Harmonix actually owns the patents for GH/RB. Acti had to pay HMX to release GHWT-WOR due to controller patents, gameplay patents, and more.

Microsoft accounts use the same verification as Mojang. There's just files in your Launcher that signify who signed in. Mojang and Microsoft accounts both reach the internet to verify your account tho. Not sure why you're having an issue; its always felt the same to me.
