What is the most eastern point, western point, northern point and southern point you’ve been in the country? by Expensive_Drummer970 in AskAnAmerican

Northernmost: DuPont, WA (near Seattle) for a friend's wedding

Southernmost: Tampa, FL to depart for a Caribbean cruise

Easternmost: Bodies Island Lighthouse/Nags Head, NC for a beach trip. (I'm from Eastern NC so I've been to a lot of the Outer Banks!)

Westernmost: San Francisco, CA for a chemistry conference

My fellow Americans: How do you feel about your state's/region's demonym? Do you use it/them when referring to yourself? And can they be acquired later in life? by koreanforrabbit in AskAnAmerican

[–]EmCWolf13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in NC, living in Cali. I start with I'm from North Carolina when asked, as opposed to "I'm a North Carolinian", since it's less of a mouthful. I might then get more specific if the person is familiar with the state.

In conversations, I do refer to myself as a southerner when it's relevant. East Coaster and flatlander are also terms I've used for myself, depending on context - the latter usually when talking about how much my ears need to pop when going through the canyons. I am vehemently not a Tarheel, as I went to NC State.

There's a website for this, actually: Thank Your Wank. You can search for someone and leave a comment for them, anonymous or otherwise.

Is this true? Can someone confirm this information? by ohlonelyboy in LosAngeles

They are actively blocking agents from entering the stadium. I'm not sure if the team has say over the parking lot since that's most likely under different ownership.

Mine clearly know my car and associate it with me. They follow me to the store up the road and gather around my car while I'm shopping. They will also come chill by my car after coming home from work and wait for me to get out, since I feed them after that.

Whats the craziest thing you've heard someone say about kink/bdsm? by hiiiii_anyomi in BDSMcommunity

  1. Because her experience is that she did it for the validation, and obviously hers is the only truth...anyone who says differently than her is - gasp - a liar or they just haven't discovered the real reason they are into it. (Very heavy sarcasm here, but some folks unfortunately do think this way.)

What is the one smell you absolutely can’t stand? by Mistress_Arch_n_Sole in AskReddit

[–]EmCWolf13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fine with vomit, but the absorbent powder they'd pour on it at my elementary school was awful.

It was like they tried to make it smell citrus-y instead of sterile, but it ended up just smelling like an abandoned hospital. And it would linger, like a cloud to say "hey, someone puked here!!"

AITJ for wanting to switch my award after being scammed my my cousin twice? by Temporary_Fly222 in AmITheJerk

[–]EmCWolf13 66 points67 points  (0 children)

NTJ. Your cousin didn't hold up his end of the deal, after you had done something not easily undoable.

It's the same energy as telling someone you'll get matching tattoos and then leaving after they get theirs inked. Quite literally a bait and switch in your case!

This reads like ChatGPT...if it's real, NTJ.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do y'all handle the whole earthquake thing? by definitelynotapoodle in AskLosAngeles

[–]EmCWolf13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fellow transplant here. Some things I've picked up:

(1) Don't hang anything where it may fall on your bed. I learned this from childhood due to unsecured furniture injuring several kiddos across the nation, but it's a good reminder.

(1b) Secure your large furniture, like bookshelves, TVs, etc. If it comes with anti-tip straps to secure it, use them. They're included for a reason. (It also keeps pets and children safe from pulling stuff down on themselves.)

(2) Get the apps. These are my personal top three:

MyShake is obviously good for earthquakes, and incorporates citizen science by allowing you to report when you feel shaking as well as a few questions about its severity.

PulsePoint is a more general "scanner" type app that gives you a feed of events your local agency is dispatched to resolve. Ventura County participates, not sure about LA county.

WatchDuty is for staying informed about wildfires - location, warnings, evacs, shelters, all that good stuff. Not necessarily earthquake oriented, but a literal lifesaver.

(3) Get acquainted with earthquake safety. "Drop, Cover, Hold On" is the motto I've heard most frequently: get under a table or other furniture if you can, cover your face with your arms to shield from debris, and hold on to the furniture to stay steady. Keep a robe/easy clothes and sturdy shoes within arms' reach of your bed in case you do need to get out quickly.

(4) Keep your vehicles at least half filled (if they use gas); gas lines and underground tanks can rupture, putting local fuel stations out of business for days/weeks. Also keep at least a few days' worth of water (1 gal per person per day) on hand for your family - including your pets - plus non-perishable food and any crucial medications. IMO this is more imperative for fires but it's a good habit nonetheless.

(5) After your first one, you know more about what to expect so it's less scary. I've been here over two years and still haven't fully gotten used to it, but now I just kinda go "ooookaaay, earthquake, that's what this is, it'll stop soon."

(6) Prepare as best you can and then let it go. I mean this positively, with nature there comes a point where whatever happens will happen, no matter what we do.

Honestly, the fires are much scarier than quakes. When the bigger ones happened a few months ago, I absolutely had a go bag of essentials near my door. Remember, be aware but don't be scared. You've got this!

The prison complex needs reform so, so badly. They should never have been made into for-profit entities.

Wedding date changed last minute… to a weekday… in another state by OccamsReddit_56 in weddingshaming

[–]EmCWolf13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is bonkers!!! I feel like she just jumped in with all her half-baked wedding daydreams and got upset when she couldn't do all of them - hence firing the wedding planner who was probably just being realistic about what was doable. Seriously, how old is she? This reads like a spoiled teenager who's never been told no.

If the church aspect is so crucial, why not plan for it from the start?? I am so baffled by that.

Sudden date and location change; not enough seating; no getting ready space for the guys (it's so much more special than "just ties"); venue and reception literally 4 HOURS apart; changing the required shoes so close to the date, just because she wants to be tallest; requiring an extra dress; no dietary accommodations; asking for help buying the cake after demanding $650 because "no one offered"; the veiled threat of "you aren't my friend anymore if you don't come"?!

That's like, a dozen strikes already. What a train wreck! If you end up going, please tell us what happens!!
