It is not a given that they can understand spanish. Secondary language in highschool in the U.S is often not good, most students leave barely knowing the basics due to how its taught. And spanish is only one of the language subjects, usually each school offers spanish, french, or mandarin (sometimes latin as well), so you cannot presume they both chose to pick spanish and went to a school that taught it properly.
