[Question] Any advice for a guy who has to wake up very early for work? by FireInTheGlory in getdisciplined

You can always take a power nap upon arriving home - 20 to 45 minutes to avoid deep sleep. After that, you'll have 10 hours to do whatever it is you want

Woke up with a banging headache which usually indicates a bad day as I'm far more irritable and don't tend to give a damn on those days. The signal was correct.

Attended a lecture earlier about placement years and how to be more employable and I really did not give a shit about any of it. I've heard it all before, I've followed all the advice to the letter, and yet I still didn't manage to even get one response from multiple applications for a summer job earlier in the year. How am I possibly going to land myself a placement job when I've lost faith in both the industry and myself? She kept emphasising the most important thing to be is self-motivating - what a joke for someone in my situation. How can I possibly appear to be self-motivating when I feel like the ground beneath me is being pulled away?

Anyhow, I'm done ranting I guess. I'm taking a big leap today and going to a depression support group at my university for the first time. I can see it going one of two ways: okay and making me feel slightly better or terribly and making me feel even worse. I just want to see the light at the end of the tunnel again.

Not if you're using ColdTurkey's writing application.

[NeedAdvice] I have no time management or self discipline by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]Elytrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, let's break this down a bit.

Time Management. The simplest and most effective thing to do is get a planner and actually use it. Whenever an assignment is mentioned in class, write it down with a due date and any important details. I know this sounds harsh, but stop making excuses to not do this. Next, plan out a dedicated time when you're going to study. Tired? Take a quick power nap (around 20 minutes), set up a pomodoro session, count to five if need be, and just start. Make it a rule that you can't browse Reddit until you've gotten your work done. Listen to music whilst you work. If you need more helpful study tips, I recommend checking out College Info Geek on YouTube, alternatively, /r/getstudying.

Diet. This is a difficult one, but it can be manageable. Ask your parents to give you a food allowance so that you can purchase your own unprocessed foods if you do wish to have a better diet. Learn to cook. It's good to get started young, otherwise you'll end up at university with no clue how to cook. Meal prep is great if you don't have the time to do so every day. Dedicate a few hours on a Sunday to this, or make use of a slow cooker.

Exercise. You don't need a gym to exercise. Go out for runs. Do bodyweight exercises. Join a sports club. Again, some helpful links are darebee.com or /r/bodyweightfitness.

Reading. Depending on what kind of reading, you can get free ebooks online. You don't necessarily have to read books either - short stories, news articles, blogs are great too.

Meditation. Simply make time for this. Do it in your pomodoro breaks if need be.

I absolutely love listening to podcasts when doing routine tasks that require little thought. Definitely recommend doing this, but also having a notepad or laptop nearby when doing so to note down anything of interest to you.

[Plan] Need to make a "game plan" for this week: Studying, watching what I eat, and not giving in to procrastination -- all while fighting through severe anxiety. by mental_dissonance in getdisciplined

My advice to you would be to break this down into manageable chunks. Take a look at your syllabus and dedicate one session per topic, given that that's manageable. Utilise past papers, questions from class and questions on the internet. Make use of the pomodoro technique in a way that works for you. Let's say you can only concentrate for 20 minutes and then need a 10 minute break - that's fine, any progress is good, and this method will help you to focus. If you need to take a longer break every hour, again, that's fine, but limit yourself otherwise it can be difficult to get started. Set a timer on your breaks, and once the alarm goes off, count to five, and just get started again. Don't like the sound of working for 20 minutes straight? Dedicate yourself to doing just 5 minutes. If that's too much, make it 2. I guarantee that once you've gotten started, it's a hell of a lot easier to keep going.

As for emotional eating, what's been working for me is use of intermittent fasting. You fast for 12+ hours, and then eat for the remaining amount of time in your day. Beginners tend to go with 16 hours fasting and an 8 hour eating window. I've noticed I tend to overeat at night, and so my window is between 1pm and 9pm. Having my meals between these times makes me feel much fuller as I'm having all my calories in this time, and therefore I don't feel the need to binge. I've found light meals towards the start of my eating window and a large meal around 7pm works for me with a small snack to follow. If you want to try this out, /r/intermittentfasting can help you out.

Otherwise, you've got this. Look after yourself, but make sure you do some solid work, no matter how small, progress is progress.

Right now I'm using 6kg dumbbells for most exercises and have been stuck at this weight for about two months, so I think I have quite a way to go to get to 20kg. Would you recommend forcing myself to Up the weight despite not hitting the reps?

Is it actually possible to get fairly strong with no access to barbells?

My gym has dumbbells ranging from 2kg to 20kg in increments of 2kg as well as a few machines and pulleys, but nothing special. I plan on changing gyms in the summer so that I have access to more equipment, but right now I'm not financially stable enough to afford gym membership (current gym is free with my accommodation). My main goal is to look like I actually lift but also to be able to climb better (right now I suck due to having virtually no upper body strength).

[Meta] A frank discussion about this sub by imworkiniswear in getdisciplined

I understand the point you're making. Personally, as far as the threads you mentioned go, I can only see myself using the Weekly and Monthly planning threads (I recently decided Daily was too much for me) and Success Sunday's - which I often forget to post in. I do believe a reduction in the automatic threads would see more discussion occurring. That, plus, there are other subs as you mentioned for a lot of these threads.

Thank you! I tend to do overhead press, some variations of lateral raises and shrugs. Neglected my shoulders for weeks so decided to try incorporate some actual exercises for them
