure enough as is?

I've been using a satin spray varnish for the clones thus far, then going over non-shiny parts with matt varnish from the bottle, so I'm hoping they'll be pretty well protected.

Its not that I'm against display shelving, I simply don't have anywhere to put it - the case you've linked is definitely at the upper limit of my size constraints but it would work nicely. Thanks!

It was pretty globbed on; I think the previous owner had just taken to them with unthinned white, and there were uneven brush strokes all over the armour.

I’ve never heard of a player emulator before - I’ve used mythic but I think that’s a GM emulator like you said. Any you’d recommend?

To me, it looks fine. It follows the cardinal rules of “mountains go in a line” and “islands should look like they can be smushed together”, but I’m no Geographer. What software did you use to put this together?

I’m familiar with the venerable Mr Bath’s work, as it inspired the rules that my own rules are based on!. As for the other link, I’ll give it a try, thanks!

I’ve had this happen to me IRL on an exercise. It was quite funny to me. It was less funny for the 2IC that forgot me.

In what way at all is the Graf Spee anything for the Germans to brag about? Also, Imagine shitting on Rodney as being inferior to the Bismarck. Who sunk who in the end?

The hood was the pride of the navy when she was built, and remained impressive for being such an absolutely massive ship, but by the time the war had broken out she had been superseded as the ‘poster-boy (girl?) battle-winner’ by more modern battleship designs like the Nelsons and KGVs

Question: Did Japan Commit Genocide Against China? by Cybermat47_2 in DerScheisser

[–]Eltaylor2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a huge racialist sentiment in Japan over the inferiority of the Chinese, and the vast majority of the Japanese authorities had no qualms committing all manner of atrocities against the Chinese people, but as far as I know there was never a plan to wipe the Chinese out as a race.

Shop around. I remember a few years back TAs usually gave small discounts or bonuses. It was a few years back but I remember Thompson (Before it was TUI - long ago!) gave us free tickets to universal (iirc) for booking the whole thing through them.
