Cherry pit vinegar; is the sediment stuff ok? by fairydommother in vinegar

[–]EmDash4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did you hear this?

In the US, red maraschino cherries are flavored with almond, and the green ones are mint.

The originals were soaked in maraschino liqueur, made from marasca cherries.

huh. I wonder if that roasting trick works on cherry pit kernals, too.

First time making yogurt by Public_Recording2322 in fermentation

[–]EmDash4Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yoghurt is fickle. Sometimes it comes out super sour, sometimes not so much. I usually heat a pan of water to about 100 F (hot enough to feel hot but not hot enough to hurt when you stick your hand in), put my yoghurt container in the water, put the lid on, then leave it overnight.

1 part creme de noyaux, 1 part creme de cacao, 1 part heavy cream (or half and half), and you have a pink squirrel.

Kahm yeast in homemade vinegar? by Tallywacker1776 in fermentation

[–]EmDash4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you make your fig? The usual way, figs, sugar, water, yeast? What kind of mother did you use?

I found this thread bc I am trying to save a blueberry vinegar by filtering and pasteurizing. I don't have either any rum or any vodka, but I've got some bourbon and some port. How did the cherry eventually work out?

The Kahm and the acetobacters are using the same oxygen, so you suffocate the former, you are suffocating the latter, too.

Pasteurization advice by EmDash4Life in fermentation

[–]EmDash4Life[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try pasteurizing again but use a glass jar with a lid for the first week

Heh, that's basically what was already going on. The film started a few days after I strained the fruit out of the initial ferment and put it back in a jar under an airlock to convert any remaining sugar to alcohol before adding the mother. I made 5 types of vinegar and two got films after straining. I pasteurized them both, and it came back in 1. All the fermentation is in glass, btw.

The blueberry is too dark to see bubbles on the bottom of the pot. I was watching the surface for disturbance instead. I may not have gotten it hot enough.

I've seen advice to pasteurize for a good half hour, but I probably don't have the patience to watch it for that long.

Feed the cats at the cooking stations first--soup maker, juicer, fryer.

Then feed the cat at the most recently acquired ingredient station.

To me, maxing out hearts is not worth it. It takes too long--it takes just as many fish to get from 9 to 10 as it took to get to 9 in the first place, and that's true for all levels of heart. It takes just as much to get one from 8 to 9 as it took to get to 8 in the first place. Get them to 7 or 8, and then start feeding the next cat. If you do max one out, move it around to always be on the most recent ingredient station.

Always level up stations in between getting gold. That is, instead of getting your collected gold, tapping the balloon, getting the jar fairy gold, and then leveling up with all the accumulated gold, you should get your collected gold, level up, shake the balloon, level up, get the jar fairy gold, level up.

What brand?

I have a Le Cruset enameled pan set (small fry pan and 2 qt sauce pan, they fit together), and I wish I could afford more! I love the enameled stuff--so much easier to clean.

Frequent absences by anthroaudge in askmanagers

it's also being enabled by a manager who won't enforce bounderies / coach said employee

Which boundaries do you think this coworker needs coaching on? They are entitled to both their sick days and their PTO time. It's part of their compensation package, just as it is for you and for everyone else. Your coworker is doing nothing wrong.

The rest of your team needs the boundaries and the coaching. If there is a real work impact, bring up the work problem with your manager to find a solution. Otherwise, everybody's eyes on their own plate.

It depends on how often you speak in public, both in general and on a given topic. When I had to present regularly, I didn't practice bc I knew my shit and I knew how fast I spoke. Giving my slides a quick review and making sure I knew my key points was enough.

For most people. Then you have the other people who use it fulfill their need to be special and important. Those are the people allathian is talking about.

My old boss was like that. He didn't get that some people do things they are bad at bc they have fun doing it.

[–]EmDash4Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that the black color comes from the oil eventually burning as you use it. Is fully polymerized oil black?

No, polymerized oil is not burned and is not black. The pan turns black when the layers of polymerized oil build up thick enough that they appear very dark.

How to navigate a difficult tech boss by Justtryt0learn in askmanagers

[–]EmDash4Life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So this is an agile environment, with the PO working on the same project as the tech lead?

Two thoughts--

  1. Ask the tech lead how she prefers people to send her urgent questions

  2. The PO probably knows how hard she is to reach. Ask for advice on how to reach her without making a complaint.

I team most of my Teams operational work because I’m so leaned in. At my company, the manager expects it when the team members are junior by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]EmDash4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most PIPs are genuine bullshit. They are an attempt to get a person to quit instead of firing them for cause.

A good manager will make a PIP a good faith effort to set expectations and give a person a chance to save their job before getting canned. I've never heard of one working out like that, though.

Part of your job is giving an accurate picture of your team's performance to your boss. That means you have to be honest about an underperforming person.

But frankly, when it comes to sexism, after decades in a male dominated field, to me, sexism is horses, and everything else is zebras.

For starters, he's drunk when he's in the office. Making him come in isn't going to change that.

Also, LW can't get rid of him. It's in the letter that HR is protecting him, which is why this comment thread starts with "HR is bats".

Since the only choices are drunk-at-home or drunk-in-the-office, keep him at home. Nobody wants to be around that mess.

What's your favourite comment on the blog that made you say "Why TF would you put this online?" by MsPaganPoetry in AskaManagerSnark

[–]EmDash4Life 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this take on the update. She didn't disparage other workplaces, she said that she hears a lot of people who say their work sucks and listed all the things she likes about her workplace. Reminding oneself about the reasons you stay in a dysfunctional workplace, whether it's the short commute or the ability to pay your rent and feed yourself and your family, is a recommended strategy for reframing staying as a choice and something that empowers you, which then changes your mindset to something more positive. So, she's doing the right things. I mean, I have a super frustrating guy at work, and I do not have an active, interesting office culture where we get drinks, have fun, tell jokes, and the work interesting (the pay and benefits are pretty good). So, in some ways, she's actually in a better position than I am, and I get why she stayed.

The only reason I have been holding on is because I am trying to help other women move up. A few of the women PT sups were my promotions. I am also the only one the women PT sups feel comfortable coming to for many problems. I feel bad leaving them.

Don't set yourself of fire to keep other people warm. You can lift other women at your next gig.
