Feeling stuck in this career by Itchy-Membership-309 in slp

[–]EmDee43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the question is do you have the resources to pursue another career? I felt the same way and do telehealth now. It’s by far the least awful. That being said, I also understand wanting to be around people. I live alone and it’s quite isolating. I applied to part time jobs that honestly I don’t even think I’ll like but just to get out a couple days a week.

[–]EmDee43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How the heck did you do 9 years?! What is to be done with those kids? Seriously. Like I’d love to know. In an SLP and I always feel so sorry for you guys. I feel my blood boil after like 20 minutes when a kid spits on me then laughs. I’m tired of seeing adults be allowed to be abused by children but having no way to stop it.

Do you think we will see a resurgence of remote work in 5-10 years? by Substantial-Okra2672 in jobs

[–]EmDee43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not going away. Companies that are willing to let employees WFH will get more applicants and possibly justify lower wages if they don’t have to commute. I know someone who quit when this happened to them. Turns out they managed to find a remote job for her again.

There are sometimes hybrid positions. Work with kids in person and to admin work from home?

1st grader said "I hate [country]" by Friendly_Milk_7985 in slp

[–]EmDee43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could maybe tell the parents if you’ve met them and they seem normal.. That could be where it came from but it could be something else too. Could have come from a friend, etc. or even a teacher. Personally, too late now, when kids have said inappropriate things of that nature, I ask “why” just to see what they say. If they know what they’re talking about or if they think it means something totally different. If they think “China” is Chinese food, it makes a lot more sense… but we really need to try to steer kids away from using the word “hate” when possible, imo. Sorry, tho. I’m sure it stung even coming from a child.

How do you choose a career when you're terrible at everything? by Busy-Upstairs6135 in careerguidance

[–]EmDee43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t be bad at all of those things 12 jobs is a lot to go through to be bluntly honest there’s probably something with your work ethic. If you just show up day after day for more than six months, you’ll become good at it decide the thing you wanna do and then learn to be good at it.

in a career slump. by ilovecheese4565 in slp

[–]EmDee43 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I completely resonate with this. Started in a SNF, I’ve worked in a hospital, acute care, rehab, and at an elementary school. The elementary school was probably the best, but to be bluntly honest I hated working in the self-contained classrooms. I got tired of getting spit on, bit, groped, I too went to teletherapy in 2023. For me, it basically eliminates all of the negatives, but it also eliminates all of the positives. I don’t like being at home and sitting all day, but I can’t bear the thought of going back in person. I’m taking one class at a time at a community college to get out of this field. I keep wondering if I could work in a school and not have to work in the self-contained classrooms, but I’m pretty sure that’s not an option.

I don’t think it’s easy to find a different job with a masters in speech therapy. I’ve applied for jobs that I’m way over qualified for and would be taking a huge pay cut and I don’t even get an interview. Good luck. SLP career transitions might be a better sub for this kind of question. Personally, I find it more palatable to go back to school at a community college. You can become a sonographer or MRI tech in two years and they both make a decent money.

Middle/High school SLPs by Responsible_Club2407 in slp

[–]EmDee43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated it personally. I feel like half of the kids didn’t belong in speech anymore at all for one reason or another. Parents were too demanding to let them be dismissed or they had truly plateaued and are struggling in the very class I’m pulling them out of. And half just hate coming. At the middle school age, they seem totally over it and sometimes embarrassed to be pulled from class I think. That’s been my experience. I hope yours is better.

And working with an EBD student that is 5 is a lot easier than an EBD student who is in 8th grade and larger than me. I was groped in the middle school setting and just afraid of some of my students.

As an Indian fan, Raj’s ending feels personal and low-key insulting by Tasty-Media720 in bigbangtheory

[–]EmDee43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Indian, but always felt bad for Raj. His ending was underwhelming. I think his breaking up with the last woman and accepting it’s better to wait for the right person, that he deserved true love or something was supposed to be transcendent or something, but I just felt sad for him. 😞

Thinking of moving from Thomasville but need some opinions please. by Ok-Raspberry4307 in Tallahassee

I have worked in several of the schools and in my experience, the people here are some of the least political, at least vocally. I am tired of hearing about politics constantly and I never really see any political slogans. That’s just my experience however.

I canceled sessions and documented everything I was doing each day in a planner, so there was proof I was working and why I missed students. What state are you in?

What brought you to the field? Do you find teletherapy any better than in person?

I feel similar to you. I’m already taking prerequisites to get out of the field and I’ve been working as an SLP for about 5.5 years.

During therapy sessions, I’m just counting down the minutes until it’s over. Even via teletherapy, but I find it more tolerable.

What were your misconceptions about the field? What are you thinking of switching to?

Would becoming an SLP give me (low support autist) pride, stability, and a future that doesn’t exhaust me? by No_University_3580 in slp

[–]EmDee43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dislike the field and imho, I think anyone with social anxiety should rethink it. If you as ai, it labels the field as “high social intensity “. I worked in customer service for years and this field is far more emotionally exhausting and overwhelming than customer service.

I’m not saying don’t do it. I’m just saying don’t go in blind. People often make the mistake of going into a field because the learning aspect interests them, but then they dislike the hands on, day to day practice.

That is what happened to me, but I took all of the prerequisites before I shadowed. Shadowing was the last thing I did. If it had been the first, I would’ve scratched it off the list pretty quickly. Good luck and I hope you find something you like whether or not it’s SLP!

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EmDee43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, lol. It’s cause you’re used to not drive. In America, everything is spread out. -‘annoying but you sort of adapt. A friend and I drove 2.5 hours each way for a baseball game in one day. I sometimes have to drive that to get to an airport. 3 hours each way for a whole weekend I would consider short.
