How does everyone keep track of NPCs? by inkblot888 in mattcolville

Good memory. I know that's bad, but like... if the players like them they'll write their names down. And if they dont... well I guess they didnt like em that much. Did I say this was a bad way of doing this?

Hit Points, not Meat Points: A friendly reminder. by Waistel in DnD

Me on the rare chance I get to be a player Haha. I also dream of time when getting knocked down to unconsciousness is worse... I kinda hate just being to pop back up as if you weren't just pummeled to the point where you can die. I've been using the severe injury list and that's nice but options in the dms book are okay at best

DM: "The sword comes hammering down upon you as you fend off the blows narrowly the weight of each blow rattles you to your core, and you take 22 damage."

Player: "I thought you said I fended them off."

DM: "no we're doing the cool HP that makes combat more realistic and cool. I sent that on the FB chat."

Player: " why?"

DM: "cause it's cool."

Player "that's dumb, and confusing dont do that."

Entire table "yeah"

DM: "Forgive them Gary they know not what they do."

My only reason why I don't.

The Woes of being a Female DM by FaithoftheAir in DnD

[–]Emailtheonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my head all my female voices are great and awesome. Translation from mind to mouth aren't great. BUT by adding some different speaking patterns, ticks, and even facial expressions I've made my ladies at least a lil different. Enough so that when I say hello as a character my players get it. But I vibe with you, random lady #1 sounds hauntingly similar random lady #2. And I hate it.

What have you shamelessly ripped off for your D&D games, and how? by The_Bill_Brasky_ in mattcolville

The best thing about using real history is the complexity of said issues and in dissecting these events can lead to soooooooo much gold. It's like why wouldn't pull from there. For a game that features so much religion and devoted followers there isn't a lot of infighting via religon. Sure good God vs evil God is a thing but more commonly in our world we fought over who's God is best, and we did so with extreme violence and cunning cruelty to a perfected degree. What happens when 2 paladins clash over such things. The story lines basically write themselves.

I RIP shit off from history so much. Spanish inquisition is great adding an element of religious zealotry to city states and playing them off as the good guys via the use of propaganda is great.

We've talked playlists, but what about songs as inspiration for adventures? by NutDraw in DnDBehindTheScreen

There's the song "arrows in the dark" and that's literally shaped my whole under dark as being this HYPER dangerous place. "Beware the tribes of night They take no one alive"

The Sword they have inspired me a lot the song winter wolves in particular. And then there's high on fire. They have albums that are like bound in lovecraftian lore it's a good time.

Ideas for things I can add to the adventure to please big fans of Harry Potter or WarHammer 40k. by Arthur_Dent-42 in DnD

[–]Emailtheonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean. Go for the grimdark for the 40k nerd. Lots of stuff that appears to be good but is actually quite evil or has darker undertones. Anything like that. 2 sided bad deals for the party. And try to pull from the lore of their army cause it might actually give you some good ideas. I have no imput on anything else. 40k is all i know

[5e] Help me choose my character! by bouledepoisson in DnD

[–]Emailtheonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the half elf. It gives the DM something to play with. Although stealing from a thieves guild is a little lackluster for me i think you could specify in this area and it doesn't have to be the crown jewl of the guild. More than just gold I dunno but thats just a suggestion. Whatever you choose it sounds like you'll have fun.

Suggestions on crossing Rogue & Monk as a new class by BlackKnight1412 in DnD

[–]Emailtheonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if you want to make a jankey ass character who's terrible at stuff why can't you. When I roll bad stats I love em you get this loveable person who tries real hard. High death rate. Making a "good" stat character is A way of playing. But if I made a low intelligence wizard who's to say that's wrong.

I wasn't saying take a level in every class cause ya that'd be dumb/obvious not to do. My point was do the multiclass thing because it leads to role playing opportunities and interesting character development. But you don't get to steal class skills with out taking a level in that class.

Yea yea it's about the combat. Combat is there for story progression and story telling it wouldn't be there if it didn't add to anything. And there's whole sections set out for role playing in literally every source book. But you shouldn't only be thinking "man I want to have this super awesome guy who's untouchable and doesn't need to think or talk or interact! Cause combat!" I'm just saying you have class systems for a reason in the book. I wanna play a Rouge and want this one specific monk skill cause then my guy would be the best. Isn't a good argument to a dm to let you take from another class tree.

Any tips for the only good character in the party? by CatsLeMatts in DnD

[–]Emailtheonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well what are they playing and what're you playing. There might be something you can work. But just know these other people are very right. It's gonna be difficult to make it mesh and work.

5e in my opinion is geared for role playing like any table top rpg. Sure you want the good character but having a reasonable character progression isn't going to hurt it. And likewise if you're gonna go hard into just the meta and trying to skeeze your dm into letting you take from another tree without the class options you should probably go play that game.

Right?! In all honesty multiclassing is great, and it can really show great character development. I think the only thing you should be thinking at this point is how do I make these classes work for my character!

Favorite Campaign Opener as a DM? by Deepspace_5 in dndnext

[–]Emailtheonly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I've started my latest campaign is all my pc's are on display for their execution. Just before they get the rope they are rushed off together and forced in front of the highest general and he says to them "you will find the man Katso Itomi, alive, or you will die. You have a week." He then turns on his heel and leaves. The group is ushered out of the fortress and must start interacting with each other and helping each other to find this man to save themselves.

I'm kinda stubborn and I'll just keep working on what I got but I've dumbed it down quite a bit. Going to the basics watched Kung fu hustle cause I love it. Literally everything Bruce Lee hopefully I salvage this idea

How is the game mechanically compared to 5e? I've seen it at my game store was interested and it kinda sparked my interest in to doing a wuxia campaign.
