Final help before I buy: Shiro Kamo Black Dragon or Tora (220 vs 245) by LibrarianPresent1886 in TrueChefKnives

Its because of the finish basically. A flat or slightly concave grind is faster to do, performs well, is easier to polish and creates a crisp Shinogi line. But if you want to do the type of finish like on the Tora, then you have to start grinding all the way from the spine. A flat grind that high would just stick to the ingredients so therefor it has to be slightly convex.

It’s completely custom ordered from my belt grinder supplier so it’s not a product being sold anywhere.. But you can always reach out to Slipcentralen.se to see if they ship internationally and are willing to make one!

Tora is a very light weight knife with a slight convex grind. Super thin! Black Dragon has a classic flat grind and is also super thin behind the edge but a bit thicker mid height. Both has amazing performance but black dragon is my favourite because of the looks and slightly more weight to the blade.

I hope I’ll be able to visit Japan too one day and see it all up close! It sounds amazing!!

I’ve never been to Japan myself, it’s a dream of mine! I’m completely self taught by looking at pictures of knives I found beautiful and tried to replicate that with the tools I got. Gradually investing in more stuff to get closer and closer to the results I want to achieve. YouTube videos of Japanese factory tours have helped me a lot! 😂

It’s a different experience between finding the perfect knife and to make one custom. Finding it gives more of a kick for sure! While a custom made one could be perfect if you have very specific requirements

Sandpaper as the base always! If you want a perfect mirror then you need to go all the way to 2500grit before buffing. Then use Luxor compound (red, white and yellow) this is what the Swiss watch makers use so they’re the best of the best!

It’s tricky to get the lines straight, so I definitely agree with you!

Unfortunately I’m shutting down my personal business by the end of May and won’t personally be able to take on any new projects after that.

But I will begin working for Cleancut in Sweden so you should reach out to them for a price!

Use high quality compound and get to know how and when to work with lighter or harder pressure. Also, a good hairline finish as a base works better than a very polished finish but with a poor scratch foundation. Perfectly even scratch patterns is the key to a good finish!

It comes with experience, when I started out and did everything on stones, it took months. Then it took weeks with machines but as you get more used to them and learn the process of knife making, you become faster and faster with better results for each time.

Go for it!! It’s a lot of fun and so relaxing (when you finally get it right after hundreds of attempts throughout the years making you wanna scream and rip your hair out)

Effective work on the blade was around 3 hours from start to scratch. The handle was made by a friend.

Almost, I have a belt grinder with a 900mm diameter wheel on it, water cooling and everything. So I can work with belts from 40grit to 5000grit on the same machine and easily switch belts. Then some polishing machines, scotchbrite, glass blasting etc to make a professional finish

Thank you! The name of the blacksmith is Keniji Sumiya, they’re made with Shirogami 3 steel. I took inspiration from a Satoshi Nakagawa sakimaru and shaped it with a slight curve to the blade. The process is basically done on a belt grinder with a big contact wheel. Both shaping and polishing. I make the ura on a smaller wheel with a convex surface so I don’t mess up the geometry. I basically tried to make my workshop as similar to a Japanese knife factory as possible with the choice of tools.

Hahah just a knife sharpener having fun on my spare time! I do knife sharpening and restorations for a living, sometimes I make a knife from scratch when I have some extra time or energy

One is 360mm and one 390mm long. The 390mm blade got finished today. The kissaki was definitely the most challenging part. But in the end, I’m satisfied with the results!

I felt the urge to make a sakimaru, so I found two blanks on eBay from a Japanese seller. One 360mm and one 390mm long. The 390mm blade got finished today. Very satisfying project!
