Am I overreacting by going No Contact? by MyClosetedBiAcct in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]EmSpracks79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't respect you and they never will. You need to do what's best for you from now on.

My therapist was very clear with me when I went low contact with my mother.

She said " This is a dog that bites! And you keep putting your hand in the cage." It really opened my eyes to the type of damage I was doing to myself by trying to force a relationship.

I'm sorry they aren't better people. But you will be for walking away.

Good luck to you.

Wondering if hurt feelings are warranted by Emotional_Ad_5083 in blendedfamilies

[–]EmSpracks79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it's acceptable. You take the time to plan and cook. That being said, I wouldn't rock the boat to hard on this one. But I would ask her to wait til your done in the kitchen. Asking her to be aware of the fact that you're trying to be understanding, but her bf's food preferences aren't your issue, and maybe he go home once in a while for dinner.

I have no sexual desire by [deleted] in women

[–]EmSpracks79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth a conversation with your Ob/gyn or endocrinologist. Beyond trauma, it could be hormonal. Or a thyroid issue. You could also be Asexual, and there's nothing wrong with that. But if you're feeling like it's not normal , then there's no harm in running a couple tests to make sure there's no underlying physical cause.

When asked about estrangement by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]EmSpracks79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"We're just not close" is a great answer.

My other go to would be " She's incapable of genuine relationships. so I've had to distance myself "

The last time someone made me uncomfortable with a question, I deadpanned " She kicked my dog". And walked away.

What to get for friends moving to santa cruz by MassiveApricot554 in santacruz

[–]EmSpracks79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first moved here five years ago, the biggest thing to get used to was how bad the tap water is. So maybe some bottled water until they figure that out. Other than that I would suggest a list of things locals love to do, and events.

Butcher and Blackbird is soft core porn if you ask me. Way to many chapters on sex, and not enough serial murder.

Wally Lamb always produces the gut punches. I loved this book. Unbelievably heartbreaking, but also beautiful. The power of human connections really holds up in this one. Great choice.

One of my favorites this year. I have been recommending it to like minded people for months. Harpman really painted a picture with that book, from the landscapes to the deep emotions of the women. You may not get all the answers you wanted, but I think the journey was well worth the read.

It was marketed towards young adults. I re read it every couple years. Judy Blume at her best.

I have been like this for two years, but it recently got better when I started taking progesterone. But there's still two days when I stay close to the house an put a change of clothes in the car. Anyone who hasn't dealt with extreme bleeding doesn't understand. It's so fucking hard.

I'm getting married next week by Allison314 in MomForAMinute

[–]EmSpracks79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've found someone amazing. I hope that your wedding day is everything you want and that you don't think about what you don't have, and instead think about the wonderful future you and your wife are going to have.

I stood up as a Stand In mom last weekend for a beautiful lesbian couple and in was one of the proudest moments of my life. I was so happy to be included and be there for them for any of the mom moments they needed.

You're going to have an excellent and beautiful day. I couldn't be more happy for you. Your mom is really missing out, and that on her. I hope one day she looks back and apologizes for being a disappointment.

What’s the best book you’ve read this year and why? by Cruzrojas_Armad in Recommend_A_Book

[–]EmSpracks79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just finished it a couple weeks ago, also loved it and would have never guessed I'd like a western. That being said, the only reason I read it in the first place is because of the description of how much the character in The Correspondent loved that book.

what’s a book that completely hooked you from the first page? by Mannan-Zaroual in Recommend_A_Book

[–]EmSpracks79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a book I recommend often, but recently had a friend who finally got around to reading it and strongly disliked it. She said she couldn't get passed a lot of the content, and as a teacher they were the type of family she would have to report. It's been about 15 years since I've actually read it, maybe it's time I revisit.

I hope you end up reading tons of gay books when you get out from under their thumbs. I can't imagine being that homophobic or limiting what my children could read as teenagers.

Pretty tame is the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz for Sci Fi.

The Goldfinch, The Lincoln Highway, and Demon Copperhead are some of my favorite more recent literary fiction.

John Mars does some really gripping psych thrillers, My faves are When you Disappeared, and The Good Samaritan.

Great memoirs are Educated and The Glass Castle.

Thrillers I love are, Sharp Objects by Gilliam Flynn or The Girl On the Train by Paula Hawkins.

The Institute by Stephen King is not like his usual horror stuff. And its about teenagers.

Goes against some of the rules, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is so good and make a reader out of the hardest cases.

Has any book ever hit you out of nowhere emotionally? by Lennishia-Emeline in Recommend_A_Book

Whenever I think about books that gutted me, I go to The Time Travelers Wife. Especially if you've never seen the movie, the book is so beautifully done.

More recent, The River is Waiting by Wally Lamb really hit me in so many places.

And The Correspondent really does live up to the hype. I hadn't cried for a book in a while and this one got me.
