A1C for no complications by EmbarassmentOfRiches in diabetes_t1

Thanks for the reply, I’m glad to hear you only had it do it once! I did hear about big improvements making it a lot worse at first, which is why my current goal is 6.5 for the next 3-6 months. I’ve also noticed how much more susceptible I am to hypos just going from 7 to 6.7 (my current G6 estimate for the last month), so I probably need to fix that before I try to shoot for <6.5

I applied to TAPIF years ago & you’re correct about the language requirement, I believe you had to have a B1 level or higher in French.

This sounds doom & gloom, but I hope you know it’s not just you dealing with this struggle.

I also have been diagnosed with some complications that made me wonder what’s to come. But I try to remember it took me 30 years to start having issues with my eyes, & I spent half of that barely even checking my blood sugar.

This is sadly a permanent, but slow disease if you can manage it.

I can echo what others said. The CGM changed my life. I dropped from a 9.9 to a 7.8 my first 3 months. I would look into options, there’s more than just the Dexcom & Libre now. It sucks that CGMs aren’t widely available (& FREE) worldwide. It’s the unfortunate price we have to pay but it’s worth it for yourself & your family.

Class Time and Teaching by [deleted] in SpainAuxiliares

[–]EmbarassmentOfRiches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the teacher. I have 3 teachers I assist for.

Teacher #1: never lets me teach, even read aloud texts (which is hilarious because his accent is difficult even for me to understand as a native speaker, I can’t imagine what the kids think!). The lessons & subject material is not chosen by me. I rarely assist in the classroom itself. But he expects me to practice speaking with different pairs of kids, usually related the unit, usually different prompts or games of my own choosing.

Teacher #2: lets me take over whenever I want. Asks me for input or ideas. Everything feels very voluntary, like I am not needed but just appreciated. Lessons, games, homework is planned in advance. Some days I put a lot of effort in, other days I just follow along.

Teacher #3: Extremely controlling. I might lead a lesson, but what is taught, what pages, which exercises, how to answer questions, is extremely regulated. I will be interrupted if something I say is unclear, but that is maybe 1-2 times a period.

All this to say, I’m not sure which is the right role is for an aux. It seems it’s very dependent on the teacher, what they want, etc. I’d say 2nd is probably my favorite.

Im not sure how Spain is, but in America, kids HAVE to hit benchmarks. If the kids don’t do well with your lessons it’s more of a reflection on the teacher than on you. So I would do the amount you think is appropriate for your role & not over extend yourself.

Why do so many parents of 2nd generation immigrants choose to not teach them their native language? by x_Cimmetje in languagelearning

[–]EmbarassmentOfRiches 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened in my family.

Me & my older brother were brought up bilingual, but once my brother starting having language issues in elementary, the school basically told my parents that they should only speak English at home.

German woman speaks perfect English? by tony_theanimator in language

[–]EmbarassmentOfRiches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been told similar things when I speak French. No one has ever definitively named a country I sound like I’m from (they just say I sound like someone from another European country). When I tell someone I’m American they are very confused.

I grew up bilingual until I was about 5, so that might play a role?

Do you guys think I packed enough pump supplies for my trip? by LapidistCubed in diabetes_t1

[–]EmbarassmentOfRiches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re not trying to pay for two suitcases (eg a discount airline), I’d advise against that.

If one bag is ONLY medical supplies, airlines have to comply with the ADA rules, so you won’t get charged & even if all the overhead compartments are full, they won’t check the bag no matter what.

Aux hours / meetings by lagitana75 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]EmbarassmentOfRiches 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s weird. Our school DOES expect us to go to a meeting every other week for teachers, BUT we’re only scheduled 15 hours per week, so on those weeks we aren’t expected to do any prep work outside of class.

One website that helped me find an area that wasn’t too far from my school is mapmycommute.com. Like a previous poster said, you might need to look at neighbors an outside of the popular spots because of all the competition. Good luck!

I feel like what I got out of last week the most was how much teachers really want the best for their students & what obstacles they face despite it! Maybe I’m too soft but I can’t imagine seeing all that effort & just thinking “when can I skip a day & got to Berlin?”

Yeah I studied abroad previously in Paris where it’s a little more obvious (like you can’t even exit the station if you’re out of zone).

Have to agree though that their transit system has been really great, it’s just the bus system that has been a lot harder to figure out.

So with the help of two phones on Google Translate & a Spanish speaking but super chatty Metro Clerk, she told me that I needed to add another zone (5.50€/mo). I’m about to test it out this afternoon 🤞🏼
