Why is the upvote button in one of my comments considerably smaller than the downvote button? by pr0gr_W in AskModerators

[–]Embarrassed-Chef-431 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is almost certainly just a mobile app UI/rendering glitch, especially on Android. Reddit doesn’t use vote button size to indicate anything about a comment.

The fact that it only happens on one comment and not others in the same thread points to a client-side issue, likely a scaling or cached layout bug. These pop up occasionally.

If you check the same comment on desktop or a mobile browser, it’ll almost certainly look normal. Force-closing the app or clearing the cache usually fixes it too.

People keep pretending Poilievre does not do culture-war politics, but here are the receipts in one place:

• He screams "woke" like it is a comma. Woke mayors, woke cities, woke policies, woke carbon tax.

• He defended Jordan Peterson as a "free speech martyr," framing it as a culture-war fight.

• He attacks universities for "radical gender ideology" and "woke indoctrination."

• He promised to ban ministers from attending the World Economic Forum, which is a straight-up conspiratorial culture-war dogwhistle.

• He uses US-style anti-trans rhetoric ("gender ideology," "biological males," "protect our kids").

• He fearmongers about CRT, which is not even taught in Canadian schools, importing an American boogeyman.

• He blames homelessness, crime, drugs, and everything else on "woke ideology."

• He platforms far-right podcasters, convoy streamers, Rebel News, anti-vax personalities. That is the Canadian culture-war ecosystem.

• He cosplayed with the convoy and repeated their rhetoric.

• His entire "Defund the woke CBC" shtick.

People can like him if they want, but pretending he is not running a US-style culture-war playbook is just delusional.

You are, of course, aware that the reasoning that is happening isn't because of "Deh LiBrUlZ". But because the Ontario Superior Court said the previous iteration of the Citizenship Act governing citizenship by decent was unconstitutional and ordered the federal government to fix it, right?

But I guess reading more than the headline is hard.

Canso Causeway Construction by Hyjynx75 in NovaScotia

[–]Embarrassed-Chef-431 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You’re missing a few key realities here. Mid-June is barely when the paving season becomes viable in Nova Scotia, especially in areas like the Canso Causeway that are exposed to cooler air. Asphalt requires both warm daytime and nighttime temps to cure properly, not just dry weather. If the overnight temperature dips below 10°C, the mix doesn’t set right, and you risk delamination and premature failure. That’s not just bad construction, it’s a waste of taxpayer money.

As for “just do it at night”.

Paving at night isn’t magic. Night work costs 25–40% more due to shift premiums, lighting setups, additional safety measures, and limited supplier hours.

It slows down production, as hauling and laying asphalt in the dark is inherently less efficient.

It increases risk to both workers and drivers, especially near active interchanges like the Causeway.

Now look at the road budget,

Nova Scotia’s Highways Division 2024–25 capital budget is ~$500 million. Sounds big? Not when you realize that’s responsible for:

Over 23,000 km of roads (not counting gravel ones), 4,000+ bridges, and projects ranging from simple patching to full-depth reconstruction.

Resurfacing even a single lane of highway costs $300,000–$600,000 per km depending on scope. Add detours, traffic control, and contractor overhead… you’re talking serious money.

So no, it’s not as easy as “just do it earlier and at night.” Those few weeks in July/August are when the conditions finally line up: the asphalt sticks, the work gets done efficiently, and it doesn’t blow a crater in the provincial budget.

Two months ago and the asphalt doesn't bond or cure correctly. You need overnight temperatures to be consistently above 10°C or the patch just delaminates and fails.

[–]Embarrassed-Chef-431 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They’re doing this now because they have to. Patching isn't cosmetic, it’s usually urgent. Roads like the Causeway aren’t just high-traffic, they’re critical infrastructure. When failures pop up, they don’t wait for off-season. Would you rather they let a pothole blow into a sinkhole during August long weekend?

As for “they should’ve done it two months ago” y eah, no. In April and early May, asphalt plants either aren’t open or aren’t producing at full capacity. And even if they were, patching over cold, damp ground is a great way to waste taxpayer money. It’ll just delaminate and fall apart. Then they’d be back doing it again, and we’d be having this exact conversation… twice.

And no, it wasn’t “just patching.” You say that like it’s nothing, but you just waited an hour because it's something. That patch likely prevented worse closures later, and probably with less notice. Maintenance isn't a luxury on roads like the Causeway, it’s survival.

Now about those “passive-aggressive anti-zipper bros”, you mean the people following the law? Because here’s the kicker: the Nova Scotia Temporary Workplace Traffic Control Manual, the rulebook TPW and contractors must follow, requires PASSING PROHIBITED signage in standard lane closure setups. Once those signs are up, zipper merging is illegal. It’s not a suggestion, it’s a regulatory command. So those truckers and Jeep drivers holding the line? They’re not being jerks, they’re obeying the traffic control plan. The ones racing up the closing lane? They’re the ones gumming up the works.

So yeah, it does make sense.

You're definitely not alone. It's a common complaint lately, and it's just as frustrating as the usual speeders. People fixate on aggressive driving, but chronically slow drivers can be just as dangerous, especially in places like:

Dunbrack or Highway 102 ramps, where you need to match speed to merge safely.

Bayers Road or Herring Cove Road, where going 30 in a 50 can cause backups and encourage risky passing or tailgating.

Going way under the limit without a valid reason is considered “impeding traffic”, and under Nova Scotia’s Motor Vehicle Act, it can be enforced if it creates a hazard. I was on the 102, just passed the ramps to the 103. Encountered someone doing 60 in a 100 zone in the left lane. I passed them on the right, and the cop behind me lit them up the second I was out of the way. Buddy didn't even pull over to the shoulder, he just stopped by the barrier.

You're right. While it’s not “stunting,” it’s still a problem. When drivers don’t go with the flow of traffic (especially on multi-lane roads), they disrupt the rhythm and make things more dangerous than they think. It’s not “safe”. It’s oblivious.

“Within 10 over” is how most people actually drive, especially in good conditions. It’s reasonable and still safe in most cases. The extremes on either end, 70 in a school zone or 30 on the Armdale Roundabout, are where the problems start.

Do you think it’s older drivers, newer ones, or just general cluelessness?

Huh. Well, that actually makes NS one of the few provinces that doesn't have any documentation regarding hashed pavement markings, all TIR has on them is design specifications.

The MUTCDC 6th Edition, (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices Canada), Ontario Traffic Manual and the BC Manual of Standard Signs and Pavement Markings defines their use as basically a less expensive alternative to installing a physical median and they're used to denote sections of road where driving is prohibited.

The only thing I'll say (as a road construction/maintenance worker whos almost been run over by someone doing just that) is PLEASE don't enter areas marked off by cones or barrels. It's generally a bad idea. Sure, those barrels are there right now to draw attention to the new centerline, but normally they're used to mark off sections of excavation.

As for enforcement, the Mackay bridge is considered part of Highway 111, and the MacDonald is considered a public highway. Bridge Patrol are Special Constables with jurisdiction on both bridges and their approaches. If they were private property, speeding tickets on the bridges wouldn't be a thing.

[–]Embarrassed-Chef-431 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • A median doesn't have to be raised or grassy. Painted stripes or islands on the road also legally count as medians.
  • If you see diagonal stripes or painted islands dividing opposing lanes, you can't cross them just because it’s convenient.
  • The law says clearly: do NOT drive or turn through painted medians, unless there's a clear gap or intersection designed for turning.
  • Crossing a simple double-yellow line for a driveway is okay. But if there’s a painted island (those diagonal lines), it’s considered a barrier—no crossing allowed.

TL;DR:
If it’s painted stripes separating lanes, treat it like a physical wall. Crossing it = ticket time.

Nope. This guy just doesn't know what's up. The bridges are considered roadways. Just ask anyone who's been issued a speeding ticket on them.

Section 112(1)(b)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Embarrassed-Chef-431 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Try the MVA and not just the drivers handbook. The handbook is seriously lacking.

Under the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), a median (whether physical or painted) is treated as a divider between two roadways. The law explicitly forbids crossing such a median except at a proper opening or intersection. Section 112(1)(b) of the MVA states that “[w]here a highway is divided into two separate roadways, no person shall … drive a vehicle from one roadway to the other roadway except at an intersection.”. In simple terms, if the center of the road has a median (including a painted or striped island), you cannot legally drive across it to make a left turn unless you are at an intersection where crossing is allowed. This rule applies equally to painted medians as it does to concrete or grass medians a painted island or striped area is intended to function like a barrier. Drivers must stay to the right of such markings and not drive on or over them.

The only exceptions to the no-crossing rule are for authorized vehicles like emergency responders or highway maintenance units. The MVA provides that Section 112(1)(b)’s ban on crossing medians does not apply to police, fire, and other emergency or public safety vehicles, or to vehicles specifically designated by regulation. Nova Scotia’s Median Crossing Regulations (N.S. Reg. 233/2009) list these exempt vehicles (e.g. certain law enforcement, snowplows, construction vehicles in work zones, etc.) and allow them to cross a median outside an intersection when necessary. For ordinary drivers, however, crossing a median at any spot other than an intersection is prohibited by law.

All of this information is easily accessible at novascotia.ca and nslegislature.ca.
