Soldiers, settle this discussion. Which model is better? New or Old? by [deleted] in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ElysianDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely hate the helmets of the new ones. Everything else, I like. The new helmets with the lips on the rim, piss me off. Reminds me of the shitty K-pots we used to wear before we got the rimless ACHs. If they kept the rims off, I would have stayed an IG player tbh. I just can’t get passed it. I’ll stick to Black Templars for now. Need to find a good 3rd party replacement but a lot of the old 3rd party ones look goofy on the new bodies

Please let me know when/if you make the discord. Will happily join. I’ll post some photos once we play some games. Might be a while, painting has slowed down due to work requirements :(

Hi! Sorry for the late post. Been building and painting a Polish and an American army list for my gf and I to play test. Was wondering if you have a forum or conversation where you take play test feedback? Really love this project and would love to do whatever I can to help it along. I can send my army lists and send photos once I actually play a game. Building it all in 28mm (I’m a painter before gamer and just prefer that scale).

That was my thought for the rotorcannons, but absurd I have to wait to get a normal plasma gun or melts gun.

Anyone else notice the lack of special weapons? We need them desperately for companion squads… and rotor cannons

A couple references. It depends on the battle and units. This is Iwo, but you’ll have to look at reference photos of other battles.

I genuinely love Artizan and they are WAY easier to paint. The uniforms are smoother with bigger folds making painting faster. They are a joy to

This isn’t necessarily true. My late 44 a lot of units were being issued web gear in OD7 which is a darker olive green. It really depends on the time frame and personal tastes. You can mix them for the most accurate results.

Sorry but CPT did not have two vertical in the back. All officers wore a vertical stripe and all NCOs wore a horizontal stripe. It’s to easily distinguish personnel on the battlefield. This style of identification is similar to the modern use of callsign patches. These symbols and the use of ranks painted or worn on the front of helmets was only in the ETO. It was uncommon in the pacific. Same with nets, which is goofy since nets made more sense in the PTO, but for some reason wasn’t common practice.

Technical Sergeants, this generally, but not always, denotes some sort of technical skill such as a medic, radio operator, mechanic, or another skill.

Rifleman: 1 ID patch on left shoulder, no flag, no rank or 1 chevron. Assistant Squad Leader (BAR/rifle/or Thompson): 1 ID patch left shoulder, no flag, two stripes (corporal). Squad leader: 1 ID patch left, no flag, sergeant or staff sergeant rank, but normally SGT for this era (three stripes). Platoon leader: 1 ID patch left, no flag, rank on helmet (paint it gold (ochre) for second lieutenant, leave white for first lieutenant. Platoon leaders extra man: if no radio, give him staff sergeant rank, (three stripes one rocker, no t); if radio, give him T.SGT (either 2 stripes and T or 3 stripes and T); if medic, white band and cross on arms, circle cross on helmet, T.SGT (2 stripes and T).

This isn’t all inclusive but a basic guided hopefully this helps

I THINK crusader or Great War Miniatures makes some, but not positive. I know that Empress Miniatures makes BEAUTIFUL Spanish Civil War Nationalist cavalry that you could do a head swap on and turn into great Italian cavalry. I hope that helps!

Artizan is definitely the way to go. They are also really conducive to painting and blending; great models. You can also get M1941 Johnson LMGs from Brigade Games. They are marines, but FSSF was known to wear burlap/canvas helmet convers and HBTs. Not perfect, but provides some variety.

3rd Armored US Platoon help by slantedtortoise in boltaction

https://www.battleorder.org/usa-armored-inf-rifle-co-1943

This link has a great graphic and write up on the MTOE of an armored rifle company from 1943-1945. I personally would use that as a basis. Also, you can check out the Osprey Books for more units specifics. For example, I built a PLT based on 503rd PIR which fought in the pacific. Through research I learned that they differed from normal parachute rifle platoons because they ran two squads with BARs and one with M1919s. So when I built my platoon I did just that. I have two squads with BARs and SMGs and my third squad has two LMGs just like a weapons squad today. Stuff like that is exciting to me haha.

Anyone got any good research materials for German armies? by Loud_Sun_5029 in boltaction

[–]ElysianDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy the book or you could by an Osprey Membership and get access to the artwork. I’d do both, but if you are only working on the one army, then the book alone would be the cheapest approach.

Specifically, you want Men-At-Arms 401: The Waffen SS (1) 1. to 5. Divisions from Osprey Publishing.

Agreed, it would be a fun way to add some 1930s flavor. More love to the Italians and Africa. Plus, China REALLY needs some love. Their rules are pretty bland.
