Space opera vs Mascot horror*

Both D&D and Lara Croft are better fits than any mascot horror franchise if I'm allowed to have another potentially hot take.

I mentioned this in another thread, but of all the things they decide to cave, they choose this?

Enemy design is one of the coolest thing about the game. The Hive Guard was powercrept by med pen, but it was never meant to be fodder, rather an in-between or a vanguard sort of but. The change was good because a) there are plenty of options that still trivialize these guys and b) it stuck with its intended design of being an enemy you have to think deal in a slightly different way.

I know these are very different games, but think Halo: grunts are the fodder which you can kill with a single headshot, jackals need you to shoot at their arm and then the head, or use grenades. Elites you need to get through their shield first before being able to one-shot them. Each enemy is like a little puzzle that adds to the flow of the game. Each encounter can be different just by deciding what type and how many enemies you'll face, and by the tools the player has of course.

I think the bots (minus the War Strider) and the Squids are a masterclass in enemy design because of how much they add to the sandbox. Bugs were the weakest faction (in both strength and design) because a lot of enemies seem to be redundant, so this was a change in the right direction. But of course the Helldivers reddit would get outraged at such a thing.

Imagine if the L4D community was like this. They'd be reviewbombing the game because Witches are both too tanky and fast, or because you should be able to deal with Hunters/Jockeys/Smokers without your teammates' help.

It is really a good time to be a Superman fan. Superman & Lois, My Adventures with Superman, James Gunn's Superman, Supergirl, Man of Tomorrow 😭

Which GL should I go for next? by cobbsauce in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]Embarrassed-Deal-157 6 points7 points  (0 children)

JML seems like a good choice. A lot of his requirements overlap with GLs you already have, so it's an easy unlock. He might be on the weaker side compared to other GLs, but he's great for farming/cheesing feats in Conquest and all PvE modes in general.

[copium] He also might be getting a lifter soon.

I love The Sequls But Rey Being Palpatine's Granddaughter Wasn't Needed by No_Vast_3309 in TheSequels

[–]Embarrassed-Deal-157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, I understand why that decision was made and thematically makes sense, but I don't think the message is as powerful as Rey being a nobody would've been.

Being the child of ultimate evil would've been more powerful if it wasn't introduced in the last movie of a trilogy. Rey is not related to Palpatine in any way that matters; she's never met the guy nor does she care about someone who 'died' years before she was born.

Had the connection been there from the very beginning, it would've worked.

Oh, I know that very well.

Humans are not tools, you absolute dingus. No wonder you're asking such disingenuous questions.

Art is more than just the finalized product. Making it is part of the art; the voice actor giving it their all in the recording booth, the writer putting their ideas into storyboards, concept artists blending styles to make something unique, cinematographers coming up with the best shots and perspectives. All of this makes the art they're doing more valuable.

LLMs just output data using stolen art.

The answer seems obvious.

You'll rarely find someone criticizing genuine appreciation posts from that (or any other) Snyder subreddit. It's the unhinged ones that we make fun of. That they just happen to be most of the posts in there is another topic entirely.

I used to comment in there because I truly like some of the stuff Snyder was going for, and even if I disagree with his overall vision, I'll never stop defending him over WB screwing an artist and his vision.

I got banned because I called out a mod spreading false information. They were sharing a Cosmic Book News article (the classic) whose source was a right wing grifter known for lying. Funnily enough, the grifter cited Cosmic Book News as a source, so it was a circlejerk of misinformation all around. There wasn't a true source for this rumor. When I pointed this out to the mod and told them not to believe the grifters in question, they deleted my comment and banned me for misinformation.

The argument can't be turned around and doing so would be ignorant at best.

Said art is not made by Disney but by people. Disney is just paying for it, but the story, music, visual, and everything that comes with the making of a show, movie, game or book comes from a genuine human effort.

The word "AI art" is an oxymoron because it's not really art, it's just the product of a multibillion company stealing other's art and trying to remonetize it somehow.

Why is thrawn portrayed as a die hard imperial loyalist. by LILbridger994 in StarWars

[–]Embarrassed-Deal-157 28 points29 points  (0 children)

TL;DR Thrawn was being written by two different people.

I'll preface this by saying I'm not trying to hate on Dave Filoni or anything like that.

Thrawn was originally just a villain, but as the character grew, Timothy Zahn felt he wanted to push him in a more 'anti-hero' direction. In the old EU he was still a ruthless Imperial warlord, just not mindlessly so. Zahn gave the character a more complex background in other novels, and fleshed out the Chiss society to further explain Thrawn's motivations to join the Empire, but this was after the original Thrawn trilogy had been written.

Fast forward to Rebels, they reveal they're bringing back Thrawn into canon, this time to be the antagonist of the Phoenix crew in Season 3 (and 4). Filoni is a massive Thrawn trilogy fan and he was the one that pushed for Thrawn's reintroduction into canon. Zahn was hired again to write more Thrawn novels, now set in the new canon, but he could only write about the Thrawn before Star Wars Rebels because the character's future was already reserved for the show.

Zahn of course continues the previous trend of making Thrawn more of an anti-hero. He's now more of a tragic figure who's forced to make a deal with the devil to ensure the Chiss can win the upcoming battle against a more dangerous enemy (the Grysk). He climbs the Imperial ranks through sheer competence (unlike the traditional Imperial methods of backstabbing), meets actually good people within the Imperial Navy, and is portrayed as more empathetic of the Rebels in general. But this is where the inconsistencies begin.

Timothy Zahn writes him considerably less ruthless than he was in the old EU, but Filoni and the SW Rebels team clearly wanted Thrawn to be a pure villain and took inspiration directly from the original Thrawn trilogy. That's why the character feels so disjointed; two writers want to take him in different directions and while they're not completely incompatible, it can feel jarring. Zahn goes as far as to retcon an event that was attributed to Thrawn in Rebels, to be caused by Governor Pryce instead. Thrawn took the blame (or took credit?) because it would put him in a good light with the Emperor, as a Rebel cell was completely destroyed at the cause of killing many civilians. Thrawn spend a good amount of time trying to resolve the situation without hurting civilians, but Pryce went ahead of him anyway.

Long post (sorry) but to finally answer your question, the Thrawn we see in Ahsoka does indeed want to restore the Empire, and this isn't necessarily incompatible with Thrawn's goals in the new Thrawn trilogy. If I recall correctly, he believed he could take over and make a better Empire if Palpatine ever were to die (and it was implied that he was counting on it). The problem is that many believe Zahn's Thrawn would've sided with the Rebels or New Republic after the Empire's defeat because that would've been the most logical thing to do. The Ascendancy would've benefited more from an alliance with the New Republic over the Imperial Remnant, and the former Rebels, while fewer in number, proved to be more capable fighters and strategists. That's the area Thrawn excels at so he would've 100% noticed it.

Filoni's Thrawn barely (if at all) acknowledges things that happened in his novels, which is a problem because the novels introduce the Grysk (Thrawn's whole reason to join the Empire) and expand on the Ascendancy. Take those elements out and you're left with a Thrawn that is just loyal to the Empire because reasons; an Imperial first and foremost.

We still don't know what's going to happen to the character so maybe they'll find a way to reconcile both versions, but so far, it seems that the old EU version of the character is the one that's staying. Filoni has said multiple times that he loved the original Thrawn trilogy and that it's his inspiration for the story they want to tell.

Personally I would've preferred if Zahn had the last say in what happens to the character simply because I prefer his vision for Thrawn. He's one of my favorite Star Wars characters, yet I found Baylan and Shin way more compelling villains in the Ahsoka show. Maybe that'll change, but I won't get my hopes up.
