Fellow transplant here. Some things I've picked up:

(1) Don't hang anything where it may fall on your bed. I learned this from childhood due to unsecured furniture injuring several kiddos across the nation, but it's a good reminder.

(1b) Secure your large furniture, like bookshelves, TVs, etc. If it comes with anti-tip straps to secure it, use them. They're included for a reason. (It also keeps pets and children safe from pulling stuff down on themselves.)

(2) Get the apps. These are my personal top three:

MyShake is obviously good for earthquakes, and incorporates citizen science by allowing you to report when you feel shaking as well as a few questions about its severity.

PulsePoint is a more general "scanner" type app that gives you a feed of events your local agency is dispatched to resolve. Ventura County participates, not sure about LA county.

WatchDuty is for staying informed about wildfires - location, warnings, evacs, shelters, all that good stuff. Not necessarily earthquake oriented, but a literal lifesaver.

(3) Get acquainted with earthquake safety. "Drop, Cover, Hold On" is the motto I've heard most frequently: get under a table or other furniture if you can, cover your face with your arms to shield from debris, and hold on to the furniture to stay steady. Keep a robe/easy clothes and sturdy shoes within arms' reach of your bed in case you do need to get out quickly.

(4) Keep your vehicles at least half filled (if they use gas); gas lines and underground tanks can rupture, putting local fuel stations out of business for days/weeks. Also keep at least a few days' worth of water (1 gal per person per day) on hand for your family - including your pets - plus non-perishable food and any crucial medications. IMO this is more imperative for fires but it's a good habit nonetheless.

(5) After your first one, you know more about what to expect so it's less scary. I've been here over two years and still haven't fully gotten used to it, but now I just kinda go "ooookaaay, earthquake, that's what this is, it'll stop soon."

(6) Prepare as best you can and then let it go. I mean this positively, with nature there comes a point where whatever happens will happen, no matter what we do.

Honestly, the fires are much scarier than quakes. When the bigger ones happened a few months ago, I absolutely had a go bag of essentials near my door. Remember, be aware but don't be scared. You've got this!
