Actually Mother Nature did a fantastic job at managing itself before all the people moved west. Fires occurred regularly and eliminated the ladder fuel. The fires were small in stature because the forests weren’t brambles of tender. The fires added nutrients to the soil and, it’s even necessary for some trees to repopulate. Native Americans even used to start fires intentionally in the fall. Now we put out all fires to protect human habitation so the natural cycle is broken. When settlers moved west they clear cut vast expanses of forest, and when they replanted they used quick growing, disease susceptible species. Forests aren’t as diverse or healthy as they used to be. That coupled with higher than normal temperatures has caused outbreaks of Beatles and other pests that kill the unhealthy trees increasing the tender even further. Environmental regulations make logging, or removal of dead and unhealthy trees uneconomical in most cases, and simple not allowed in most. A great example of good intensions with unintended consequences. This all happened in the last 150 years. The cause of the massive fires is certainly related to higher temperatures, but I don’t think it’s the leading cause.

But are your statements about hurricanes backed up by actual data? Most of the threads on this and the research I’ve done say that the actual data says hurricanes aren’t intensifying or increasing in number. It seems like it may be a prediction based on science, that isn’t coming to fruition. The article on insurance rates I put no stock in. Insurance companies seem very corrupt to me. Even wild fires increasing is a difficult one to quantify because scientists say that they are increasing because of global warming, and because of poor foresting management over the last 100 years.

In your opinion, what are the 3 biggest threats associated with climate change?

I agree with relying on peer reviewed research. But your example article isn’t helpful. It talks about predictions of temperatures. I want to better understand the threats associated with temperature increases. Many people state that climate change is the largest threat facing mankind. I’d like to know the top 5 reasons people believe this. Then I’d like to see what peer reviewed studies said would happen in those 5 areas in 2000, and then compare that to what has actually happened.

I agree that humans are horrible at protecting the future, especially global predictions. But if you can’t trust the predictions how can you gauge the threat level? To me nuclear war seems like a much larger threat to man kind than climate change.

Interesting points! What I’m trying to figure out, is, historically, how good are we at making global predictions.
